Keep yourself safe, call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital promptly, and arrange urgent professional assessment. First aid can help support an injured dog while you get help, but it cannot replace veterinary care.
What should I do if I find an injured dog?
Work through these steps in order. Do not enter traffic or another dangerous area to reach the dog; call local emergency services or the relevant animal-control or rescue service if you cannot safely approach.
- Check the scene from a safe distance. Look for traffic, hazards, and signs such as difficulty breathing, bleeding, collapse, or lack of responsiveness. Do not put yourself in danger.
- Call for professional help early. Contact a nearby veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital. Depending on the situation and local practice, an animal centre or animal-control authority may also be appropriate. If another person is present, ask them to call while you help only if it is safe.
- Describe what you can see. Tell the clinic about collapse, breathing changes, injury, bleeding, possible heat exposure, or suspected poison exposure. Follow its instructions and, if possible, call ahead before travelling so the veterinary team can prepare.
- Approach slowly only if it is safe. Keep your face away from the dog’s mouth. Do not hug, crowd, or make sudden movements around it. If you are unsure you can approach without being bitten, wait for trained help.
- Arrange a safe handoff and transport. If the dog is injured and you do not know its owner, contact a local veterinarian or animal centre. The right reporting process depends on where you are; UK dog-warden guidance does not apply everywhere.
What do I do if I find a collapsed dog?
Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Collapse, loss of consciousness, inability to stand, apparent paralysis, breathing changes, pale gums, a weak or rapid pulse, seizures, and excessive bleeding are emergency signs. Do not wait to see whether collapse passes: an unknown dog’s condition and cause cannot be determined safely at the scene.
From a safe position, observe whether the dog appears responsive and is breathing. Tell the clinic exactly what you notice. Do not force the dog to stand or walk, or attempt an examination that could put you at risk.

What if the dog might bite me?
Pain, fear, or confusion can make even a quiet or familiar dog unpredictable. A growl, snap, stiff posture, or other threatening behaviour is a reason to stop and retreat to a safe distance, then call trained help. Do not bring your face close, reach suddenly, or try to restrain the dog.
A muzzle is not a default solution for a collapsed dog. Breathing difficulty, vomiting, or facial injury can make muzzling unsafe, so use one only if a veterinary professional instructs you to.

Can I move an injured dog?
Move the dog only when necessary and safe—for example, if it is in immediate danger or must be transported for urgent care. If a fall, vehicle impact, or other trauma is possible, keep the head, neck, and back aligned and minimize movement. Avoid twisting or jerking the body.
If transport is necessary and you can do it safely, use a firm, flat support such as a board, blanket, or other stretcher-like surface to reduce bending. A ventilated box or carrier may help contain a smaller dog. For a large dog, ask another person to help if available. Call the clinic before setting off when possible, and follow its transport directions.

What first aid can I give while arranging care?
Keep the dog quiet and restrict movement while help is arranged. Attempt only simple measures you can carry out without risking a bite or delaying veterinary care.
External bleeding
If you can safely reach the wound, apply firm, steady pressure with clean cloth or gauze while arranging urgent veterinary care. Do not pull out an object embedded in the wound. If you are unsure how to bandage or splint an injury, do not improvise: a poorly applied bandage or splint can cause further harm.

Possible heatstroke
Heavy panting, noisy breathing, red gums, vomiting, confusion, or seizures can occur with heatstroke. Call a veterinarian, stop further heating, and use water cooler than the dog’s body temperature over its body—not its head. Create airflow and transport the dog in a cool, ventilated vehicle after speaking with the clinic.
Possible poisoning
Call a veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately. If you know what the dog may have eaten or contacted, keep the product or container information available for the professional. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.

Seizure
Do not restrain the dog or put your hands near its mouth. Clear nearby hazards, note how long the episode lasts if you can, and contact a veterinarian.
Unconscious and not breathing
Call emergency veterinary help immediately and follow the professional’s directions. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 First Aid for Your Pet brochure includes airway-check, rescue-breathing, and CPR guidance; use current official instructions rather than attempting an improvised technique, and continue arranging urgent transport.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the dog is not mine?
You may not know the dog’s owner, medical history, or vaccination status. Prioritize your safety and arrange a handoff to a local veterinarian, animal centre, or appropriate animal service; do not assume you must put the dog in your own vehicle. If the dog is in immediate danger or in a dangerous location, contact local emergency services or the relevant animal-control or rescue service. Local reporting rules and emergency numbers vary.
Veterinary and animal-welfare guidance—including the AVMA’s 2025 first-aid brochure, the Merck Veterinary Manual’s transport guidance (last updated December 2025), ASPCA emergency-care guidance, and RSPCA dog first-aid guidance—treat first aid as temporary support, not a substitute for professional assessment. Only a veterinary professional can determine why an unknown dog collapsed or what treatment it needs.
