Keep your distance and report the orangutan to the wildlife authority responsible for the place where you found it. Do not touch, feed, chase, catch, move, or try to treat it. Tell officials where it is and what you can safely observe; do not approach to get a better look or photograph. If people or the animal face immediate danger, move people away and follow local emergency and wildlife authorities’ instructions.
What to do first
- Stop at a safe distance. Do not close in to inspect the animal, take a photograph, or see whether it responds. Give it more space if the situation calls for it, and follow any directions from responders.
- Keep people away. If someone is at immediate risk, prioritize getting people to safety without approaching the orangutan. Follow local emergency instructions.
- Contact the responsible wildlife authority. The right agency depends on the location. Use the regional contacts below where applicable; if you are elsewhere, contact the local wildlife or forestry authority rather than assuming a number serves the whole island or region.
- Describe what you can safely observe. Give the location and a brief account of the animal’s condition from where you are. The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry advises reporting promptly, but its guidance does not set out a mandatory list of details to collect.
- Wait for instructions without intervening. Do not offer food, water, medication, or other care unless a qualified responder specifically tells you to do so.
These precautions apply whether the orangutan appears injured, weak, or alone. A young animal by itself may prompt understandable concern, but trying to capture or carry it is not a safe way to establish whether it is orphaned. Report what you see and let trained responders assess the situation.

Who to call depends on where you are
Orangutans live across several jurisdictions on Borneo, and wildlife agencies are not interchangeable. Check the place where you found the animal before calling. If you are travelling, save the appropriate current contact information offline; connectivity may be limited where you encounter wildlife.

What to tell the authority
Give a clear location that officials can use to find the site, and describe the animal’s condition only from a safe position. Explain whether people are in immediate danger. If you do not know an answer, say so rather than moving closer to check. You do not need to approach, touch the animal, or gather proof before making a report.
Keep the report focused on what you actually observed. For example, you might say that an orangutan appears injured or is alone, then describe what you can see without diagnosing the cause. Avoid presenting a guess as a confirmed injury or orphaning. The Ministry of Forestry’s advice is to report promptly and keep away; it does not prescribe a formal reporting checklist.

If you are with other people, one person can contact the authority while others keep bystanders back, provided they can do so without approaching the animal. Do not create a crowd around it or let anyone attempt a closer photograph. If conditions change while you are waiting, report the change from a safe place and follow the responders’ directions.
Why you should not approach or provide care
Orangutans are powerful wild apes, and close contact can put both people and the animal at risk. Handling, feeding, or disturbing wildlife can also make a difficult situation worse. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry specifically advises the public not to handle wildlife, to keep distance, avoid disturbance and feeding, and report an encounter promptly.

There is no single emergency stand-off measurement established for every encounter. Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation) tells visitors in managed settings to stay at least 10 metres away. That is a visitor rule for those settings, not a universal emergency distance. In a field encounter, follow the ministry’s advice to keep back, give the animal more space if needed, and obey instructions from responders.
Do not try to administer first aid, transport the orangutan, or separate it from a location or situation yourself. Even an action intended to help can require handling and can interfere with a qualified team’s assessment. Leave decisions about capture, veterinary examination, treatment, and any transfer to trained responders.

What happens after you report it
Responders coordinate with local authorities to assess the animal and arrange veterinary care or other next steps as appropriate. In a Ministry of Forestry rescue account published in 2026, a resident’s report was passed to officials and led to a coordinated response involving a wildlife rescue team and veterinary support. Reporting, rather than attempting a rescue alone, is how a local observation can reach the people equipped to act.

BOS Foundation describes veterinary assessment and quarantine, followed by placement in an appropriate rehabilitation stage. Save the Orangutan also describes veterinary examination and care for injuries, malnourishment, or trauma; orphaned animals may need a longer rehabilitation process to learn survival skills. These are decisions for qualified teams, not for the person who finds the animal.

If you are unsure whether the orangutan is injured or orphaned
You do not have to determine what happened before reporting it. “Orphaned” and “injured” can be difficult judgments to make from a brief sighting, and a person on the ground should not try to establish them by approaching, touching, following, or moving the animal. Report the location and the concern that prompted you to call, using cautious language if the condition is uncertain.
Do not wait for certainty if the animal appears to be in trouble. Promptly pass on what you can safely see and allow the relevant authority to decide whether a response is needed. If the animal moves out of view, tell the agency what changed; do not follow it to maintain sight of it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to rescue the animal personally: do not catch, carry, or move it, even if it seems small or weak.
- Offering food or water: the Ministry of Forestry’s public guidance says not to feed or handle wildlife.
- Getting closer for a photo or diagnosis: make your report from a safe position rather than approaching to gather more detail.
- Assuming a number works across borders: choose a contact for the jurisdiction where the animal is located. Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, for example, should not be treated as the same reporting area.
- Assuming a published contact is always an emergency line: the Sabah contact is a department number, not confirmed as a 24-hour hotline in the cited listing; PERHILITAN’s published schedule also needs checking.
- Taking agency decisions into your own hands: veterinary care, transfer, rehabilitation, and release depend on trained assessment.
Keep the contact useful before you travel
If you expect to travel in an area where orangutans may be encountered, identify the relevant wildlife authority before setting out and save its current number offline. Check that the contact applies to your destination and note any published operating hours. This is especially useful where mobile service may be unreliable or the closest agency is not obvious.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor more context on appropriate distance in managed settings and rehabilitation, BOS Foundation publishes visitor and care guidance, while Save the Orangutan describes veterinary care and rehabilitation for rescued animals. Those resources do not replace an emergency report to the authority responsible for the location where you find an orangutan.
