If your dog develops stomach symptoms after eating hay, remove access to more hay and contact your veterinarian for advice—especially if symptoms are worsening, persistent, or severe. Note what your dog ate, about how much, when it happened, and what symptoms you have seen. Veterinary sources discuss grass and other plant material, but do not establish hay-specific causes, risks, or treatments.

What to do now

  1. Keep your dog away from more hay. If you can, save or photograph the hay and note whether anything else may have been eaten with it.
  2. Record the details. Write down the approximate amount and time, your dog’s symptoms, and whether they are changing. This information can help your veterinarian assess the situation.
  3. Call your veterinarian. Explain that your dog ate hay and now has stomach symptoms. The appropriate advice depends on your dog’s age, size, health history, amount eaten, and symptoms.
  4. Do not induce vomiting or give human medicine. The veterinary guidance available for this situation does not support either as a home treatment.

When to seek veterinary care promptly

Contact a veterinarian promptly for frequent or severe vomiting, repeated vomiting lasting more than 4 to 6 hours, blood, lethargy, or diarrhea accompanied by other concerning symptoms. Unproductive retching—trying to vomit without bringing anything up—or a distended abdomen can signal an emergency, including a possible blockage. The American Kennel Club advises veterinary assessment if a dog may have swallowed something capable of causing an obstruction: vomiting in dogs and dog bloat symptoms.

Watch for possible dehydration

Dry or sticky gums, thick saliva, low energy, panting, and loss of appetite can be signs of dehydration. Ongoing vomiting can make it difficult for a dog to replace lost fluids; more serious dehydration may require veterinary treatment. See the AKC guidance on vomiting in dogs for warning signs.

Is home care appropriate?

A bland diet is mentioned in general veterinary guidance only for a pet that is still in good spirits, is not vomiting, and has no blood in its diarrhea. VCA advises veterinary care if diarrhea lasts more than three days or the pet worsens. This is general upset-stomach guidance, not a hay-ingestion treatment plan; check with your veterinarian before changing your dog’s food: VCA guidance on diarrhea in dogs.

Do not assume that fasting, a particular medication, or a supplement is appropriate. The right next step depends on the individual dog and what symptoms are present.

What is known about hay and stomach upset?

The available veterinary articles address grass or plant eating, not hay specifically. They do not establish how often hay causes illness, a safe or dangerous amount, or a hay-specific remedy. Grass-related findings should not be treated as hay statistics.

For context only, VCA reports that fewer than 25% of dogs vomit after eating grass and says the reasons dogs eat grass are uncertain. Its guidance also notes that stomach discomfort can have medical causes, including reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, or pancreatitis, and recommends veterinary assessment to rule out serious conditions: Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

Another VCA article cautions that excessive grass eating can cause gastrointestinal distress; grass may clump and become stuck, and may expose dogs to pesticides, herbicides, or parasites. Those observations concern grass and do not establish the same risks or likelihood for hay. No hay-specific incidence or threshold is established: Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?
