What you should pack also depends on whether you are attending with your own pet, bringing an adoptable foster or rescue animal, or adopting an animal to take home.
Before you leave, confirm the event’s rules
Check the event page or call the organizer to verify the current hours and location, whether personal pets may attend, whether introductions with household pets are allowed, and what documents or equipment are required. Details can change; ASPCA advises checking the current event page before traveling: ASPCA adoption event information.
Use this quick list when you contact the organizer:
- May I bring my current pet, and are pet-to-pet introductions permitted?
- What identification, household information, or animal records should I bring?
- Will the event provide a carrier or leash if I adopt?
- Are there particular restraint, health, or paperwork rules for animals attending?
If you are applying to adopt
Bring identification and any requested household details
Bring valid government-issued photo identification if you plan to apply. Depending on the organization, you may also be asked for proof of your current address or information about the adults in your household. These are local requirements, not universal adoption rules. Check the organization’s instructions in advance; for example, see ASPCA’s event guidance, Montgomery County Animal Services’ adoption information, and King County Regional Animal Services’ adoption information.

Have household pet records available if requested
If the organization asks for records for animals already at home, bring copies or make sure you can access them. Montgomery County, for example, requires copies of household pets’ rabies certificates at a particular stage of its process; that does not make the requirement universal.
If you are bringing an adoptable foster or rescue animal
Confirm which records and forms the organization expects
Ask your rescue or event coordinator which veterinary records, vaccination details, licensing documents, and event forms to carry. Best Friends Animal Society’s event-organizer toolkit recommends veterinary records showing sterilization and vaccination status, the animal’s license or rabies certificate, and an animal information flyer or cage card: Best Friends’ adoption-event toolkit.

Pack safe, suitable restraint for an adoptable dog
For a dog attending as an adoptable animal, use a secure, well-fitted collar or harness and a non-retractable leash no longer than 6 feet, following the event’s specific rules. PetSmart Charities’ safety guidance also recommends handling only one leashed dog at a time, keeping a few feet of space from people and other pets, and avoiding nose-to-nose contact between leashed dogs: PetSmart Charities’ adoption-event safety guidance.
Plan for breaks, not just supplies
A busy public event may not suit every dog. The cited guidance recommends bringing only dogs that are healthy, vaccinated, and non-aggressive. Give a dog a break or remove them from the event if they seem stressed, overwhelmed, ill, or aggressive. Follow the organizer’s setup for quiet time; the event guide suggests covering crate sides with a blanket for privacy while keeping ventilation clear.

If you adopt and will take an animal home
Arrange secure transport before the event
For a cat or small animal, confirm whether you need to bring a secure carrier or whether the event provides one. ASPCA NYC requires cats and kittens leaving its events to travel in a secure carrier, which may be brought or provided: ASPCA NYC adoption information. King County lists a temporary carrier for cats and a temporary leash for dogs among its adoption provisions: King County adoption information.
For a dog, ask whether the shelter supplies a temporary leash or expects you to bring one. Some organizations ask adopters to bring their own carrier or leash, so check rather than assuming supplies are included. For instance, consult Montgomery County Animal Services or King County Regional Animal Services for their local instructions.
