Before pickup, have a fitted collar with an ID tag, a leash, food and water bowls, the dog’s current food, a soft place to rest, and a few suitable toys and treats. Set up a quiet area and consider a crate, pen, or gate only if it suits the dog. Ask the rescue about fit, diet, health needs, and the dog’s experience with confinement.

What to have ready before pickup

  • Collar and ID tag: Put your name and phone number on the tag. Check the collar’s fit with the rescue before leaving; a loose collar can slip off. Best Friends Animal Society recommends getting an ID tag before bringing a dog home in its new-dog guidance.
  • Leash: Bring one for the trip home and walks. Keep the dog leashed unless you are in a secure fenced area. Ask the rescue whether a harness or martingale collar would better suit the dog, and have any gear fit-checked.
  • Food and water bowls, and familiar food: Ask what the dog currently eats and whether there are dietary instructions. Start with that food rather than choosing a new brand based on a general checklist. Keep fresh water available and wash the bowls regularly.
  • Bed, blanket, or towels: Prepare a soft resting spot in a quiet area. A familiar-smelling item from the rescue may also help, if one is available.
  • A few toys and treats: Choose items appropriate for the dog’s size and chewing habits. Ask about food allergies or other restrictions before offering treats.
  • Waste bags: Keep them handy for walks and outings. Puppy pads may be useful in some situations, but they are not a universal need for adult rescue dogs.
  • Grooming tools: Choose tools for the dog’s coat. The ASPCA’s general dog-care checklist includes a brush, comb, and flea comb. Ask a veterinarian before selecting flea or tick medication.

ASPCA adoption guidance advises having supplies ready before arrival and notes that dogs need time to acclimate to a new environment and routine: “Finding Your Fido: Tips for Adopting Your New BFF.”

Should you buy a crate, exercise pen, or baby gate?

These are options for creating safe boundaries, not mandatory purchases for every rescue dog. Choose based on the dog’s comfort with confinement, the area you need to restrict, and whether you can secure the setup reliably.

Option When it may help What to check
Crate When the dog is comfortable resting in one and you want a defined resting or management space. Best Friends’ foster guidance says a crate should let the dog stand and turn around, without being much larger. A dog with a difficult confinement history may find a crate frightening; ask the rescue about the dog’s experience before using one. See the Best Friends Dog Foster Care Manual.
Exercise pen When you need a bounded area that gives the dog more room than a crate. Check that the pen is appropriate for the dog’s size and behavior and cannot be pushed over or escaped from.
Baby gate When you need to keep the dog out of particular rooms or separate spaces. Check that the gate and its latches are secure and suitable for the dog.

Best Friends discusses confinement and other setup choices in its guidance for bringing a new dog home. The right choice depends on the individual dog; do not force a crate simply because it appears on a supply list.

Dog-proof the home before arrival

Set up the resting area and check the home before the dog comes in. Move chemicals, medications, people food, trash, wires, and small or tempting chewables out of reach. Secure doors, yard boundaries, and gate latches. ASPCA and Best Friends both include home preparation and safe management in their adoption guidance and new-dog guidance.

Ask the rescue these questions

  • What food is the dog eating now, and are there dietary restrictions or known allergies?
  • What collar, harness, or leash setup fits the dog, and can you check it before we leave?
  • How does the dog respond to crates, pens, gates, and being left alone?
  • Are there medications, health concerns, or veterinary instructions we need to follow?
  • What introduction and settling-in approach does the rescue recommend for this dog?

Use the rescue’s answers to adapt the checklist. For medication, follow veterinary direction: the ASPCA advises against giving a dog medication unless it has been prescribed by a veterinarian. See ASPCA General Dog Care.

Keep the first days calm

Dogs differ in how quickly they settle into a new home. Give the dog a quiet place to rest, keep a consistent routine, and avoid overwhelming them with people or pets. Best Friends’ foster guidance recommends minimizing introductions during the first couple of weeks for foster dogs; that is program-specific guidance, not a fixed timeline for every adoption. Follow the rescue’s advice for your dog.
