If you find a lion or another animal that could endanger people, do not approach it: move people and pets to safety and call local emergency services or police. For other sick or injured wildlife, keep your distance and contact your local wildlife agency or a licensed rehabilitator for instructions before intervening. The right number and response depend on where you are.
What to do right now
- Stop at a safe distance. Do not approach, corner, touch, feed, capture, move, or try to treat the animal.
- Protect people and pets. If the animal could threaten anyone, move away and get indoors or behind a secure barrier if possible. Keep others away, too.
- Call the appropriate local service. For an immediate threat, call your local emergency number or police and say that a potentially dangerous wild animal is present. Give the precise location. Then contact the relevant wildlife authority or animal control service for further direction.
- Share observations from a safe position. Note the location, the animal’s apparent species, its behavior, visible injuries, and whether it is near people or roads. Take a photo or video only if you can do so without moving closer or delaying the call.
- Follow responders’ instructions. Do not approach to keep the animal in sight, block its route, or try to secure it.
For example, California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife says, “If your wildlife encounter is an emergency, call 9-1-1.” That is California guidance, not a universal number or rule. California Department of Fish and Wildlife: wildlife emergencies and reporting.
If the animal is a lion or another potentially dangerous large animal
Treat a lion, escaped big cat, or other large animal that could threaten people as a public-safety emergency—not as a routine wildlife-rescue call. Stay away and leave capture, restraint, and treatment to trained, authorized responders. Contact local emergency services or police if people may be at risk, and report the animal to the appropriate local wildlife or animal authority. The agency responsible for an escaped captive animal varies by location.
Do not use advice for an encounter with a native mountain lion as a reason to approach or manage an escaped captive lion. California’s mountain-lion advice concerns that specific native species and says not to approach, to give the animal an escape route, and not to run; it does not authorize handling or deterring a captive big cat. California Department of Fish and Wildlife: mountain lions.

If ordinary wildlife appears sick or injured
For wildlife that does not appear to pose an immediate danger to people, keep your distance and call your local wildlife agency, animal control service, or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Describe what you can see and ask what to do next. Do not attempt capture, transport, feeding, or first aid unless a qualified local responder specifically instructs you.
Rules differ by jurisdiction. Florida, for example, says that care beyond immediate transport requires a wildlife rehabilitation permit; Queensland says native wildlife may be kept and cared for only by licensed carers. These are local rules, not universal requirements. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: injured or orphaned wildlife; Queensland Government: caring for wildlife.

If a young animal is alone
Do not assume a young animal is orphaned just because it is by itself. Do not pick it up or take it away. Keep people and pets back, observe only from a safe distance, and ask a local wildlife professional for guidance.
Ontario’s guidance says, “Do not approach or try to capture a wild animal without first talking to a wildlife custodian.” Government of Ontario: wildlife rehabilitation.

Who to call depends on where you are
There is no single wildlife hotline or response procedure that applies everywhere. Start with local emergency services if people may be in immediate danger; otherwise contact the wildlife authority, animal control agency, or licensed rehabilitator responsible for your area. Use official local government or agency information to confirm the right contact and any current hours.
- British Columbia: the province directs suspected dangerous-wildlife reports to the Conservation Officer Service’s 24/7 RAPP line and says not to handle the animal. Government of British Columbia: report a wildlife conflict.
- California: the Department of Fish and Wildlife directs people to call 9-1-1 for a wildlife emergency. For ordinary sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife, it recommends contacting a local rehabilitator or facility; it notes many rehabilitators are not on call and most do not capture or transport wildlife. California Department of Fish and Wildlife: wildlife emergencies and reporting.
- Florida: the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends contacting a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in many cases and prioritizes incidents involving human health and safety. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: injured or orphaned wildlife.
- Queensland: the state directs people to 1300 ANIMAL for advice on sick, injured, or orphaned native wildlife, with after-hours referral arrangements. Queensland Government: caring for wildlife.
- England and Wales: GOV.UK identifies the RSPCA for reports of injured pets and wild animals, and lists different organizations for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Check that page for current contacts. GOV.UK: report animal cruelty.
- Scotland: guidance for escaped dangerous wild animals says to report the animal to the local authority or police. GOV.UK: dangerous wild animals.
Do not assume an agency or rehabilitator will come to collect the animal. Some services prioritize incidents that threaten human safety, and transport arrangements vary. Confirm the local response route by phone rather than trying to move the animal yourself.
