What to Buy Before Bringing Home a Shelter Cat: A Complete Preparation Checklist

Before pickup, have a secure carrier, food and water dishes, a litter box and litter, scratching material, and a prepared quiet room. Interactive toys and a dedicated bed are useful but optional. Ask the shelter which food and litter the cat already uses, and check with a veterinarian about age-, activity-, and health-specific needs. Adoption agencies may provide some supplies or require particular arrangements, so confirm their instructions before buying.

Confirm the shelter’s instructions before you shop

Start by asking the shelter what the cat is eating, which litter it uses, whether it has medical or dietary instructions, and whether the agency sends any supplies home. Matching familiar food and litter can make the first transition less disruptive and prevents you from purchasing duplicates.

Ask how the cat must be transported. The ASPCA Adoption Center in New York, for example, requires adopted cats and kittens to leave in a secure pet carrier. That is a policy of that location, not a rule that every shelter follows, but it illustrates why a carrier should be ready before pickup. See the ASPCA Adoption Center NYC policy and the broader ASPCA general cat-care checklist.

Also tell everyone in the household when the cat is arriving and what their role will be. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises that, before bringing a new cat home, all family members should welcome the addition. Its preparation guidance is in the AVMA “Selecting a Cat” brochure.

Essential purchases for pickup day

Supply Why you need it Selection or setup point
Secure cat carrier Safe transport from the shelter and for future veterinary visits Choose secure containment with enough room for the cat and the trip; the cited sources do not compare particular designs or brands.
Food dish and water bowl Ready access to food and water immediately after arrival Use separate, stable dishes and place them in the prepared eating area.
Litter box and litter Provides an elimination area from the first hour at home Begin with the litter the shelter reports using and place the box somewhere accessible and calm.
Scratching post or pad Gives the cat an appropriate scratching outlet ASPCA guidance favors a sturdy post at least three feet high, stable enough not to wobble, and covered with rough material such as sisal, burlap, or tree bark.
Safe-room supplies Creates a controlled landing place while the cat adjusts Use a quiet room or area, a resting option, and barriers or gates if access must be limited.
Interactive toys Offers play and engagement once the cat is comfortable Optional at first; introduce toys without crowding the cat during its initial retreat.

1. A secure carrier

Buy or borrow the carrier before leaving for the shelter, and check that every door and latch closes securely. The carrier should contain the cat during the entire drive rather than allowing the cat to ride loose in the vehicle. Prioritize reliable containment and a fit appropriate to the cat and journey; the available guidance does not establish a universally best carrier style, material, or brand.

Keep the carrier level while carrying it, avoid opening it outdoors, and place it in the prepared room before releasing the cat. If the shelter has a carrier requirement, follow that agency’s exact policy rather than assuming a substitute will be accepted.

2. Food and water dishes

Set out one dish for food and a separate bowl for water before the cat arrives. Ask the shelter for the current diet, feeding schedule, and any restrictions. ASPCA notes that a cat’s age, activity level, and health affect what and how much it should eat, so treat the shelter’s information as a starting point and ask a veterinarian for individualized advice. Do not make a sudden diet change simply because a different food was convenient to buy.

Place the dishes in a quiet eating spot away from the litter box. Have enough of the familiar food for the first days while you arrange veterinary guidance and decide whether any gradual transition is needed.

3. Litter box and litter

Buy a box before pickup and use the litter type the shelter identifies whenever possible. ASPCA recommends at least one litter box per cat plus one extra. For one cat, that recommendation means two boxes; for two cats, three boxes. This is ASPCA guidance, not a guarantee that elimination problems cannot occur.

Choose locations the cat can reach without passing through a frightening or congested area. ASPCA advises keeping boxes away from busy, loud, or intimidating places. Provide more than one accessible location when your home layout permits, and make sure the cat can enter and leave without a door being accidentally closed.

Litter-box trouble can involve the box itself, the litter, the location, conflict with another animal, or a medical condition. If accidents begin, do not respond by punishing the cat. Check access and cleanliness, preserve the familiar litter while you investigate, and contact a veterinarian when illness could be involved. ASPCA’s behavior guidance is available in “Litter Box Problems.”

4. Scratching material

Provide a scratching post or pad from the first day rather than waiting for the cat to scratch furniture. ASPCA describes a sturdy post at least three feet high, stable enough that it will not wobble, and wrapped or covered in rough material such as sisal, burlap, or tree bark. Those dimensions and materials are ASPCA’s practical guidance, not a universal product standard.

Secure the item so a cautious cat can investigate it without it tipping. If the cat ignores it initially, leave it available in the safe area and introduce play later; do not force the cat’s paws onto the surface.

5. A quiet room and a resting place

Prepare one quiet, safe room or defined area before the cat comes home. It should contain the food and water station, litter access, a place to rest, and room for the carrier to remain open as a retreat. ASPCA’s adoption advice emphasizes a dedicated safe space during the adjustment period.

Eccliy 10 Pcs Kitten Starter Kit for Indoor, Classic, Medium, Blue
  • Kitten Starter Kit for Indoor Cats: our kitten starter kit has 10 pieces kitten needs, including a breathable mesh cat bag, a kitten litter box, a feeding bowl, a cat climbing frame, a cat teaser, a cat mat, a cat collar, a cotton rope badminton, two red springs

A commercial bed is optional. ASPCA lists either a bed or a box lined with a warm blanket or towel. A plain cardboard box and washable fabric can therefore meet the initial need while you learn what the cat prefers. Keep the resting option away from the litter box and in a location where the cat can retreat without being cornered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Interactive toys

Interactive toys are an optional purchase on the first shopping trip. ASPCA includes them on its general supply list, but a newly arrived cat may prefer hiding and observing before playing. Buy a small selection rather than filling the room, and supervise play with any toy that has strings, detachable parts, or other pieces that could be swallowed. Put toys away when you cannot monitor them if their construction presents that risk.

Pet-proof the home before the carrier arrives

Walk through the safe room and the routes the cat may eventually explore. The AVMA and ASPCA both advise preparing the home in advance. Complete these checks before pickup:

  • Secure electrical cords and dangling loops that a cat could chew or become entangled in.
  • Check windows, screens, exterior doors, and any gaps through which the cat could escape.
  • Remove or securely isolate toxic plants, medicines, cleaning products, small objects, and other hazardous items.
  • Use gates or closed doors to limit access to unsafe rooms while the cat is settling in.
  • Tell household members to keep the safe-room door closed and to approach quietly.

The AVMA brochure also recommends preparing distinct places to eat, sleep, and eliminate. Arrange those areas before the cat enters the home so you do not need to move bowls or a litter box while the cat is trying to orient itself.

Set up the first-day room in a practical order

  1. Place the litter box first. Put it in an accessible, low-traffic location and keep the route clear. If you are following ASPCA’s one-box-per-cat-plus-one recommendation, position the additional boxes before the cat arrives.
  2. Create the eating station. Set the food dish and water bowl apart from the litter area, then portion the familiar food according to the shelter’s instructions.
  3. Add the retreat. Put the open carrier, box, or bed with its blanket in a quiet corner. The cat should be able to hide without being blocked in.
  4. Install the scratching surface. Make sure the post or pad is stable before the cat investigates it.
  5. Remove hazards and close the boundary. Check cords, windows, doors, plants, and small objects one more time, then use the door or gate to keep the first area controlled.
  6. Bring the cat in the carrier. Carry the closed carrier directly to the room, set it down, and open it there. Allow the cat to leave at its own pace.

Keep the first interactions calm. Sitting quietly in the room can be less intimidating than reaching into the carrier or repeatedly calling the cat out. Expand access to the rest of the home only after the cat is using its resources reliably and the additional areas have been made safe.

Match purchases to the individual cat

Food and health

A shelter cat may arrive with a known diet, medication, dental issue, weight concern, or other health consideration. Obtain the written instructions the shelter can provide and schedule veterinary care according to the adoption agency’s advice. A veterinarian can assess the cat and recommend food, portions, supplements, or treatment based on its age, activity, and health rather than applying one diet to every cat.

Litter preferences

Some cats have established preferences for a particular litter texture, box style, or location. Start with what the shelter reports, then change one variable at a time if you need to adjust the setup. If a cat stops using the box, investigate medical causes and household conflict as well as product choices; changing litter repeatedly without checking health or access can obscure the problem.

Household layout

The best arrangement depends on your floor plan and the cat’s behavior. A compact home may need carefully separated resources in different corners, while a larger home may support boxes on more than one level. The useful test is whether the cat can reach food, water, rest, scratching material, and an appropriate litter box without passing a threat or becoming trapped.

What is optional, and what should wait?

  • Optional immediately: a purchased cat bed, extra toys, and decorative accessories. A box with a warm blanket or towel can serve as the initial bed.
  • Worth postponing until you know the cat: large quantities of one litter type, an expensive bed the cat may not use, or a full set of toys that may not match its play style.
  • Do not postpone: secure transport, food and water access, a litter setup, scratching material, and a safe area.

Check with the shelter before buying multiples. Some agencies send home food, litter, medication, or a temporary carrier, and their instructions take precedence over a generic shopping list.

Prices and budgeting information

There is no current, comparable first-day starter-kit price established by the cited guidance. ASPCA’s “Cutting Pet Care Costs” page labels its supply table as a 2021 update; those figures are dated estimates, not current prices for every region and should not be treated as a present-day total. Retail prices vary with size, materials, local taxes, and whether the shelter supplies an item. Budget first for safe transport and the basic resources, then add optional comforts after you see what the cat uses.

Common preparation mistakes and fixes

Arriving without a carrier

A loose cat can escape in a parking lot or vehicle, and a shelter may refuse release without secure transport. Bring the carrier to the appointment and keep it closed until you are inside the prepared room.

Changing food and litter at the same time

Two changes make it difficult to tell whether refusal, vomiting, diarrhea, or box avoidance is linked to a product or to stress or illness. Begin with the shelter’s established supplies, then make any change gradually with shelter and veterinary input.

Putting the litter box in a busy corner

A box beside a loud appliance, in a narrow passage, or behind a closed door may be technically present but practically inaccessible. Move it to a calm route the cat can reach safely, and provide the additional boxes recommended by ASPCA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a wobbly scratching post

If the surface moves when touched, the cat may avoid it. Choose a stable item that meets the ASPCA’s rough-material and height guidance, or anchor it so it remains steady.

Opening the entire home immediately

A large unfamiliar space can make it hard for a new cat to locate food, water, or a litter box. Start with the prepared room, maintain a quiet routine, and enlarge the territory as the cat demonstrates comfort and reliable resource use.

A final shopping-and-setup check

  • Secure carrier is present and accepted by the shelter.
  • Familiar food information and a feeding plan are written down.
  • Food dish and water bowl are clean and positioned away from litter.
  • Litter type is confirmed, boxes are accessible, and the household plan follows the one-per-cat-plus-one ASPCA recommendation where feasible.
  • Stable scratching post or pad is installed.
  • Quiet room includes a carrier or box, warm blanket or towel, and safe resting space.
  • Cords, windows, doors, toxic plants, chemicals, and small hazards are secured.
  • Optional toys are ready but not crowding the room.
  • Veterinary contact information and the shelter’s medical instructions are available.

Reliable guidance for the preparation

Use the ASPCA General Cat Care checklist for supplies and scratching guidance, the AVMA Selecting a Cat brochure for household preparation, ASPCA Adoption Tips for the settling-in approach, and ASPCA’s litter-box guidance if elimination problems arise. These sources support preparation principles; your shelter and veterinarian remain the authorities for the individual cat’s transport, diet, medical care, and supplied equipment.
