Stay inside, lock the doors, close the windows and sunroof, and follow the safari park’s instructions. Don’t reach outside, get out to take a photo, or drive toward the lion. Whether you should keep moving depends on the venue’s rules and whether it is safe to do so.
What to do immediately
- Stay inside the vehicle. Keep the doors locked and the windows and sunroof closed. Do not lean out, put any body part outside, or get out to approach or photograph the lion.
- Stay calm and pay attention. Keep your focus on driving conditions and listen to park signs, staff, rangers, or your guide.
- Follow the park’s instructions about moving. Do not assume that you should accelerate, reverse, or move toward the lion.
Should you keep driving if a lion comes near your car?
There is no single movement rule for every safari park or wildlife encounter. Follow the specific directions for the place you are visiting, and move only when it is safe.
When the park tells you to drive on
Some self-drive safari parks explicitly instruct visitors to continue moving when an animal approaches. Knowsley Safari says, “Please drive on if any large animal approaches the vehicle.” African Safari Japan’s 2025 English visitor pamphlet likewise tells visitors not to stop and to keep moving if an animal approaches or seems likely to interfere. These are venue-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every safari.
When you cannot safely proceed
If traffic, the animal’s position, a hazard, or another immediate condition makes it unsafe to move, do not improvise a maneuver toward the lion. Follow posted instructions and contact park staff using the venue’s emergency procedure.

If your vehicle breaks down or there is an emergency
Stay inside with the doors locked and windows closed while you signal for help. Use the method specified by the park: it may be a horn, a guard or patrol contact, or another posted emergency process.
- African Lion Safari says that if a vehicle breaks down in its drive-through Game Reserves, visitors should not get out, should sound the horn, and should wait for a patrol vehicle.
- Knowsley Safari directs visitors who break down or need assistance to stay in the car, sound the horn, and wait for patrol.
- Fuji Safari Park tells visitors to follow ranger instructions and use the horn to attract a ranger for listed emergencies.
- Safari Park Dvůr Králové provides a Lion Safari Guard contact for breakdowns, accidents, or SOS situations.
These procedures differ by venue. Use the contact method and instructions provided by the park you are in rather than relying on another park’s procedure.

Check the rules before entering a safari area
Before you enter, learn the local rules for windows, doors, stopping, and emergencies, and note how to reach staff. Official guidance from African Lion Safari, Fuji Safari Park, Safari Park Dvůr Králové, Knowsley Safari, and Lion & Safari Park all stresses remaining in the vehicle in relevant animal or predator areas; the exact instructions vary.
If you would rather not drive, some venues offer a guided vehicle alternative. African Safari Japan’s 2025 pamphlet suggests its jungle bus for visitors worried about an approaching animal. Fuji Safari Park also describes a jungle bus and ranger-operated navigation cars. Check the venue’s current options and rules directly.
