If you find a rat or another small animal that may have been abandoned, keep children and pets away, avoid chasing or handling it if it seems frightened or unsafe to reach, and contact a local animal-control agency, domestic animal shelter, or veterinarian for guidance. First determine whether it is likely a domestic pet or wildlife: pet rodents need domestic-animal care, while wildlife should go to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. If you can contain the animal safely, use a secure carrier or box and arrange help promptly.

What should you do first if you find a pet rat or small animal outside?

  1. Keep people and pets back. Give the animal space and prevent children, dogs, and cats from approaching. A scared animal may bite or bolt if cornered.
  2. Decide whether it is safe to contain. If the animal is defensive, injured, hard to reach, or you are unsure you can handle it safely, do not chase or corner it. Call local animal control or a shelter and ask what to do.
  3. Contain it only if you can do so safely. Use a secure carrier or sturdy box with ventilation, minimize handling, and keep the container closed and out of reach of children and pets. Covering a carrier can help reduce stress, but do not obstruct airflow.
  4. Contact the right local service. For a likely pet rat or other domestic small animal, call animal control, a domestic animal shelter, or a veterinarian and verify they accept that species. For wildlife, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
  5. Ask for species-specific interim care. Small animals can have different food and temperature needs. Do not assume one animal’s care instructions apply to another, and do not delay contacting a professional to buy supplies.

Is it a domestic pet or wildlife?

Try to identify the animal from a safe distance before deciding where it should go. A rat, hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, or other familiar companion animal in an unusual place may be lost or abandoned, but appearance alone may not settle the question. Local services can help identify the animal and route it appropriately.

Situation Who to contact Key point
Likely domestic pet, such as a pet rat Local animal control, a domestic animal shelter, or a veterinarian Call first to confirm the organization accepts that species.
Likely wildlife A licensed wildlife rehabilitator Wildlife-care guidance is not automatically appropriate for domestic pets.
Unclear species or uncertain destination Local animal control or a shelter Ask for identification and the correct local intake route before transporting it.

Houston Humane Society distinguishes domestic rodents from wildlife: pet rodents belong with a veterinarian or domestic shelter, not a wildlife center. Its advice about not feeding a rescued animal and keeping it warm, dark, and quiet is given for wildlife rescue; do not apply it automatically to pet rats or other domestic animals. Ask the appropriate local professional what to do while you wait.

Where can you take an abandoned pet rat or other small animal?

Start with your local animal-control agency, a domestic animal shelter, or a veterinarian. Small-animal intake varies: a humane society may not accept rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, or rabbits, and some organizations may direct you elsewhere. Call before making a trip and describe the species, condition, and whether it is contained.

If the animal appears to be wildlife, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than taking it to a domestic-pet shelter. When the animal is visibly injured, extremely weak, or having trouble breathing, tell the service that it may need urgent veterinary attention and follow its directions for safe transport. If you cannot safely reach or contain it, do not attempt a rescue that could injure you or the animal; request help from animal control.

How do you look for the owner?

Once the animal is safe and you have contacted the appropriate service, check for identification and report it as found through local channels. Procedures differ by location, so follow your municipality’s instructions rather than relying on a universal holding period or assuming that one service handles every species.

  • Ask a veterinarian, shelter, or animal-control agency whether identification can be checked. Some agencies can scan pets for a microchip, but do not assume every small rodent has one.
  • Check local lost-pet listings and community found-pet channels, and submit a found report where your local service recommends.
  • Record where and when you found the animal and provide a clear description to the agency or shelter.
  • Follow local intake, reporting, and owner-reunification rules. Nashville’s found-pet guidance, for example, describes procedures for that municipality; it does not establish the process elsewhere.

Can you touch a rat you found?

Avoid unnecessary contact. Rodents, including pet rodents, can carry germs even when they look healthy. Exposure can occur through bites or contact with urine, droppings, saliva, bedding, or dust contaminated by those materials. If safe containment is uncertain, call for help instead of picking the animal up.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with the animal or its carrier, bedding, or waste.
  • Cover cuts before any necessary handling, avoid touching your face, and do not kiss or hold a rodent near your face.
  • Use gloves and a suitable mask when cleaning rodent housing or contaminated material; protective gear does not make unsafe handling safe.
  • Do not sweep or vacuum droppings, urine, or nests, which can stir contaminated material into the air. Ask a public-health or veterinary professional for cleanup advice if there is substantial contamination.

If bitten, clean the wound promptly and thoroughly. Seek medical attention if it becomes infected. If you become ill after handling a rodent, tell a clinician about the contact.

What if the animal is injured, aggressive, or hard to contain?

Do not chase, corner, or grab an animal that is frightened, defensive, visibly injured, or difficult to reach. Stress can make escape or a bite more likely, and an attempted capture can worsen an injury. Keep other people and pets away, note where the animal is, and call local animal control or a shelter for instructions. If it is already secured, avoid repeated handling and tell the receiving service what you observed.

How should you care for it while waiting for help?

Keep the animal in a secure, quiet place away from children and household pets, and limit handling. Small animals may be temperature-sensitive and can need prompt, species-specific care. Ask a veterinarian, domestic shelter, animal-control service, or licensed wildlife rehabilitator what to do about food, water, warmth, and transport for this particular animal and its condition. Do not infer a feeding or housing plan from guidance intended for another species or for wildlife.

Guidance for animal facilities handling rats of unknown origin has also been issued in the context of Seoul virus investigations. Illinois Department of Public Health’s 2017 interim document addresses that specific setting and outbreak context; it is not evidence of a current outbreak or a reason to panic about every found rat.
