Keep your distance, move pets and children away if you can do so safely, and call local animal control or a wildlife professional. Do not try to catch, trap, corner, or kill the snake. If a pet may have been bitten, take it to a veterinarian promptly.
What to do first
- Back away and stay calm. Give the snake space. Do not approach for a closer look or a photo, and do not attempt to identify it at close range.
- Separate people and pets. Keep children and animals out of the room or area. Only move them if you can do so without going near or past the snake.
- Call for local help. Contact animal control or the wildlife authority for your area. If they direct you to a qualified wildlife-control provider, follow that local process.
- Wait at a safe distance. If you can still see the snake without approaching, note where it is so you can direct the responder. Do not follow it if it moves out of sight.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises calling animal control to remove a snake found in the home and says not to try to remove or trap it yourself. Local species, legal protections, and responder options vary, so use guidance from the authority responsible for your location.

If you are asking, “I have a snake in my house, what should I do?” the short answer is to create distance, protect people and pets, and make the call. You do not need to identify the snake or solve how it entered before asking for help. A calm, simple account of where it is and what is happening gives the local responder a useful starting point.
Keep pets away without creating another risk
A dog or cat may chase, paw at, or corner a snake, provoking a closer encounter. Keep pets behind a closed door or in another secure area if you can get them there safely. Do not send a pet toward the snake to make it move, and do not reach past the animal to retrieve a pet or belongings. If a pet is already near the snake, prioritize distance and contact local responders for instructions.

If you cannot safely isolate the animal or leave the area, tell the responder where people and pets are and follow their directions. Do not try an improvised barrier or removal method when you do not know the species, the room layout, or what is appropriate where you live.
Think about safe movement before acting. If your pet is in a different room, keep it there rather than bringing it through the snake’s area. If children are nearby, direct them away from the room without asking them to look for the snake or help manage it. Do not put yourself between a pet and the snake if doing so means moving closer. Let the responder know if anyone cannot be moved safely, so they can account for that when advising you.
Should you open a door or window?
There is no universal door strategy. Some regional authorities give specific instructions for helping a snake exit: Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service advises opening doors and windows leading outside when a snake is in a room, while Queensland guidance says to close internal doors and open external doors and windows. These are local instructions, not a general rule for every home or species.

Ask the relevant local authority what to do about doors, windows, and access to the room. Do not approach the snake to open an exit if doing so would bring you closer to it.
These differences are a reason to ask for location-specific directions rather than combine instructions from different places. If you are already at a safe distance, tell the responder which room the snake is in and what doors or windows lead outside. Follow their guidance about whether to close internal doors, open an exterior exit, or leave the room as it is. Do not cross the snake’s path to change the room setup.
What not to do
- Do not handle, trap, corner, or kill it. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service specifically advises people not to touch, chase, or corner snakes. Attempting removal can put you or a pet within striking distance.
- Do not rely on a quick visual guess. Identification and venom risk depend on location and species. A photo is not worth approaching the snake or delaying a call for help.
- Do not move furniture or reach into hiding places. The snake may be difficult to see, and trying to flush it out can bring you close to it.
- Do not assume a do-it-yourself method from another region applies. Some regional guidance describes additional options, but they may not be appropriate for your location, the snake, or the situation indoors.
A snake that is still, partly hidden, or moving away is not an invitation to intervene. Do not poke it with a broom, try to cover it with a container, or use a household item to guide it. The right response can depend on local species and the exact setting, and an improvised attempt can turn a distant sighting into close contact. Keep the area clear and get local instructions instead.
Likewise, do not spend time searching online for a visual rule that promises to distinguish a safe snake from a dangerous one. Appearance and species vary by region, and a general rule may not apply to the snake in your home. If the identity is uncertain, stay back and describe only what you can see from where you are.

What to tell the responder
When you call, give the exact room or area where you last saw the snake, whether people or pets are nearby, and whether it has moved out of sight. Share a description only if you can do so from a safe position; do not approach to improve it. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife recommends keeping visual track from a safe distance, when possible, to help direct a responder.
Ask whom to contact if the first agency does not handle snakes in homes, whether you should keep a particular door closed, and what to do while help is on the way. Availability and procedures vary by locality.
Useful details include whether the snake is indoors, in a garage, or near an exterior doorway; which room it was last seen in; and whether it has gone behind or beneath something. Explain whether a pet may have been close to it or may have been bitten. You do not have to approach, open a cupboard, or move an object to answer these questions. If you are unsure about a detail, say so rather than trying to check.
Not every agency uses the same referral process. If animal control cannot respond, ask which local wildlife authority or qualified wildlife-control provider handles indoor snakes. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife guidance supports contacting an appropriate professional and, only when it can be done safely, maintaining visual awareness from a distance so responders can be directed. Ask what to do while waiting rather than assuming another region’s instructions apply.

Move the pet away from the snake without pursuing it, keep the animal calm, and contact or go to a veterinarian promptly. The CDC advises taking a pet with a suspected snakebite to a veterinarian right away. If you can safely remember the snake’s appearance, that information may help the veterinarian; do not chase it or delay care to get a picture.
The CDC also notes that carrying the pet, when possible, may help slow venom spread. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions, and do not add home treatments that have not been recommended by a veterinary professional.
When you call the clinic, explain that a snakebite is possible and describe what you know about the encounter without delaying transport or care. If you can safely carry the pet, CDC guidance says this may help slow venom spread. Otherwise, keep the pet calm and follow the veterinary team’s directions. Do not return to the room to look for the snake or try to catch it for identification. A clear account of where the encounter happened and what you observed is preferable to taking a risk to obtain a photograph.

After the snake is gone: reduce the chance of another encounter
Once the snake has been removed or the local authority confirms the situation is resolved, focus on what may have attracted it or allowed it inside. Snakes can use shelter and prey around a home, and gaps at the building can provide entry points. Prevention is about reducing those opportunities, not guaranteeing that another snake cannot appear.
Reduce shelter and prey around the property
- Remove clutter and other likely hiding places around the home; keep grass short where appropriate for your property and local conditions.
- Secure food waste and address rodent problems. Reducing rodents and other prey can make the area less attractive to snakes.
- Keep pets indoors when appropriate, or check that outdoor enclosures are suitable for the snake species found locally.
Look at the property as a whole rather than focusing only on the room where the snake appeared. Stored items and clutter can offer hiding places, while food waste or an unresolved rodent issue can support prey animals. Address those conditions where they occur, and choose yard maintenance that fits your local environment. The goal is to reduce cover and food sources, not to assume that one tidy-up will make the property snake-proof.
For pets that spend time outside, consider how they are contained and whether their enclosure is suitable for snakes known in the area. A local wildlife agency can help clarify relevant local risks. Do not let a pet investigate holes, brush, or clutter in an attempt to find or drive out a snake.
Inspect and seal suitable gaps
Check relevant foundation openings, utility penetrations, door gaps, and other possible entry points. Choose durable materials suited to the location and size of the opening. Depending on the building and job, guidance from Michigan DNR and the Government of Alberta includes materials such as hardware cloth or wire mesh; caulk and door sweeps may suit other gaps. A qualified contractor can help if you are unsure how to seal an opening without affecting ventilation, drainage, or building systems.
A barrier outdoors and a seal around a building opening have different jobs. Select materials for the specific opening and conditions rather than treating any mesh or sealant as a universal fix. Do not use prevention materials to try to confine or catch a snake indoors.
For an appropriate gap or physical outdoor barrier, 1/4-inch hardware cloth is one mesh option identified in prevention guidance from Michigan DNR and Alberta. It is not a snake-removal tool, and it is not automatically suitable for every opening. Match the material to the job: a mesh barrier may be relevant outdoors, while a small gap at a door or around a penetration may call for a different treatment, such as a suitable door sweep or caulk. Consider the opening, the building conditions, durability, installation needs, and local suitability before choosing a material. If sealing could interfere with ventilation, drainage, or building systems, ask a qualified contractor rather than blocking the opening indiscriminately.

Inspect relevant openings rather than sealing every visible gap without checking its purpose. Foundation gaps, utility penetrations, and doors may need different solutions. Use durable, properly fitted materials and seek help if you are not sure what a gap does. Prevention is a property-maintenance task after the immediate encounter is resolved; it should never involve trying to block a snake into a room or closing an exit while the animal is still inside.
Do not count on repellents
The Government of Alberta does not recommend commercial or homemade snake repellents, stating that there is no conclusive data supporting their effectiveness. Prioritize reducing prey and shelter and addressing appropriate entry gaps instead.

A product marketed as a repellent should not replace property changes or local advice. The Alberta guidance specifically cautions against relying on either commercial or homemade repellents because effectiveness is not conclusively supported. No repellent can be presented here as a dependable way to remove a snake already indoors or prevent every future encounter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why local guidance matters
Snake species, risks, legal protections, and professional response options differ by region. Agencies may also give different instructions about how to manage a room or create an exit. CDC guidance provides a conservative general response—keep away and call animal control—while regional wildlife authorities can tell you which additional steps are appropriate locally. If you are unsure what kind of snake it is, treat the uncertainty as a reason to maintain distance, not to get closer for identification.
There is no single removal procedure that can be recommended for every home. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service, Queensland’s environment department, Michigan DNR, Alberta, and New Jersey Fish and Wildlife each address snakes in their own settings. Their details are useful within their jurisdictions, but instructions should not be imported as universal techniques. For a homeowner elsewhere, the appropriate first call and any room-management steps depend on local authorities and responder availability.
For example, Michigan DNR discusses allowing a snake in a home or garage to leave in some circumstances, while Florida IFAS provides regional prevention and response information for Florida residential areas. Such local material does not override the general safety advice to avoid handling or trapping a snake indoors. If you find a recommendation online that differs from the local responder’s instructions, ask the responder to clarify what applies to your location and situation.

Should I open a door or window to let the snake out?
That depends on local guidance and the room. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service and Queensland authorities give different exit-related instructions. Ask your local authority what to do, and do not approach the snake to open an exit.
Can I take a photo or get closer to identify the snake?
No. Do not approach for a photo or close identification. If you can describe what you saw from a safe distance, share that with the responder; identification and risk depend on local species.
What should I do if my pet may have been bitten?
Move the pet away without pursuing the snake, keep the animal calm, and contact or go to a veterinarian promptly. CDC guidance notes that carrying the pet, when possible, may help slow venom spread. Do not delay care to get a picture.
Do snake repellents work?
The Government of Alberta does not recommend commercial or homemade snake repellents because there is no conclusive data supporting their effectiveness. Focus instead on reducing shelter and prey and sealing suitable entry gaps.
What can I use to seal gaps after the snake is gone?
The right material depends on the opening and building conditions. Prevention guidance includes hardware cloth or wire mesh for suitable barriers, and caulk or door sweeps for some other gaps. A 1/4-inch hardware-cloth mesh option is identified for appropriate uses, but no material is a universal fix.
The Bottom Line
Keep people and pets at a distance, call the local authority or a qualified wildlife professional, and do not attempt to catch, trap, or kill the snake. If a pet may have been bitten, seek veterinary care promptly. After the incident is resolved, reduce shelter and prey around the home and seal suitable entry gaps with materials appropriate to the building and local conditions.
