What to Do If You Touch a Bat or Find One in a Room With People or Pets

After possible bat contact, wash bites or scratches, keep people and pets away from the bat, and promptly contact local public health. A clinician or veterinarian can assess the next steps.

If you touched a bat, were bitten or scratched, or cannot rule out contact while you or a child was asleep or unattended, contact your local health department promptly and seek advice from a healthcare professional. Wash any bite or scratch with soap and water and get medical care right away. Keep people and pets away from the bat; call animal control or public health about safe capture and testing, and do not release it before getting their advice. If a pet may have touched the bat, call a veterinarian and share the pet’s vaccination history.

What to do first

  1. Move people and pets away from the bat. Do not touch, corner, or try to pick it up. Keep the room or area separated if you can do so without approaching the animal.
  2. Take care of any wound. If someone was bitten or scratched, wash the area with soap and water and get medical help right away. If bat saliva or brain tissue may have entered an eye, nose, mouth, or open wound, contact a healthcare professional urgently.
  3. Call the right local professionals. Contact your local health department for a human exposure assessment. For a bat in the home, ask animal control or public health about safe capture and rabies testing. If a pet may have been exposed, call a veterinarian and local animal-health or public-health officials.
  4. Keep the bat available for guidance. Do not release it before speaking with public health. A test result may help officials determine whether treatment is needed. If safe capture is not possible, ask local authorities what to do instead.

Do not wait for symptoms or try to determine risk from the bat’s appearance. Rabies is fatal once symptoms begin, but appropriate care before symptoms start can prevent it. A health official familiar with rabies should guide the risk assessment.

How the kind of contact changes the next step

A bat sighting alone is not the same as a confirmed exposure, and not every encounter leads to treatment. The key question is whether a bite, scratch, or other direct contact occurred—or could have occurred without being noticed. Local officials and clinicians weigh the circumstances rather than relying on a single sign.

Situation What to do
Known bite or scratch Wash the wound with soap and water, get medical care right away, and contact the local health department for exposure guidance.
Direct contact, but no obvious wound Contact public health promptly and seek clinical assessment. A bite or scratch can be difficult to notice, so do not rule out exposure yourself.
Bat in a room with someone who was asleep, or a child who was unattended Treat this as possible unrecognized contact. Call the local health department and a healthcare professional promptly, and ask about testing the bat.
Bat seen, with no contact and no plausible opportunity for contact Keep away from the animal and ask local officials for advice if you are unsure. A sighting by itself does not automatically mean a person was exposed.

For an assessment, officials may consider where the encounter happened, the animal species and behavior, what the person or pet was doing, and whether the bat can be tested. Unusual behavior can be a warning sign, but it cannot by itself establish whether a bat has rabies or whether a person needs treatment.

If you touched a bat or were bitten or scratched

Clean the wound and get medical help

Wash a bite or scratch immediately with soap and water, then get medical care right away. Do not dismiss a small mark or assume that the absence of a visible wound settles the question. If saliva or brain material may have reached an eye, nose, mouth, or open wound, contact a healthcare professional urgently even if there is no bite mark.

Report possible direct contact

Call your local health department and explain exactly what happened: when and where contact occurred, whether a bite or scratch was noticed, and whether the bat is still available. Ask where to seek clinical care. CDC’s current clinical guidance says a patient with direct bat contact should be assessed immediately unless a bite or scratch can be definitively ruled out. That assessment should be made with public-health guidance, not by inspecting the bat or trying to diagnose yourself.

Do not handle the animal again to confirm contact or identify its condition. Keep other people and pets away while you get local advice about the bat.

If a bat was in a room with someone sleeping or a child unattended

A sleeping person may not have felt or noticed contact, and a young child left unattended may not be able to explain what happened. CDC has identified both a sleeping person and an unattended child in a room with a bat as examples where unrecognized exposure may be possible. Promptly call the local health department and a healthcare professional; ask whether the bat should be captured and tested.

This does not mean every bat found in a bedroom or other occupied room automatically requires rabies treatment. The important point is that contact may not be possible to rule out just because nobody remembers a bite. Public-health officials use the circumstances and, when available, the bat’s test result to inform the next steps. Do not wait for symptoms while deciding what happened.

If a bat is in your home

Keep clear and call for help first

Keep people and pets away, close off access to the room if you can do so safely, and contact animal control or your local health department. Ask whether a trained person can capture the bat for rabies testing and what to do while you wait. Do not release it before speaking with a public-health expert: testing may affect the exposure assessment for anyone who could have had contact.

Only consider capture if local officials say it is appropriate and it is safe

CDC describes a capture approach using leather work gloves, a container, cardboard with small air holes, and tape. This is not a substitute for trained help, and gloves do not make handling risk-free. If the bat is moving unpredictably, is difficult to reach, or you cannot manage the steps without approaching it closely, do not attempt capture; ask local officials for another option.

If officials advise a safe capture and you can do it without putting yourself or anyone else at risk, follow their directions and avoid direct contact. Do not use bare hands. If the bat escapes, cannot be contained, or is accidentally touched, tell public health and follow their instructions rather than trying to catch it repeatedly.

If your pet may have touched a bat

Call your veterinarian and local public-health or animal-health officials promptly. Tell them when and where the encounter happened, what the pet may have done, and the pet’s rabies vaccination history; have vaccination records available. Do not assume that fur, the lack of a visible wound, or the pet seeming well rules out contact. Keep the pet away from the bat and follow the veterinarian’s directions.

For an up-to-date dog, cat, or ferret exposed to rabies, CDC veterinary guidance calls for an immediate booster, owner supervision, and monitoring for signs for 45 days. This is veterinarian- and official-directed care, not a vaccine to administer yourself. If the pet is overdue, unvaccinated, has a different vaccination history, or is another species, the appropriate response depends on the case and should be set by veterinary and public-health officials.

How human rabies treatment is decided

Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a medical decision made after an exposure assessment. CDC describes human PEP as wound care, human rabies immune globulin, and a four-dose rabies vaccine series. A clinician and public-health officials determine whether it is indicated based on the exposure and other relevant circumstances; this article cannot determine an individual person’s treatment.

The scale of prevention is worth understanding without confusing potential exposures with confirmed rabies. CDC reported that fewer than 10 human rabies cases are reported annually in the United States, while about 100,000 Americans receive PEP each year after a potential rabies exposure. The PEP figure is not a count of confirmed rabies exposures. Both figures are U.S. annual figures reported on CDC’s clinical screening page, updated September 11, 2026.

Why local advice matters

This guidance is U.S.-centered. CDC says bat rabies risk exists in every U.S. state except Hawaii; risks, reporting requirements, capture procedures, and available testing differ elsewhere. Even within the United States, local public-health and animal-control processes vary. Contact the health department where the encounter occurred and use qualified clinicians and veterinarians for care decisions.

CDC’s public-facing bat guidance says: “Avoid touching bats and see a medical professional if you may have had contact with one.” Its clinical screening guidance states: “A health official familiar with rabies should always conduct the risk assessment.” Those principles are useful whether the contact was obvious or uncertain.

After the immediate incident: reduce the chance of another encounter

Once people and pets are safe and officials have addressed the bat, ask about preventing bats from entering the home. CDC recommends sealing access points and describes bat-proofing practices, while cautioning people to follow local rules and avoid trapping young bats. If you are unsure how to exclude bats safely or lawfully, ask local animal control or a qualified wildlife professional for guidance rather than sealing an opening without checking whether bats are inside.
