A full-service companion-animal clinic should cover preventive and wellness care, vaccinations, professional dentistry, common surgery, diagnostic imaging, laboratory access, medication management, pain control and urgent stabilization. It should also have a clearly explained 24/7 emergency plan—either care on site or referral to an appropriate emergency facility. A clinic does not need to perform every advanced test or specialty procedure itself, but it should be able to recognize when referral is needed and transfer records and care information reliably.
What “full-service” means in veterinary care
“Full-service” describes the breadth of primary care and the systems around it, not a promise that one building performs every possible procedure. A general practice usually manages routine prevention, common illnesses, dentistry and standard surgery. An emergency hospital is organized for unscheduled, time-critical cases. A specialty or referral practice handles advanced diagnostics, complex surgery and second opinions, often with board-certified specialists.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) uses voluntary accreditation criteria to describe a broad-service practice. Its eligibility language includes preventive care, dentistry under anesthesia, surgery, quality on-site diagnostic imaging and access to emergency services or an appropriate referral 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These are accreditation standards, not universal laws; local rules, staffing and the species a clinic treats can change what is available.

Wellness examinations and individualized plans
Routine examinations should be more than a quick vaccine appointment. The veterinarian should review weight, nutrition, behavior, parasite risks, reproductive status, dental health and age-related concerns, then create a preventive plan for that individual animal. There is no single visit schedule or vaccine protocol that fits every pet; life stage, lifestyle, travel, exposure and medical history matter.

Vaccinations and health maintenance
A full-service practice should provide recommended vaccines, discuss benefits and risks, maintain an accessible immunization record and explain when boosters are due. Preventive care may also include parasite testing or prevention, microchip services, nutritional counseling and screening appropriate to the animal’s age and risk profile.
Client education and follow-up
Owners should receive understandable instructions for home care, medication, warning signs and follow-up. The clinic should tell you whom to contact if a problem worsens and how records will be supplied if another veterinarian becomes involved.
Diagnostics and treatment access
On-site diagnostic imaging
AAHA’s full-service eligibility description specifically calls for quality on-site diagnostic imaging. Depending on the clinic, this may include radiography or ultrasound; the exact equipment and interpretation process should be confirmed directly. Ask whether images are interpreted by the attending veterinarian, a teleradiology service or a specialist, and how quickly results are normally returned.

Not every test has to be performed in the building. AAHA allows hematology, serology, microbial cultures and toxicology to be completed in-house or by an outside laboratory. A capable clinic should explain which tests can be run immediately, which are sent out, expected turnaround times and how urgent results are communicated.

Care for common acute and chronic problems
Primary-care veterinarians commonly evaluate and treat problems such as skin and ear disease, gastrointestinal illness, urinary conditions, endocrine disease and mobility concerns. A full-service clinic should have a process for monitoring chronic cases, adjusting treatment and deciding when a patient needs specialty input rather than repeatedly treating symptoms without a diagnosis.
Pharmacy and medication safety
Medication services may include dispensing prescriptions, preparing appropriate formulations and explaining dosing, storage, interactions and missed doses. Ask how the clinic verifies prescriptions, labels medications and handles recalls or shortages. A pharmacy is useful only when it is supported by accurate records and clear communication.
Professional dentistry, anesthesia and pain management
What professional dental care includes
AAHA’s eligibility criteria call for dentistry under anesthesia, except for practices that provide emergency services only. Veterinary dentistry can include examination, cleaning, dental radiographs, adjustment, filing, extraction or repair when medically indicated. A proper dental plan should identify disease and treatment options rather than treating visible tartar alone.

Professional dentistry complements, rather than replaces, home oral care. A veterinarian can recommend an appropriate toothbrush, toothpaste or other home-care method for your pet. Home products should not be presented as a substitute for an examination or treatment of painful dental disease.

Questions about anesthesia
Ask who administers and supervises anesthesia, what monitoring is used, how pain is assessed and treated, and how recovery is observed. AAHA’s eligibility page states that anesthesia must be administered by a veterinarian or trained team member under on-premises veterinarian supervision, with at least one listed monitoring device for procedures under general anesthesia. A responsible clinic should be able to describe its monitoring and recovery process in plain language.
Pain assessment and control
Pain management should cover the procedure and the recovery period. The team should assess pain using an approach suited to the species, explain expected discomfort, provide a medication plan when needed and tell you which signs require a call or recheck.
Surgery and urgent care
Common surgery
General practices often provide routine procedures such as sterilization, mass removal, wound repair and other surgeries within their training and facilities. The clinic should explain what it performs routinely, what requires a consultation and what is referred. Do not assume that an advertised “surgery” label includes complex orthopedic, neurologic or cancer procedures.
Recommended Free Tools
Surgical facilities and sterility
Major procedures should be performed in an appropriate dedicated surgical suite under the clinic’s applicable standards. Ask how instruments are sterilized, how the surgical area is separated from general treatment spaces, who assists the surgeon and what monitoring continues after the operation.

Emergency stabilization and the after-hours plan
A full-service primary clinic should be able to recognize emergencies and provide initial stabilization appropriate to its capabilities. AAHA’s accreditation language allows emergency care to be provided by the practice or through referral, but calls for a clear 24-hour, seven-day arrangement. That does not mean every general clinic is open overnight.
Before an emergency occurs, find out whether your clinic offers on-site after-hours care, uses a named emergency hospital, or follows another explicit referral route. Confirm the phone number, address, transport instructions and whether the emergency facility can access your pet’s records. Ask what happens when your pet is hospitalized elsewhere and how the primary veterinarian resumes care afterward.
Hospitalization, oxygen and nursing support
Some clinics can hospitalize patients for observation, fluids, injections or recovery; others transfer patients to an emergency or specialty hospital. Ask whether overnight monitoring is continuous or intermittent, which staff members are present, and whether oxygen support is available for patients that need it. A clinic should state clearly when its facilities are not suitable for intensive care and arrange transfer rather than implying that every patient can be managed on site.
Referral and specialist coordination
When referral is appropriate
A primary clinic does not need to offer every specialty. Advanced imaging, complex surgery, unusual laboratory testing and second opinions may be referred. AAHA distinguishes referral practices from general practices; accredited referral facilities have board-certified specialists on staff.

What a good referral process looks like
Referral should be a coordinated handoff, not simply a phone number. The primary team should explain why referral is recommended, discuss urgency and likely next steps, provide relevant records and imaging, and help arrange the appointment when possible. Costs, estimates and decision points should be discussed before treatment whenever circumstances allow.
AAHA’s 2025 referral guidance emphasizes collaboration and communication across the referral process. After specialty treatment, the primary clinic should receive a report, reconcile medications and clarify who is responsible for follow-up, monitoring and future decisions.
Safety systems behind the service list
A long menu of procedures is meaningful only when the clinic has safeguards to deliver them. Look for evidence of:

- Anesthesia oversight: trained staff, veterinarian supervision, documented monitoring and recovery observation.
- Pain management: pain assessment, treatment options and discharge instructions.
- Infection prevention: cleanable treatment areas, instrument sterilization and protocols for contagious patients.
- Emergency readiness: oxygen and stabilization equipment appropriate to the clinic’s scope, plus a written transfer plan.
- Diagnostic quality: maintained imaging equipment, laboratory quality controls and a process for reviewing results.
- Medication handling: accurate labels, storage, expiration checks and records of prescriptions.
- Medical records: complete histories, test results, anesthesia records, discharge instructions and prompt release to another veterinarian.
- Communication: clear estimates, consent discussions, follow-up calls and a named contact for questions.
How to compare two local clinics
When service lists look similar, compare the practical details rather than counting procedure names.
| Comparison point | What to ask |
|---|---|
| On-site versus referred care | Which dentistry, imaging, laboratory tests and surgeries are performed here, and which are sent elsewhere? |
| After-hours access | Who answers at night, where is the emergency facility, and how are records transferred? |
| Anesthesia and recovery | Who supervises anesthesia, what monitoring is used, and how long is recovery observed? |
| Pain control | How is pain assessed, what options are available, and what will the discharge plan include? |
| Referral coordination | Will the clinic arrange the appointment, send records and imaging, discuss costs and follow up afterward? |
| Species and case scope | Which species does the practice treat, and what conditions trigger referral? |
| Continuity | Can you obtain records promptly, speak with the care team and reach the clinic for recheck questions? |
A practical checklist before choosing a clinic
- Confirm that the clinic treats your species and accepts new patients.
- Request the current routine hours, holiday policy and exact after-hours instructions.
- Ask which vaccines, dental procedures, imaging studies, laboratory tests and surgeries are available on site.
- Ask how anesthesia, pain control, infection prevention and post-procedure monitoring are handled.
- Find out whether hospitalization and oxygen support are available, and when transfer is recommended.
- Ask how estimates, consent, payment policies and urgent decisions are handled.
- Confirm how records, images and laboratory results are shared with specialists or another veterinarian.
- Save the emergency phone number and location before you need them.
What a full-service clinic does not necessarily include
The term does not guarantee 24-hour physical opening, every advanced imaging modality, every laboratory test, overnight intensive care or every type of surgery. Availability varies with species, location, staffing, equipment and relationships with emergency and specialty facilities. A clinic can still provide strong primary care when it refers work beyond its scope, provided the limits are explained and the handoff is organized.
Using accreditation information wisely
AAHA accreditation is voluntary. Its eligibility language and standards overview, including the overview published October 1, 2025, are useful benchmarks for asking about imaging, laboratory, pharmacy, anesthesia, pain management, records, facilities and referral systems. They should not be presented as a universal legal requirement for every veterinary practice. Verify current services, hours, fees and referral arrangements directly with the clinic, because these can change.
