Stop your dog from drinking more, offer clean water, and consider what the water looked or smelled like. A lick does not mean your dog will become ill, but suspected harmful-algae exposure or any concerning symptoms warrants prompt veterinary advice. If your dog got wet in suspect water, rinse its coat with clean water and prevent it from grooming until rinsed.
What to do right now
- Stop access to the water. Move your dog away from the puddle, pond, or muddy area and offer clean drinking water.
- Rinse off possible bloom water. If your dog entered water that may have contained a harmful algal bloom, rinse its fur with clean water and keep it from licking its coat before the rinse.
- Call a veterinarian when the exposure is concerning. Contact one promptly if you saw algal scum, foam, unusual discoloration or odor, there is a local bloom warning, or your dog seems unwell. Cornell advises taking a dog to a veterinary hospital immediately after suspected harmful-algae exposure.
- Share useful details. Tell the clinic when and where it happened, what the water looked and smelled like, whether your dog swallowed water or got it on its coat, how much may have been involved, and whether you have noticed symptoms.
Do not induce vomiting or try a home treatment based only on the exposure. Ask a veterinarian what to do; the right response depends on what was in the water.
When a lick may need urgent veterinary care
Suspected harmful algae
Cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, can form harmful blooms. If you suspect your dog drank or entered bloom water, contact a veterinarian promptly; Cornell recommends immediate veterinary hospital care. Avoid water with visible blooms, scum, or foam, or an unusual odor, and check local advisories because conditions vary by waterbody and date. - Loss of energy or appetite
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Stumbling or falling
- Foaming at the mouth or excessive drooling
- Tremors, convulsions, or seizures
These symptoms can have more than one cause, so tell the veterinarian about the water exposure. Do not wait for symptoms if you suspect a harmful bloom.
Possible leptospirosis exposure
Leptospirosis bacteria spread through infected animals’ urine and can contaminate water or soil. Dogs may be exposed through slow-moving or stagnant water. If leptospirosis is suspected, the CDC advises contacting a veterinarian immediately. Signs can vary, and some animals may show none, so a dog appearing well does not by itself rule out infection. In the United States, vaccination is available for dogs, but it does not cover every strain; discuss local risk and vaccination with your veterinarian. What might be in mud or standing water?
Leptospirosis bacteria
Infected animal urine can carry the bacteria into water and soil, where they may survive for weeks to months. Slow-moving or stagnant water is one possible exposure route. A dog licking a puddle is not enough information to diagnose leptospirosis or estimate an individual dog’s chance of illness.
Giardia
Dogs can acquire Giardia by swallowing germs in contaminated water or fecal material. The CDC says Giardia can survive for several months in cold water or soil. That describes persistence in the environment, not the likelihood that one lick will cause infection. People are unlikely to get Giardia from dogs or cats because the types that infect people are usually different; handwashing and cleaning pet items are sensible precautions. Harmful cyanobacteria
A bloom is a separate hazard from germs such as Giardia or leptospirosis: some cyanobacteria produce toxins. Water may be risky when it has visible scum, foam, blooms, unusual color, or odor, but appearance alone cannot establish what a dog encountered. Check local bloom notices and ask a veterinarian about suspected exposure.

- Bring clean drinking water for walks and outings near lakes or rivers; the CDC advises bringing plenty of water for pets.
- Keep your dog away from standing or suspicious water, especially when a bloom is visible or an advisory is in effect.
- Check local waterbody advisories before visiting. Bloom conditions can change by place and date.
- Remove standing water from containers and unused fountains around your home where practical.
A portable dog water bottle can make it easier to offer clean water on outings; it is a prevention convenience, not a treatment after an exposure. CDC’s pet-safety handout also advises bringing water for pets.
