Keep people and other animals away, and call your local emergency number, animal control, or wildlife response service now. Tell the dispatcher a snake is actively constricting a pet and follow their instructions. Do not approach, pull, grab, or try to kill an unidentified snake. Once the pet is free and the scene is safe, contact a veterinarian promptly: constriction can cause injury, and a bite may also have occurred.

While the snake is still on your pet

  1. Move people and other animals back. Do not crowd the scene or let anyone try to intervene. A disturbed snake may bite.
  2. Call for trained help. Contact your local emergency number if a person is in immediate danger; otherwise call animal control or the local wildlife response service. Say clearly that a snake is constricting a pet, give your location, and describe any danger to people.
  3. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not approach the snake, try to identify it at close range, or attempt to capture it. There is no universal, validated bystander technique for removing an actively constricting snake from a pet; improvised actions such as pulling coils, striking the snake, using tools, or pouring substances on it could put the pet and people at greater risk.

CDC advice to keep pets away from snakes and walk around them applies to an encounter, not to disentangling a pet during an active attack. It does, however, support giving the snake space rather than approaching it: CDC: Wildlife | Healthy Pets, Healthy People.

After the pet is free and the area is safe

Get veterinary advice promptly

Call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic and explain that the pet was constricted. Report any suspected bite, breathing difficulty, collapse, weakness, bleeding, pain, swelling, or other injury. Snakebite in animals requires prompt veterinary attention, and the pet may need assessment even if you did not see a bite. Merck Veterinary Manual: Snakebites in Animals; Merck Veterinary Manual: Snakebite.

Transport gently

Keep the pet calm and minimize unnecessary movement. If it is safe and practical, carry a small pet in a secure carrier and go directly for veterinary care. Do not delay departure to photograph or identify the snake, and do not try to capture it. CDC advises carrying a pet if possible after a snakebite and taking it to a veterinarian: CDC: Wildlife | Healthy Pets, Healthy People.

Share useful details without approaching the snake

If you can do so from a safe distance without delaying help, note when the incident happened and take a photo for the veterinarian. Do not retrieve a dead snake or attempt to handle a live one. LSU’s veterinary guidance likewise recommends a safe-distance photo only: LSU School of Veterinary Medicine: Protecting pets from snake bites.

Who to call depends on where you are

  • Immediate danger to a person: Call your local emergency number and get people away from the snake.
  • Snake response: Contact local animal control or the relevant wildlife authority or response service. In Singapore, the Animal and Veterinary Service says to call its Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600 for injured, distressed, or trapped snakes. This number is for Singapore only.
  • Pet injury or possible bite: Contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic promptly, wherever you are. Do not wait for a wildlife responder to assess the pet.

Why not to remove or identify the snake yourself?

The guidance available from veterinary, government, and wildlife sources supports scene safety, professional response, and urgent veterinary care; it does not establish a safe, general-purpose physical removal method for a bystander facing an active constriction. Handling or pinning a snake can expose a person to a bite, and trying to kill one is not a safe alternative. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s emergency guide warns of bite risk when pinning a snake behind the neck: AVMA Emergency Preparedness and Response Guide.
