If you suspect a pet reptile was smuggled, keep your distance, avoid confronting or handling anyone or the animal, and report what you observed to the wildlife or environmental authority for your location. If someone is in immediate danger or a crime is happening now, contact local emergency services or police. Suspicion is not proof: authorities determine whether the species, origin, permits, and conduct violate the law.
What to do first
- Stay safe and do not intervene. Keep a safe distance. Do not confront a seller, trespass, attempt a rescue, or arrange a purchase to obtain the reptile. For immediate danger or a crime in progress, use local emergency or police channels. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) advises witnesses to protect themselves and maintain a safe distance.
- Record what you actually observed. Note the date, time, and location; what you saw or heard; any species identification you can make without approaching; and names or descriptions of people, businesses, vehicles, or shipments. Save online listing URLs, seller profiles, messages, documents, and screenshots. Take photos or video only if it is safe and lawful.
- Report it through an official channel. Choose the wildlife, environmental, customs, or police authority that covers the location and suspected conduct. The country-specific examples below are not a complete worldwide directory.
What information to include in a report
Separate firsthand observations from assumptions. For example, describe a reptile being offered for sale and the seller’s stated origin rather than presenting smuggling as established fact. Share details you already have; do not put yourself at risk to collect more.
- Date, time, and exact location, if known.
- What you personally saw or heard, including the species if identifiable without approaching.
- People or business names and descriptions; vehicle details such as a registration number only if safely visible.
- Any known route, shipment, concealment, or transport details.
- For online activity, the full listing URL, seller profile, relevant messages, and screenshots.
- Documents, correspondence, or other evidence already in your possession.
FWS asks for where and when the event occurred, what was witnessed, identifying details, and available photos or video. For suspected online wildlife sales, it recommends supplying the full URL and screenshots. Australia’s environment department also asks for species and people or business details, suspected import or export circumstances, dates, transport or concealment information, and supporting evidence. Recording laws vary; preserve only information you can lawfully and safely collect.
Where to report suspected reptile smuggling
United States
Submit a tip to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service online or call 1-844-FWS-TIPS (1-844-397-8477). FWS works with federal, state, and tribal partners. Depending on where the conduct occurred and the species involved, a state or local wildlife or game authority may also be relevant.

Australia
Report suspected wildlife smuggling to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The National EPA also provides a wildlife-activity reporting route and lists 1800 976 422 for suspected illegal wildlife activity. State and territory rules may matter as well.
United Kingdom
The UK government directs people who suspect smuggling or trafficking to its online report-smuggling service. Border Force handles frontline detection and seizure of CITES-covered items. The relevant rules depend on the species, origin, and circumstances.

Other countries
Contact the national wildlife-trade authority, customs or border agency, environmental enforcement body, or local police, as appropriate. Reporting channels differ by country, and no single number applies everywhere. Find the relevant official government site and check its current instructions.
If the reptile appears injured or in immediate danger
Tell the authority that the animal may need an urgent welfare assessment and ask what to do. You can also seek instructions from animal control, a wildlife authority, or a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. Do not handle, medicate, transport, or release the animal unless an authorized professional directs you to. Possession and release rules can apply to non-native animals; in the UK, for example, some non-native animals require a licence, and requirements vary with origin and applicable regulations.

Why an unusual reptile does not prove smuggling
A reptile’s unusual appearance, high price, or a seller’s failure to show paperwork to a bystander does not by itself establish an offence. Import, possession, and trade rules depend on factors such as the species, source, country of origin and destination, permits, and the conduct involved. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says most reptiles fall outside its Veterinary Services import remit, though other agencies may regulate them. In the UK, import requirements vary according to origin and whether CITES or other rules apply; Australia also has permits and species-specific restrictions. Report verifiable details and leave the legal assessment to the authorities.
