Some cats may avoid citrus peel or other strong odors, but there is no dependable scent that every cat hates. More importantly, a smell that a cat avoids is not necessarily safe to use as a repellent: concentrated essential oils can harm cats. Choose a humane way to address the behavior, and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service if your cat may have been exposed to a harmful product.

Which smells may cats dislike?

Cats Protection says cats dislike citrus fruit peel. Cornell Feline Health Center also mentions citrus or pungent odors as possible deterrents in the specific context of preventing cats from chewing holiday trees. Cornell cautions that cats differ and a scent may not deter every cat.

These are examples of possible reactions, not a universal list or proof that a scent will keep cats away from a particular place. No measured rate of feline scent aversion is established by these sources.

Citrus peel

A cat may avoid citrus peel, but that does not make citrus oil or peel a dependable or automatically safe repellent. ASPCA identifies citrus essential oils and plant material as potential hazards; its orange entry distinguishes edible fruit from skins and other plant material, which can cause problems. Do not apply citrus oil or leave peel where a cat might eat it.

Perfumes and deodorants

Cats Protection notes that many perfumes and deodorants smell very strong to cats. Strong odor does not mean a product will reliably deter a cat, and scented products should not be applied to cats.

Why a disliked smell may still be unsafe

A cat’s possible dislike of a smell is separate from the risk of exposure. Essential oils are concentrated products, and cats can be exposed through their coat, skin, paws, or by swallowing or inhaling them. Risk varies with the product’s concentration, formulation, and quality.

Cornell lists peppermint oil as toxic to cats and warns that liquid potpourri may contain essential oils that can be absorbed through skin or orally. Cornell quotes Gretchen Schoeffler, DVM, Section Chief of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Services: “If cats do ingest essential oils, the oils can cause significant chemical burns to the mouth, tongue and esophagus.” ASPCA also warns that exposure can cause effects ranging from gastrointestinal upset to central nervous system depression, liver damage, or aspiration pneumonia.

Should you use scent to keep cats away?

Do not use peppermint, tea tree, citrus, or other concentrated essential oils as DIY cat repellents. ASPCA advises against direct application of essential oils and recommends keeping them out of areas pets can access unless pets are supervised or a veterinarian has approved their use. The sources cited here do not establish that commercial scent sprays are both safe and effective.

If a cat is entering a garden, chewing a tree, or scratching furniture, address that specific behavior without applying a potentially harmful scent. Favor humane approaches that do not trap or frighten cats; scent aversion alone is not a reliable solution. If you use strong-smelling products in the home, Cats Protection advises avoiding essential oils where possible, cleaning spills promptly, and ventilating the area.

What to do if your cat is exposed

If your cat has walked through oil, gotten a product on its coat or skin, inhaled it, or licked or swallowed it, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Have the product container or ingredient information available if possible. Do not try home treatment or wait for a scent reaction to pass before seeking advice.
