Before a large dog arrives, have five things ready: the food it already eats, sturdy food and water bowls, a well-fitting collar with a current ID tag, a leash strong and comfortable enough for the dog and handler, and a washable sleeping place with room to stretch out. Also prepare a safe area, remove household hazards, and book a veterinary examination soon after arrival.
Everything else depends on the individual dog, coat, age, household and travel plans. A crate, toys, grooming tools, cleanup supplies and travel equipment can make the transition easier, but none is automatically right for every large dog.

The five supplies to have ready on day one
1. The dog’s current food
Ask the breeder, rescue or previous owner exactly what the dog is eating and have that food available before pickup. A familiar diet avoids making arrival day more complicated. The appropriate long-term food depends on age, adult size, activity level and health, so ask a veterinarian before changing diets or adding supplements. There is no single food that is best for every large dog.
Keep the package or a clear photo of its label. That gives your veterinarian useful information about ingredients, feeding directions and any diet the dog has already tolerated. Do not buy medication, vitamins or other health products from a generic shopping list; preventive care should be selected for this dog after an examination.

2. Stable food and water bowls
Choose bowls that are difficult to tip, simple to wash and large enough for the dog to eat and drink without crowding. Put them in a designated eating area before the dog comes home so the first meal does not happen beside unpacked boxes or household traffic.
“Large dog” does not by itself mean a raised feeder is necessary. The available guidance supports choosing bowls for stability, cleanability and the individual dog, not buying an elevated stand solely because of size.
3. A collar, identification tag and leash
Fit the collar securely without making it tight. Attach an ID tag with current contact details before leaving the pickup location, and check the fit again as the dog settles in or grows. A microchip, when applicable, is an additional identification measure to discuss with the veterinarian, but it does not replace a visible tag for everyday recovery.
Recommended Free Tools
Select a leash that is comfortable for the handler and appropriate for the dog’s strength. The right choice is a secure fit and a setup both people can control, rather than a universal length or style. Test the collar and leash together indoors before the first walk.
4. A washable place to sleep
Provide a bed or another defined sleeping area large enough for the dog to lie fully stretched out. Washable construction matters because a new arrival may track dirt, shed heavily or have accidents while learning the household routine. Put the bed in a quiet spot where the dog can rest without being isolated from normal family activity.
Rank #2
- IDEAL FOR 90-110 LB DOGS: Measures 48.5 x 30.25 x 32 inches - perfect for German Shepherds, Collies, Huskies & similar breeds. For dogs near 110 lbs, consider sizing up to our 54-inch drop-pin model so they have plenty of room to get comfortable.
- WE DON'T CUT CORNERS, WE PERFECT THEM: Precision welding, rounded corner clips & slide-bolt latches with Paw Block mitigate snags, cuts & escapes. With rigorous safety testing, iCrate provides peace of mind knowing your dog is safe while you're away.

Do not assume the most expensive or thickest bed will be preferred. Observe whether the dog chooses a cool floor, a padded surface or a more enclosed corner, then adjust the setup while keeping one reliable resting place available.
5. A safe way to manage the home
Before arrival, decide which rooms the dog may enter and how you will prevent access to unsafe areas. A crate can be part of that plan, but a secure room or exercise area with gates may suit the dog and household better. The goal is supervised, safe confinement when you cannot watch the dog—not a mandatory product for every home.

Bed and sleeping area
Measure the dog if possible while it is lying naturally, then allow enough length for a full stretch and enough width to turn around. If the dog is still growing, choose a setup that can accommodate its expected adult size or can be expanded. Keep the cover removable and washable, and make sure the bed does not block a doorway or create a tripping hazard.
No cited authority provides one universal large-dog bed measurement chart. Breed labels are not a substitute for the individual dog’s body length and sleeping posture.
Bowls
A bowl should sit firmly on the floor and remain stable when the dog nudges it. Select a diameter and depth that let the dog reach food and water comfortably without constantly pushing the bowl around. Stainless steel, ceramic or another easy-clean material can work; the practical tests are stability, cleanability and suitability for the dog.

Collar and leash
Check the collar at home with the dog calm, then recheck it during the first weeks. It should not slip over the head during ordinary movement, yet it should not press into the neck. Inspect stitching, clips and attachment points regularly. If the dog is exceptionally strong or the handler has limited control, ask a qualified trainer or veterinarian for an individualized walking setup rather than guessing from a product label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCrate or secure area
If you use a crate, choose one that allows the dog to stand, turn and lie down naturally, with adequate ventilation. A crate can provide a resting and travel space, but it should not be purchased on the assumption that every large dog must be crated. A gated room or other secure area may be a better fit for the dog’s temperament, your schedule and the layout of the home.
Useful additions that depend on the dog and household
Waste bags and cleanup supplies
Keep waste bags where you will leave for walks and where the dog is most likely to go out. An enzymatic cleaner is a practical option for indoor messes because it is designed for pet odors and residue; it is a cleanup aid, not a substitute for supervision or veterinary advice if accidents persist.
Toys and feeding enrichment
Begin with a small variety of toys suited to the dog’s age and size rather than buying a large collection before you know its preferences. Include options for chewing, carrying and quiet activity, and inspect each item for damage. Feeding toys can turn part of a meal into an activity; RSPCA preparation guidance lists them among essential equipment, while other checklists simply call for suitable toys. Choose what matches the dog’s abilities and your willingness to supervise.
Discard or replace a toy when pieces can be pulled off or swallowed. A toy that is safe for a small puppy may not withstand a powerful adult dog.

Grooming basics
Buy tools for the actual coat: a brush or comb, dog-friendly shampoo and nail-care equipment are common starting points, but the correct type varies with coat length, density and grooming needs. If the dog has a specialized coat or arrives heavily matted, obtain professional guidance instead of forcing a painful home session.
Travel equipment
Plan the trip home before pickup. RSPCA guidance includes travel equipment, but the available sources do not establish one restraint product or model for every vehicle and dog. Choose a secure travel arrangement appropriate to your vehicle, follow local safety requirements and keep the leash and identification available for transfers between the vehicle and destination.
Prepare the house before the dog walks through the door
The American Veterinary Medical Association states: “Be sure to pet-proof your home to prevent injury to your dog or damage to your possessions.” Walk through each room at the dog’s eye level and remove or secure hazards before arrival.
- Put medications, cleaning products, chemicals and small swallowable objects behind closed doors.
- Secure electrical cords, unstable furniture and anything the dog could pull down.
- Move food, rubbish and household plants out of reach unless you have verified they are safe.
- Close off stairs, balconies, garages, workshops or other spaces the dog cannot safely enter.
- Choose one eating area and one sleeping area, then keep pathways clear around them.
- Set up gates or a secure room for times when direct supervision is impossible.
Introduce the home gradually. A large dog can physically reach shelves, counters and door handles that a smaller dog cannot, so reassess hazards after observing how this individual explores.

A practical arrival-day setup
- Finish the safety sweep. Close restricted rooms, secure hazards and place the bed, bowls and confinement setup where they will remain.
- Check identification before travel. Put on the fitted collar and current tag, and confirm that the leash clip closes completely.
- Bring the familiar food. Feed the dog’s existing diet initially and record what, when and how much it eats so you can discuss nutrition with the veterinarian.
- Keep the first exploration controlled. Show the dog its sleeping, eating and toilet areas before opening the entire house. Use the secure area when you cannot supervise.
- Observe rather than force. Let the dog choose when to rest, investigate a toy or approach a new surface. Avoid turning every item into a training test on the first day.
- Arrange veterinary care. Schedule an examination soon after arrival and bring adoption or medical records, the food label and a list of questions about preventive care.
Food and veterinary decisions you should not make from a generic list
Age, size, activity and health all affect nutrition. A growing puppy, an adult adopted dog and a dog with a diagnosed condition may need different plans even if they weigh the same. Keep the current food available, then ask the veterinarian whether a change is appropriate and how to make it.

The early examination is also the right time to discuss vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, weight targets and any breed- or history-related concerns. The sources support individualized preventive advice, not a universal bundle of products or doses. Never substitute an over-the-counter medication for professional guidance.
AAHA notes that adopted adult dogs may need weeks to settle and build a relationship. During that period, appetite, sleep, toileting and comfort around people can change. Keep routines predictable and report concerning changes to the veterinarian rather than responding by buying more products.
Common buying mistakes and how to correct them
Buying for an imaginary adult instead of this dog
Breed-based assumptions can leave you with a collar that slips, a bed that is too short or grooming tools that do not suit the coat. Use the dog’s current measurements and behavior, then replace or upgrade equipment as its needs become clear.
Treating optional equipment as mandatory
A crate, raised bowl, large toy haul or specialized feeder is not automatically required because a dog is large. First provide safe confinement, comfortable rest, food, water, identification and walking control. Add equipment when you can explain the specific problem it solves.
Changing food and products too quickly
Discarding the familiar food or buying supplements before a veterinary conversation can create unnecessary variables. Keep the initial setup simple, document what the dog is receiving and make changes deliberately.
Ignoring fit after the first fitting
Collars loosen, puppies grow and dogs lose or gain weight. Recheck identification and equipment regularly, especially after grooming, bathing or a growth spurt. Replace anything frayed, cracked, unstable or difficult to clean.
Confusing shopping with preparation
A full cart cannot compensate for an unsecured home or no plan for supervision. Complete the pet-proofing walk-through, establish eating and sleeping areas, and book veterinary care alongside your purchases.

What to have ready, in priority order
- Before pickup: familiar food, bowls, fitted collar and ID tag, leash, washable sleeping area, and a pet-proofed route through the home.
- For the first days: a secure area or appropriately sized ventilated crate if you choose to use one, waste bags, basic cleanup supplies and a few suitable toys.
- For ongoing care: coat-appropriate grooming tools, a travel plan and a veterinary appointment for nutrition and preventive-care decisions.
Start with equipment that is safe, washable, correctly fitted and easy for your household to use. Let the dog’s measurements, behavior, coat and veterinary advice determine what you add next.
