If your dog barks, lunges, growls, or tries to escape when another dog appears, create distance first. Don’t force a greeting. Note what happened and where, then work on gradual reward-based training when your dog can stay comfortable. A veterinarian should assess aggression, serious anxiety, sudden behavior changes, or any situation where someone may be bitten.
What should you do when another dog appears?
- Make space calmly. Turn away, cross the street, or move behind a visual barrier such as a parked car or tree. Choose a quieter route or wait for the other dog to pass if that gives you room to move safely.
- Don’t test how close your dog can get. If your dog is already barking, lunging, or otherwise distressed, focus on leaving the situation rather than trying to train through it.
- Keep your dog under control without forcing contact. Don’t yank, yell, intimidate, or insist on a greeting. If someone approaches, a short request such as “Please give us space; my dog is in training” can help prevent an encounter.
- Afterward, make a brief note. Record what your dog noticed, how close the other dog was, what happened immediately before the reaction, and whether your dog could recover once there was more space. These observations can help you spot patterns and explain the problem to a veterinarian or behavior professional.
Your dog does not have to greet or be friends with every dog. For now, choose walks and activities that let your dog stay safe and comfortable.
What does a reaction around other dogs mean?
Barking, lunging, growling, or trying to move away describes what a dog does; it does not, by itself, explain why. A dog may react in one setting and be comfortable in another. Fear, frustration, crowding, leash restraint, pain, and the particular situation can all matter. Avoid deciding a dog’s motive from one incident.
Pay attention to the whole situation, including distance, surroundings, and your dog’s body language. Possible signs of discomfort include ears held back, fixed staring, snarling, or attempts to move away. If you see stress rising, increase distance rather than asking your dog to stay closer.

How can you help your dog become more comfortable?
Start at a distance where your dog can cope
Gradual behavior work pairs the sight of another dog with something your dog values, such as a treat. Begin far enough away that your dog notices the other dog but can still remain comfortable and take part in the exercise. At that distance, give the reward when the other dog appears; with repeated, suitable practice, the other dog can begin to predict something positive.
Increase difficulty in small steps
Desensitization means introducing the trigger gradually, at a level that does not provoke the fearful or aggressive response. Start farther away than you think you need to. Move a little closer only while your dog remains relaxed and able to participate. If stress rises, increase distance or end the setup. There is no single distance or pace that works for every dog.

Do not use prolonged, inescapable exposure to make your dog “get used to it.” That approach, often called flooding, can intensify distress rather than teach the dog to feel safe. A qualified professional can tailor the pace and setup to your dog.
Use management alongside training
Quieter routes, less busy times, and visual barriers can reduce preventable close encounters while you work on behavior change. Management helps keep your dog and others safe; avoiding a trigger alone may not change your dog’s emotional response to it. If dog walks are currently too stressful, consider calm sniffing activities, enrichment at home, or quieter outings that meet your dog’s needs without repeated close encounters.

Should you punish growling or use aversive equipment?
No. Don’t punish growling or other warning signals, and don’t rely on intimidation or aversive corrections to stop a reaction. Punishment can worsen fear or aggression, and suppressing a warning signal may make it harder to recognize that a dog is uncomfortable. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for dog training, including behavior problems, and opposes aversive methods.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if your dog is aggressive toward other dogs, has serious anxiety, has bitten, is difficult to manage safely, reacts even at a great distance, or has changed suddenly. Pain or illness can contribute to behavior changes, so a veterinarian can assess your dog’s health and advise on next steps. If you cannot prevent unsafe encounters or someone is in immediate danger, use local emergency and veterinary services.

For some dogs diagnosed with anxiety, hyperreactivity, or frustration intolerance, a veterinary behaviorist may consider medication as one part of a behavior-modification plan. Whether medication is appropriate depends on the individual dog’s medical and behavior profile; a veterinarian should make that assessment. Don’t start, stop, or change medication without veterinary advice.
