If you find a kitten in the road, stop only where it is safe, and never step into traffic to reach it. If the kitten is in immediate danger and you can safely move it, place it in a protected spot nearby where its mother can still find it. If it appears healthy and is out of danger, watch quietly from a distance before deciding it has been abandoned.
What do I do if I find a kitten in the road?
- Make sure you can stop and approach safely. Pull over only where your vehicle will not create a hazard. Stay alert to traffic and do not enter a lane or ask someone else to do so. If you cannot safely reach the kitten, contact local animal control or other appropriate local emergency assistance.
- Look for immediate danger, illness, or injury. A kitten in a traffic lane or exposed to another direct hazard may need to be moved, but only if you can do so without putting yourself at risk. If it looks sick or hurt, call a veterinarian, rescue, or shelter for guidance.
- If it is safe and appears well, observe from a distance. A mother cat may be nearby, out finding food, or waiting for people to leave. Keep away from the nest and check periodically to see whether she returns.
- Get local help before transporting the kitten. Call a veterinary clinic, rescue, or shelter first to confirm it is open and can accept the kitten. Intake options vary, particularly for very young kittens.
- Once urgent needs are handled, check whether it has an owner. Look for an ID tag, arrange a microchip scan through a veterinary clinic or shelter, and check local found-animal reporting requirements.
Should I pick up a kitten if I don’t see its mom?
Not necessarily. A kitten alone is not proof that it has been abandoned. The mother may be away temporarily or may stay hidden while people are close. If the kitten is not in immediate danger and appears well, watch from a discreet, safe distance rather than hovering over it or taking it away.
Alley Cat Allies advises that “A mother cat is kittens’ best possible caregiver.” Its guidance also says separating kittens younger than eight weeks from their mother is harmful to their wellbeing. If the kitten is healthy and its location is safe, leave it where it is while monitoring for the mother’s return.
When to move a kitten
If the kitten is directly exposed to traffic or another immediate hazard, do not leave it in danger while waiting for its mother. If you can safely reach it, move it only as far as needed to a protected outdoor spot close to where you found it. Keeping it nearby makes it more likely that the mother can locate it. If reaching the kitten would put you at risk, call local animal control or emergency assistance instead.

How can I tell if the kitten needs urgent help?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the kitten appears ill or injured. Signs Alley Cat Allies identifies include:
- A gaunt appearance, cold ears, belly, or paws, or pale gums or tongue
- Lethargy, crusted eyes or nose, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Difficulty breathing
- Limping, visible wounds or sores, or crying out in pain
These signs are reasons to seek professional assessment, not a way to diagnose the kitten yourself. If it is safe to do so, keep the kitten out of immediate danger while you call for guidance.

Who do I call if I find an injured kitten?
Call a local veterinarian, animal rescue, or shelter and describe what you see. The ASPCA recommends calling before taking kittens to a clinic or shelter so you can confirm that the facility is open and able to accept them. If no caregiver can take an apparently orphaned kitten, ask a local rescue, animal-protection group, or veterinarian what to do next; not every shelter has a program for unweaned kittens.
Local services and intake rules differ, so follow the instructions of the organization that can respond in your area. If you cannot safely approach the kitten because of traffic, make that clear when you call.

What should I do after the kitten is safe?
When immediate danger and medical needs are addressed, check for signs of an owner. Look for an ID tag and ask a veterinary clinic or shelter to scan for a microchip. Check local requirements for reporting a found animal or notifying animal control or a shelter; those rules vary by location.
For a kitten that must be transported, use a secure carrier if one is available, but do not approach or move a kitten solely to put it in a carrier. If the kitten needs care, get instructions from a veterinarian or rescue rather than starting feeding or treatment on your own.
