Call the nearest emergency veterinary clinic and arrange immediate transport; if someone is with you, ask them to call ahead while you prepare to move the puppy. Do not wait to see whether the puppy wakes up. First aid is only a bridge to veterinary care.
What to do first
- Make sure the scene is safe. Check for traffic, electrical hazards, nearby animals, or anything else that could put you in danger. Approach calmly: an injured or frightened puppy may bite, even if normally gentle. (VCA; ASPCA)
- Call an emergency veterinarian and leave for the clinic. If another person is available, have them call ahead so the clinic can prepare. Loss of consciousness is an emergency sign; do not delay transport to monitor the puppy at home. (ASPCA; AVMA)
- Check breathing and the mouth briefly. Look for chest movement and listen or feel for airflow. If you see material in the mouth, remove only what is visible and safely reachable. Do not sweep blindly or push an object farther in, and be mindful that an injured animal may bite. (AVMA; VCA)
- Move the puppy as little as possible. If a fall, collision, or other trauma is possible, support the head, neck, and back. Use a firm board, carrier base, or other stable support as a stretcher rather than lifting or twisting the puppy unnecessarily. (ASPCA; VCA)
- Keep the puppy quiet during transport. Do not give food, water, or medication, or apply heat, unless a veterinarian tells you to. Keep the puppy warm only if advised or appropriate; VCA’s general first-aid guidance makes an exception for suspected heat stroke, when warming is not appropriate. (VCA)
If the puppy is not breathing
Tell the clinic or veterinary professional that the puppy is unconscious and not breathing, and follow their live instructions if available. The AVMA’s general pet first-aid brochure describes opening the mouth, gently pulling the tongue forward, checking quickly for a foreign object, and giving breaths into the nose until the chest expands. It specifies 10 rescue breaths per minute until the animal breathes independently or reaches the veterinary hospital. Have another person call or drive if possible so care is not delayed. (AVMA)
Do not treat CPR numbers from different general-dog guides as a single puppy-specific protocol. VCA describes compressions at 100–120 per minute with a 30:2 compression-to-breath ratio in its dog guidance; the AVMA brochure also gives a 100–120-per-minute compression rate for small dogs, alongside its separate rescue-breathing instructions. These sources do not establish a universal CPR protocol for puppies. Prioritize immediate veterinary contact and follow the instructions you receive. (VCA; AVMA)
If trauma or poisoning may be involved
Possible injury
Tell the clinic what happened, if known, and whether the puppy may have fallen, been struck, or suffered another injury. Continue to support the head, neck, and back and minimize movement while transporting the puppy. (ASPCA; VCA)

Possible poisoning
Take the product packaging, or write down the suspected substance, and tell the veterinarian. An unconscious pet should be taken directly to a clinic, according to ASPCA guidance. ASPCA’s U.S. poison-control page lists (888) 426-4435; confirm the current number before relying on it, and use a local poison service outside the United States. (ASPCA Animal Poison Control)
If the puppy wakes up
Go to a veterinarian even if the puppy appears to recover. The cause of unconsciousness may remain serious or unclear, and VCA advises veterinary examination after an emergency. Do not assume that waking up means the danger has passed. (VCA)
