Dogs can eat small amounts of fully cooked, plain turkey meat if you remove the bones, skin, excess fat, and seasoning. Breast, boneless thigh or leg meat, plain ground turkey, cooked giblets, and meat fully separated from the neck bones can be suitable occasional treats. Avoid turkey bones, rich leftovers, and turkey containing onion or garlic.

Holiday turkey may contain bones, fatty skin, drippings, stuffing, brine, or gravy that can cause choking, illness, or poisoning. Turkey should be a treat or topper, not a replacement for complete and balanced dog food.

Safe turkey parts for dogs

Turkey itself is not inherently toxic to dogs. What matters is the part, preparation, and portion size. Keep treats, including turkey, to about 10% or less of your dog’s daily diet, with the rest coming from complete and balanced food.

Turkey part Can dogs eat it? Conditions
Breast meat Yes Fully cooked, plain, boneless, skinless, and trimmed of visible fat
Thigh or leg meat Yes Plain and boneless; remove skin and visible fat
Ground turkey Yes Thoroughly cooked, plain, and unseasoned; drain excess fat
Heart and gizzard Generally yes Fully cooked, plain, chopped into small pieces, and given in small amounts
Liver Generally yes, in small amounts Fully cooked and plain
Meat from the neck Yes, after preparation Remove the meat completely from every neck bone; never give the neck intact

Breast meat

Plain breast meat is a straightforward option. Remove the skin and any bone fragments, then cut the meat into bite-sized pieces.

Thigh and leg meat

Plain, boneless dark meat can also be offered. It is often fattier than breast meat, so remove the skin and visible fat.

Ground turkey

Plain ground turkey is suitable when thoroughly cooked. Choose turkey without added onion, garlic, salt, broth, or seasoning, and drain excess fat.

Giblets

Small pieces of fully cooked heart, gizzard, or liver can be given if prepared without butter, oil, salt, onion, garlic, or gravy. Chop them into small pieces and offer them as a supplement to the dog’s normal diet, not as a large meal.

Turkey parts and preparations to avoid

All turkey bones

Do not give your dog turkey bones, whether cooked or raw. This includes neck, wing, leg, thigh, rib, back, and carcass bones, as well as fragments hidden in shredded meat.

Cooked poultry bones can splinter and cause choking, mouth or throat injuries, intestinal punctures, constipation, or gastrointestinal blockage. Raw bones can also injure the digestive tract and may carry bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria.

Skin, fat, and drippings

Avoid turkey skin, visible fat, pan drippings, and fatty scraps. Roasted turkey skin may be especially rich because butter or oil is often added. Fatty foods can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis, which can be serious or life-threatening.

Seasoned turkey, stuffing, and gravy

Do not share turkey covered in or cooked with:

  • Onion, garlic, chives, or related ingredients
  • Salt or heavy seasoning
  • Butter or oil
  • Gravy, bouillon, or stock concentrates
  • Stuffing
  • Brine, marinades, or rubs
  • Smoked, cured, or deli-style turkey

Onion and garlic can be toxic to dogs. Gravy and bouillon-based sauces may contain excessive fat and sodium, as well as onion, garlic, or other seasonings. Gravy is not automatically poisonous, but it is not a reliable dog-safe topping.

Raw or undercooked turkey

Fully cook turkey before offering it. Raw or undercooked poultry can contain harmful bacteria and contaminate hands, surfaces, bowls, and other food in the home.

How to prepare turkey safely for a dog

  1. Set aside a plain portion. Do this before adding rubs, brine, butter, oil, gravy, or seasoning.
  2. Cook it thoroughly. Do not serve raw or undercooked turkey.
  3. Remove the skin and visible fat.
  4. Remove every bone. Check shredded or chopped meat carefully for fragments, especially meat taken from the neck, wings, or carcass.
  5. Cut it into small pieces.
  6. Start with a small amount, especially if turkey is new to your dog.
  7. Use it as a treat or topper. Mix a modest amount with your dog’s normal food rather than replacing the meal with turkey.

How much turkey can a dog eat?

There is no single serving size that suits every dog. Keep turkey and other treats to about 10% or less of daily food intake, with the rest coming from a complete and balanced diet. If you plan to use turkey regularly as a topper, ask your veterinarian how to keep the overall diet balanced.

Dogs that need extra caution

Ask your veterinarian before feeding turkey to a dog with pancreatitis, obesity, diabetes, food allergies, gastrointestinal disease, or a prescribed diet. A dog on a therapeutic diet may need to avoid table food altogether.

What to do if your dog eats unsafe turkey

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog eats bones, a large amount of fatty turkey, or turkey containing onion, garlic, or other concerning ingredients. Tell the clinic what was eaten, approximately how much, and when.

Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian or veterinary poison service specifically instructs you to. Vomiting can cause additional injury when a dog has swallowed a sharp object.

Seek urgent veterinary care for:

  • Choking, gagging, or difficulty breathing
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Abdominal pain, restlessness, or a hunched posture
  • Severe or bloody diarrhea
  • Weakness, collapse, or marked lethargy
  • Loss of appetite after eating bones or a fatty meal
  • Straining to defecate or inability to pass stool

Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, restlessness, shaking, diarrhea, and weakness. A possible bone obstruction can worsen over time, so call for advice rather than waiting for severe symptoms.

Common turkey claims that mislead dog owners

Claim What is more accurate
“Turkey is toxic to dogs.” Plain, cooked turkey meat is not inherently toxic. The main hazards are bones, fat, seasoning, and excessive portions.
“Raw turkey bones do not splinter, so they are safe.” Raw bones can still choke, injure, or obstruct the digestive tract and may carry bacteria.
“Only white meat is safe.” Plain, boneless dark meat can also be fed, although it is often fattier.
“A little gravy cannot hurt.” Gravy may contain excessive fat or salt, onion, garlic, or other seasonings. It is not a reliable dog-safe topping.
