What to Ask Your Vet Before Your Pug Has Anesthesia

Pugs face increased airway concerns under anesthesia. Use these vet questions to discuss your dog’s history, airway plan, monitoring, recovery, and instructions.

Before your pug has anesthesia, ask how the team is accounting for the breed’s increased risk of upper-airway obstruction, what your dog’s health history means for the plan, who will monitor them, and how recovery will be managed. Pugs are brachycephalic, but that risk factor does not predict that an individual dog will have a complication. Your veterinarian must assess your pug and the procedure to explain their specific risks and choices.

What makes anesthesia planning different for a pug?

Ask how your pug’s airway shape and any breathing symptoms affect the assessment and plan. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) identifies brachycephalic dogs and cats as more prone to upper-airway obstruction and as having higher airway-related anesthetic complication rates than nonbrachycephalic patients. That is a reason for individualized planning, not a prediction that your pug will have a problem. AAHA’s preanesthetic guidance and its brachycephalic-patient guidance explain the concerns.

You can ask: “Which aspects of my pug’s breathing or airway matter most for this procedure, and what would change your plan?”

What history and medicines should I tell the vet about?

Give the team a clear account of your pug’s current health and past anesthetic experiences. Mention symptoms even if they seem familiar or mild, and tell the clinic if anything has changed recently.

Which examination or tests are appropriate, and what could change the plan?

Ask what the veterinarian wants to learn from the physical assessment or any proposed tests, and what findings could affect timing, treatment, or whether referral is worth discussing. The assessment should reflect your pug’s history, current condition, and planned procedure; the available guidance does not establish one mandatory set of laboratory tests or imaging for every pug. RCVS Knowledge’s brachycephalic anesthesia resource discusses preanesthetic assessment and testing considerations.

  • What oxygen support will be available, and how will you respond to airway obstruction?
  • What should I understand about the airway plan for this pug and this procedure?

Guidance on brachycephalic patients emphasizes preparation for airway challenges, oxygen support, and close attention during recovery. How should we weigh the individual risks, benefits, and alternatives?

Ask the veterinarian to explain the expected benefit and urgency of the procedure, the main risks for your pug and this specific procedure, and any reasonable alternatives. For an elective procedure, ask what findings might lead the team to change the timing or discuss referral. Breed alone cannot determine your pug’s personal risk; the veterinarian needs to consider the examination and medical records to advise you.
