Before agreeing to a test, treatment or procedure, ask your vet what they think is wrong, why they recommend this option, what alternatives are reasonable, and what could happen if you wait or decline. Also clarify the risks, likely outcome, urgency, cost, recovery and follow-up. Ask for the agreed plan and any spending limit to be recorded.
Consent should mean you understand the proposed care and have a meaningful chance to consider the options—not simply that you sign a form. The professional standards cited here are from the UK, Ontario and Victoria; rules vary by location. This is general guidance, not a substitute for advice about your pet’s specific case.
Start with the diagnosis and the reason for the recommendation
Ask what the vet thinks is happening
- What is your working diagnosis, and how certain are you?
- What do you know so far, and what remains unclear?
- Would more tests help confirm the diagnosis or change the treatment plan?
A recommendation may depend on a working diagnosis rather than a confirmed one. Ask the vet to explain any uncertainty and how it affects the decision.
Ask what this treatment is meant to achieve
- Why do you recommend this treatment for my pet?
- What benefit is realistic, and how likely is it to achieve that goal?
- How will we know whether it is working?
Ask the vet to explain unfamiliar terms in plain language and to relate the expected benefit to your pet’s condition.

Compare reasonable options, including waiting when appropriate
Ask what other reasonable choices are available for this animal. Depending on the case, options might include further testing, a different treatment, referral, monitoring, or no immediate treatment. Monitoring is not automatically safe or appropriate; ask the vet to explain whether it is reasonable for your pet and what it would involve.
For each option, ask about the expected benefit and its likelihood, common side effects, serious risks, consequences of declining or delaying care, possible costs, and recovery or home-care demands. The veterinarian can explain which options suit your pet’s circumstances.

Understand risks and likely outcomes
Ask about side effects and serious risks
- What side effects are common?
- What serious complications are possible, and which risks matter most for my pet?
- What signs would mean I should contact you or seek urgent care?
Ask what may happen under each choice
- What is the likely outcome with the recommended plan?
- What could happen if we choose another option, decline treatment, or wait?
- Could the condition become harder to treat if we delay?
Ask the vet to distinguish what is likely from what is possible, and to explain how uncertain the prognosis is.
Find out how urgent the decision is
Ask how much time you have to decide and whether waiting for a second opinion or specialist referral would affect your pet’s welfare. If the situation is urgent, ask the veterinarian to explain the time constraint and the risks of delay. In an emergency, waiting itself may harm the animal; the RCVS guidance says consent must be obtained unless doing so would cause a delay that adversely affects the animal’s welfare. RCVS, “11. Communication and consent”.

When time allows, ask whether referral or a second opinion is appropriate and what care can be provided while you consider it. The UK Government also advises owners that they can ask why a treatment was recommended and whether alternatives exist: Choosing a vet practice and treatments for your pet.
Clarify the estimate and any limit on extra costs
- What does the estimate include, and what might it leave out?
- What could make the final cost change, and might further treatment be needed?
- If I cannot be reached, what spending limit should the clinic follow before seeking my approval?
Costs are often estimates rather than fixed prices, and new information can change what care is needed. Discuss the estimate and a financial limit before treatment where the situation allows. If you have pet insurance, check your actual policy for limits, exclusions and referral conditions rather than assuming a treatment will be covered.

Plan for recovery, home care and follow-up
- What medication, monitoring or home care will my pet need, and for how long?
- Will there be follow-up visits or tests?
- What warning signs should I watch for, and whom should I contact if my pet worsens or does not respond?
- What should I do if a complication develops?
Make sure you understand what will be required at home and when the clinic expects to hear from you or see your pet again. Ask for written instructions if they would help you follow the plan.
Record what you agree to
Before proceeding, ask the clinic to record the agreed treatment, estimate and spending limit, along with any important follow-up instructions. Take the time you need to ask questions when the situation permits. Ontario’s veterinary standard, for example, includes explaining the diagnosis, proposed care, benefits, risks, alternatives, consequences of refusal and estimated costs, answering questions, and recording consent; local rules may differ.
