Keep your distance, bring children and pets inside, and call local animal control. Do not feed, touch, corner, trap, move, or test the raccoon. Unusual behavior—including daytime activity, confusion, aggression, circling, lethargy, or an unsteady “drunk-like” walk—can signal illness or injury, but it cannot prove rabies. If anyone may have been bitten or scratched, wash the area with soap and running water for 15 minutes and contact a healthcare provider or public health department promptly for a rabies-exposure assessment.

What to do immediately

  1. Move people and pets away. Bring children indoors. Leash dogs and keep cats inside; do not let a pet investigate the raccoon, its feces, or a carcass.
  2. Give the raccoon an unobstructed route. Stay inside or behind a closed door and do not surround it, block its path, or chase it away.
  3. Do not handle the animal. Never feed, touch, capture, relocate, or attempt to rescue a raccoon that appears sick, injured, dead, or unusually tame.
  4. Call local animal control. Tell the dispatcher where the raccoon is, what behavior you observed, whether it is alive or dead, and whether people or pets had contact with it. Follow the instructions you receive; procedures differ by locality.
  5. Report possible human exposure. If anyone was bitten, scratched, or possibly had saliva contact with broken skin, contact a healthcare provider or local or state health department promptly. Public health officials decide whether rabies prevention is indicated.

Do not wait for the raccoon to “look worse” before seeking advice after a possible exposure. Rabies prevention must begin before symptoms develop, and the decision depends on the actual contact, the animal, and local circumstances.

Which behavior is concerning—and what it does not prove

Wildlife agencies list several signs that can occur with rabies or other serious problems. They are warning signs for distance and reporting, not a homeowner’s diagnosis.

What you might see What it means for you
Unprovoked aggression, attacking, or persistent attempts to approach people Back away and keep everyone indoors; report the behavior to animal control.
Marked lethargy, weakness, or failure to respond normally Do not assume the animal is safe to handle. It may be ill or injured.
Circling, confusion, disorientation, or difficulty navigating Maintain a wide distance and describe the pattern to responders.
A staggering or “drunk-like” gait Treat it as a potential illness or injury; never approach for a closer look.
Unusual vocalizing, daytime activity, or appearing in an exposed place Use caution, but do not label the raccoon rabid from the time of day or location alone.

USDA APHIS identifies aggression, lethargy, circling, confusion, and an unsteady gait among possible rabies signs. Other illnesses, poisoning, trauma, dehydration, or conflict with another animal can also change behavior. Conversely, an animal that looks normal can still carry hazards. Describe what happened rather than trying to classify the disease.

Does a daytime raccoon have rabies?

No—not necessarily. Raccoons are generally more active at night, so daytime activity deserves caution when the animal also appears sick, injured, or disoriented. A healthy raccoon may be out during daylight while feeding, moving between dens, caring for young, or responding to disturbance. Time of day by itself is not a rabies test.

CDC guidance is to avoid animals that appear injured, sick, or dead, especially wildlife normally active at night that is seen during the day. The practical response is the same: distance, secured pets and children, and a call to animal control.

How to report the animal safely

What to tell animal control

  • Your exact address or a safe landmark and where in the yard the raccoon is located.
  • Whether it is alive, injured, trapped, or dead.
  • Specific observations: for example, repeated circling, falling, aggression, or inability to walk normally.
  • Whether the animal entered a house, garage, attic, or basement.
  • Any known contact with a person, dog, cat, or other pet, including approximate time and whether skin was broken.

Observe from indoors if possible. Do not approach to obtain a photograph, open a gate to steer the animal, or place food outside to keep it in one spot. If animal control is unavailable, ask your local or state health department which public wildlife-response route applies. USDA APHIS identifies professional wildlife assistance and USDA Wildlife Services as additional reporting routes in appropriate situations; availability and jurisdiction vary.

If the raccoon is dead

Do not touch, bag, bury, burn, or move the carcass. Keep people and pets away and contact animal control or the health department for collection and testing instructions. Testing decisions are made by authorities; a homeowner cannot determine rabies status by looking at the body.

What to do after a bite, scratch, or uncertain contact

1. Wash immediately

Flush and wash any bite or scratch with soap and running water for 15 minutes. Cleaning is first aid, not a substitute for medical evaluation. Do not wait to see whether the wound appears serious.

2. Contact medical and public health professionals

After washing, promptly call a healthcare provider and your local or state health department. Explain exactly what happened, when it happened, where the animal is now, and whether saliva could have reached broken skin, eyes, mouth, or another mucous membrane. They will assess the need for rabies post-exposure treatment and other wound care.

3. Treat uncertainty as a question for officials

If someone was near the raccoon but is unsure whether skin was broken—for example, a child reports being touched, or a scratch is difficult to see—do not make a private risk judgment. Ask the health department whether the encounter meets its exposure criteria. Do not handle the raccoon in an effort to confirm what happened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Protect pets while you seek advice

Separate a potentially exposed dog or cat from people and other animals without touching saliva or wounds with bare hands. Call your veterinarian and local public health authorities for instructions, including how vaccination status affects the response. Do not release or transport the pet to chase the raccoon.

Why rabies is taken seriously

Raccoons are among the wildlife species that commonly carry rabies in the United States. Rabies is primarily transmitted through bites or scratches and can cause fatal disease once symptoms begin, which is why exposure decisions are made promptly rather than after symptoms appear.

CDC national figures published in 2025 provide context: about 100,000 people in the United States receive rabies vaccination each year after a potential exposure, while fewer than 10 human rabies deaths occur annually. These numbers do not estimate the chance that a particular raccoon is rabid. Your risk depends on the contact, the animal’s circumstances, local epidemiology, and a public health assessment.

Raccoon roundworm is a separate yard hazard

Rabies is not the only reason to keep away from raccoons. Raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) can contaminate soil and objects with feces. CDC notes that infected raccoons rarely show visible symptoms, so behavior cannot tell you whether a raccoon carries it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep children away from raccoon latrines and do not allow them to play in soil or sand contaminated with feces.
  • Cover sandboxes when they are not in use.
  • Do not sweep or handle droppings with bare hands. Ask local animal or environmental authorities for cleanup guidance, especially for a concentrated latrine.
  • Wash hands after outdoor activity and before eating, particularly for children.

Roundworm precautions do not replace the immediate response to a strange-acting animal: create distance and call the appropriate authority.

Prevent repeat visits after the incident

Once responders have dealt with the animal and your local authorities say it is safe to work in the area, reduce the attractants and entry points that bring raccoons close to people.

Access point Practical prevention
Food Keep garbage in tightly closed containers, remove outdoor pet food, clean spilled birdseed, and harvest ripe garden produce promptly.
Denning spaces After confirming no animal is inside, close openings to attics, chimneys, crawl spaces, and basements with durable materials. Never seal an opening while a raccoon or dependent young may be inside.
Children’s play areas Cover sandboxes and inspect play spaces for feces before children use them.
Pet access Feed pets indoors, secure doors and pet flaps at night, and supervise outdoor time.

These measures address future food, shelter, and denning access. They are not instructions for trapping or relocating a raccoon during an active encounter.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to diagnose rabies: appearance and behavior are not laboratory tests.
  • Assuming a daytime animal is automatically rabid: daylight is a caution factor, not proof.
  • Using pets as a test: do not let a dog or cat approach, chase, or corner the raccoon.
  • Attempting a rescue: gloves, towels, cages, and homemade traps can still expose you to bites, scratches, or saliva.
  • Waiting for symptoms: seek exposure advice immediately; rabies prevention is intended before symptoms begin.
  • Moving a carcass: authorities may need to determine whether testing or controlled collection is appropriate.

A quick decision guide

  • No contact, raccoon currently present: stay indoors, secure people and pets, leave its route open, and call animal control.
  • No contact, raccoon has left: keep pets away from the area, report unusual behavior if it was pronounced, and address food or denning attractants later.
  • Possible bite or scratch: wash for 15 minutes, then contact a healthcare provider and health department promptly.
  • Uncertain contact: do not self-assess; describe the event to public health officials.
  • Dead raccoon: keep everyone away and request handling instructions from animal control or the health department.

The safest response is simple: create distance, prevent contact, and let animal-control and public-health professionals decide what happens next.
