If you can’t register your new puppy with a vet straight away, call nearby veterinary practices and ask who is accepting new clients, when they can see the puppy, and how their emergency cover works. If your puppy is ill, injured, in pain, or may have a life-threatening problem, call a veterinary practice promptly—don’t wait for routine registration to be completed.
This is UK guidance. A practice’s capacity, fees, and appointment availability vary locally, so check directly with each practice.
Contact practices now and ask about registration
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) encourages owners to register with a practice as soon as possible rather than waiting until their pet needs urgent treatment. Registration is commonly handled by phone, online, or in person. You can start by calling practices near you and explaining that you have a new puppy.
Ask each practice:
- Are you accepting new clients, and can you register my puppy?
- When can the puppy have an initial check?
- Can you advise by phone while registration is being arranged?
- Who provides emergency and out-of-hours care, and how do I contact them?
A practice may ask for your contact details and basic information about the puppy, such as its breed, age, microchip number, and insurance status. Requirements vary, so ask what to have ready. RCVS guidance on registration and choosing a practice is available at the RCVS website.

If one practice is full, try other routes
Being unable to register with one practice does not mean you have no options. Use the RCVS Find a Vet directory to identify other nearby practices and call them directly. Ask whether they can take your puppy or suggest an appropriate alternative.
- Another local practice: Call alternatives listed by the RCVS and check their current capacity.
- Mobile veterinary service: Ask whether a mobile vet serves your area if getting to a practice is difficult.
- Online veterinary advice: This may help you access professional guidance, but it does not ensure that your puppy can receive an in-person examination when one is needed.
- Charity support: Blue Cross, Dogs Trust, and Cats Protection may be able to help some owners. Eligibility and availability are not guaranteed; check with the organisation directly.
These routes address different needs: a local practice can establish ongoing care and explain emergency arrangements, while mobile or online services may help with access. Confirm what a service can provide before relying on it.

If your puppy is unwell or injured, call promptly
Do not wait for routine registration if your puppy appears ill, is injured or in pain, or may have a life-threatening problem. PDSA advises calling the nearest veterinary practice straightaway in an emergency or life-threatening situation. Explain that your puppy is not registered there and follow the veterinary team’s instructions.
The UK Government’s dog welfare code advises owners to contact a vet promptly if they recognise signs of disease or suspect their dog is in pain, ill, or injured, and to follow veterinary advice. The right next step depends on the puppy’s situation; call a practice rather than trying to diagnose or treat the problem yourself.

Gather the puppy’s records and vaccination history
Ask the breeder, rescue, or previous keeper for the puppy’s signed vaccination record and any health or microchip paperwork, then share these with the vet. If the vaccination history is missing or uncertain, say so rather than assuming the puppy is fully vaccinated.
Blue Cross’s general UK guidance says a puppy’s first vaccination is commonly given at six to nine weeks, followed by a second dose about four weeks later. That is general guidance, not an individual schedule: have the vet review the records and decide what your puppy needs next.

Limit avoidable exposure while you wait for advice
Until a vet advises you otherwise, follow their guidance about walks and contact with other dogs while the vaccination course is incomplete. Blue Cross advises that an unvaccinated puppy should not sit on a waiting-room floor where other dogs may have been. Carry the puppy in, or call the practice to ask whether waiting in the car is appropriate.
