If the app’s explanation leaves you uneasy, do not book yet: ask what the check covered, meet the actual caregiver, verify relevant experience and references, and put care and emergency arrangements in writing. If the answers or the person still do not give you confidence, choose someone else.
What a pet-care verification badge actually checks
“Verified” has no universal meaning across pet-care apps or countries. It describes a particular platform’s process, and you need to read that platform’s current explanation rather than infer what the badge includes.

For example, Rover’s U.S. background-check guidance, viewed on October 13, 2026, describes two levels:
Recommended Free Tools
| Badge or check | Searches described by Rover | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | U.S. Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website, a national criminal database, and county criminal court records based on address history | This is a description of Rover’s U.S. process, not a global or industry-wide standard. |
| Basic | The national sex-offender website and national criminal database | Rover says this badge is most often found on some older profiles whose sitters joined before January 2022 and have not upgraded. |
Those searches do not automatically establish identity, professional competence, honesty, animal-handling ability, or current conduct. Laws and reporting systems can limit what appears in a search. Court closures, human mistakes, electronic errors, and information supplied by an applicant can also produce an incomplete result. Rover itself describes a criminal check as “only one consideration point when hiring a pet care provider through our platform.”

Other apps may use different searches, vendors, time frames, countries, or terminology. Ask the specific service what “verified” means today, where the search applies, and when it was completed.
Is a verified pet sitter safe?
There is no responsible yes-or-no answer based on a badge alone. A completed check can reduce one type of uncertainty, but it cannot show how a sitter will behave in your home, respond to an anxious dog, administer medication, or handle an emergency.
Rover’s provider-evaluation guidance also describes profile experience details, uploaded photos, testimonials, a background check, and a safety quiz. These give an owner more information to examine, but none is proof that a caregiver is a good match for a particular pet. A sitter with an impressive profile may lack experience with your animal’s medical or behavioral needs; a newer sitter may be an excellent fit but have fewer reviews.
Judge the whole arrangement: the person’s relevant experience, your pet’s reaction, the clarity of the care plan, independent trust signals, insurance where appropriate, and the backup plan if the sitter cannot attend.

What to do when the verification does not reassure you
Use this sequence before handing over keys or confirming payment.
- Read the badge explanation. Open the app’s current safety or screening page. Write down what was searched, the geographic scope, the completion date, and whether the process covers identity, criminal records, references, qualifications, or something else. Treat anything not listed as unverified.
- Ask the sitter directly. Say, “Can you explain what your verification covers and what it does not?” A professional should be able to describe the process without claiming that a badge guarantees safety. Ask whether the person shown in the profile will be the one entering your home and caring for the pet.
- Arrange an in-person meet-and-greet. Meet the actual caregiver before booking whenever practical. Confirm that the person matches the profile, observe their interaction with your pet, and discuss the daily routine in detail. Rover and Pet Sitters International both recommend an introductory meeting; PSI calls it a “meet and greet” or “initial consultation.”
- Test the fit against your pet’s needs. Ask about experience with your pet’s species, age, size, temperament, medications, mobility limits, escape risk, and service type. Request concrete examples rather than general claims such as “I love animals.” If first aid or medication competence matters, ask what training the sitter has completed and when.
- Check reviews, testimonials, and references. Read verified reviews for details that resemble your situation: medication, fearful behavior, multiple pets, long visits, or overnight care. Ask what references are available. Privacy rules may prevent a provider from giving you copies of another client’s screening record or direct contact information, but the provider can still explain its process and point you to public reviews.
- Write down the service and contingencies. Confirm dates, visit length, duties, rates, payment timing, cancellation rules, veterinary consent, emergency contacts, key or alarm-code handling, and who provides backup care. Do not rely on a verbal promise for a medication schedule or emergency authorization.
- Decide without pressure. If the answers are vague, the person refuses a reasonable meeting, the pet reacts poorly, or the plan remains unclear, pause. Contact the platform about a specific concern if useful, or select another provider. You are allowed to decline even when the app shows a completed check.
Questions to ask a dog sitter before booking
Experience and daily care
- How many dogs with my pet’s age, size, breed type, and energy level have you cared for?
- Have you handled leash reactivity, separation distress, resource guarding, escape attempts, or introductions to other animals?
- Can you follow my feeding, walking, crate, enrichment, and medication instructions exactly?
- What does a normal visit look like, and how do you document that it happened?
Training and safety
- What pet-care or pet-first-aid training have you completed?
- What would you do if my dog became injured, ill, lost, or aggressive?
- Will you transport the pet? If so, in what vehicle and with what restraint?
- Will anyone else enter the home or handle the pet?
Availability and backup
- Are you personally providing every visit, and what happens if you are sick, delayed, or unavailable?
- Who is the backup caregiver, and can I approve that person in advance?
- How will you contact me during routine care and an emergency?
Business details
- What are your cancellation, payment, and holiday policies?
- What insurance applies to the service, the pet, and my property?
- Are permits or licenses required for this service where I live?
Use the meet-and-greet to evaluate behavior, not just answers
A conversation can sound reassuring while the practical fit is poor. Let the caregiver approach at your pet’s pace. Look for calm handling, respect for boundaries, willingness to follow your instructions, and attention to the animal’s signals. A sitter who ignores a growl, rushes a fearful cat, or dismisses your medication routine is showing you information that a database search cannot provide.
Walk through the exact handoff: where food and medicines are stored, which doors remain closed, how walks begin and end, and what counts as an emergency. Ask the sitter to repeat the critical instructions in their own words. If your pet has complex needs, arrange a trial visit or shorter booking before committing to a long absence, provided the service and platform allow it.

Independent trust signals and privacy limits
Reviews are most useful when they contain specific, recent observations rather than generic praise. Look for evidence that the provider followed instructions, communicated changes, arrived as scheduled, and handled the same kind of pet care you need. A large review count is not a substitute for relevance.

References can add context, but a legitimate provider may not disclose another client’s private contact details or screening documents. Ask instead for a description of the screening steps, the type of insurance held, and public testimonials you can evaluate yourself. Never pressure a provider to reveal someone else’s personal information.
Put the care plan and emergency arrangements in writing
Pet Sitters International recommends a written agreement, clear onboarding information, secure handling of access details, and documented emergency and backup plans. Your written instructions should cover:
| Area | Details to record |
|---|---|
| Schedule | Dates, arrival windows, visit or walk length, overnight hours, and holiday changes |
| Pet routine | Food amounts, treats, exercise, litter or toilet routine, behavior triggers, and permitted interactions |
| Health | Medication name, dose, timing, administration method, symptoms to watch for, veterinarian, and consent to seek treatment |
| Access | Keys, codes, entry instructions, alarm procedures, cameras, and who may receive access |
| Communication | Update frequency, preferred channel, photo expectations, and emergency contact order |
| Failure plan | Backup caregiver, late or missed-visit procedure, severe-weather plan, and transport arrangements |
| Commercial terms | Price, payment date, cancellation terms, refunds, and any additional charges |
Share only the access information necessary for the job. Use a temporary code where possible, avoid sending keys through unsecured drop-offs, and change codes after the service ends.
Insurance, permits, and qualifications
Ask for proof that the provider’s insurance is designed for the services offered and addresses both pets and property. A policy intended for one type of work may not cover boarding, transport, medication, or damage in your home. Ask what exclusions and limits apply instead of assuming that “insured” means every incident is covered.

Permits and licenses vary by location and by service. Boarding, commercial walking, home-based care, and transport may be regulated differently. Check your local rules and ask the provider which requirements apply. Guidance from Pet Sitters International is professional-selection advice, not a substitute for local legal advice, and no single credential is legally required everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare several caregivers
There is no universal score for a verification badge. Compare providers on the dimensions that matter to this pet and this booking:
| Decision dimension | What to compare | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant experience | Species, age, behavior, medical and mobility needs, and exact service | Has the caregiver handled this situation successfully? |
| Meeting and communication | Pet’s response, caregiver’s handling, punctuality, and clarity | Do both you and the pet appear comfortable? |
| Trust signals | Specific reviews, testimonials, and available references | Do independent accounts match your needs? |
| Written plan | Schedule, duties, fees, access, and cancellation terms | Could another person follow the plan without guessing? |
| Risk management | Insurance, permits, emergency authorization, and backup care | What happens when the expected plan fails? |
| Platform screening | Exact searches, geography, date, and badge level | What does the badge add, and what remains unknown? |
A stronger-looking badge should not outweigh a poor meet-and-greet, irrelevant experience, or an unclear emergency plan.

Rover’s SEC-filed annual report describes limits specific to that company: it says the platform does not verify pet-parent identity or require background checks for pet parents; it may not re-verify a caregiver’s identity or run later checks after the initial screening; and it does not independently verify every provider’s qualifications or suitability. The filing also says screening may rely on information supplied by caregivers and third-party screening providers.

Those disclosures should not be generalized to every app. They do show why you should ask whether a check is one-time or recurring, who is screened, how identity is confirmed, and what the platform actually verifies. Features and policies can change, so consult the specific app’s current terms before relying on them.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The sitter will not meet you or says someone unapproved will perform the service.
- Answers about the badge, identity, experience, insurance, or backup care are evasive or contradictory.
- The sitter pressures you to book immediately, move communication off-platform before details are clear, or bypass a written agreement.
- The caregiver dismisses your pet’s fear, medical needs, instructions, or emergency preferences.
- Reviews are vague, unavailable, or inconsistent with the person’s claims.
- You cannot identify who will enter your home, when they will arrive, or what happens if a visit is missed.
One concern may be resolvable with documentation. Several unresolved concerns are a reason to stop rather than hope the badge will protect you.
When it is reasonable to say no
You do not need proof of misconduct to decline a booking. A mismatch in experience, an uncomfortable pet, unclear identity, weak communication, or an incomplete care plan is enough. Keep your decision focused on fit and risk: can this person safely provide the specified care, and do you understand what will happen if something goes wrong?
If you have already booked and a concern emerges, pause any handoff you can still prevent, preserve the messages and agreed instructions, contact the platform about the specific issue, and arrange alternative care when necessary. Do not let a completed badge override your direct judgment about your pet or your home.
