What to Do If Your Dog or Cat Stops Eating

A pet that stops eating may be ill, in pain, or unable to eat comfortably. Here’s what to record, when to call the vet, and what not to try at home.

If your dog or cat has stopped eating, note when it last ate and drank, look for other symptoms, and contact your veterinarian promptly. Appetite loss can signal illness, pain, nausea, or trouble eating—not just fussiness. Cats that refuse food should be discussed with a veterinarian; there is no single safe waiting period that applies to every pet.

What to do first

  1. Record what has changed. Note when your pet last ate, how much it has eaten, whether it is drinking, and whether anyone may have fed it treats or another meal.
  2. Watch how your pet approaches food. Does it seem interested but struggle to pick up, chew, or swallow? That can point to a physical problem rather than reduced hunger.
  3. Look for other signs. Tell the clinic about vomiting, lethargy, weight change, apparent pain, or difficulty breathing, as well as any recent changes to medication or surroundings.
  4. Call your veterinarian promptly. Explain what you observed and ask how soon your pet should be examined. A new appetite change merits attention, and accompanying symptoms can make the situation more urgent.

Keep fresh water available while you arrange veterinary advice. Do not give human medication or supplements, or try to force food into your pet’s mouth.

When should you call the vet?

If your cat won’t eat

Contact a veterinarian when a cat refuses food rather than waiting for a fixed number of hours. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes appetite loss as a broad clinical sign and recommends veterinary consultation and an appropriate workup. As Dr. Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, puts it: “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.” Cornell’s guidance on feline anorexia explains why an examination may be needed. Cats refusing food and losing weight should be examined; Cornell’s feeding guidance, updated April 30, 2026, also discusses monitoring a cat’s food intake and condition.

If your dog stopped eating

Call your veterinarian promptly, particularly if your dog has other symptoms or health concerns. A veterinarian-reviewed PetMD guide, updated August 12, 2026, advises evaluation as soon as possible when a dog refuses food alongside vomiting, lethargy, or trouble breathing. It also says a dog refusing food for more than 24–48 hours should be evaluated; that is not a universal waiting period. Symptoms or individual health factors may warrant calling sooner.

Why a pet may stop eating

Loss of appetite is a sign, not a diagnosis. Potential causes include illness, pain, oral disease, nausea, medication effects, and stress or environmental change. A veterinarian will use your pet’s history and examination to decide whether tests are needed; one symptom alone cannot establish the cause.

When a dog wants food but struggles to eat

Veterinarians distinguish a lack of appetite from “pseudo-anorexia,” when a dog wants to eat but cannot pick up, chew, or swallow normally. Mouth or throat inflammation, pain, nausea, systemic disease, medication effects, and other problems may interfere with eating. VCA Animal Hospitals’ veterinary-authored article on anorexia in dogs notes: “The first, most important step is to determine whether the dog has true or pseudo-anorexia.” Difficulty eating despite interest deserves veterinary attention too.

When stress may be involved

A move, a new baby or pet, an absent family member, or the loss of a companion can contribute to appetite loss or listlessness. But stress should not be assumed to be the explanation: VCA’s guidance on decreased appetite with listlessness says medical causes are more common among pets with both signs.

What you can try while arranging advice

Ask your veterinarian whether a palatability adjustment is appropriate for your pet’s normal diet and medical needs. A canned formulation or gently warmed food may help make food more appealing, but neither identifies nor treats the underlying cause. If warming food in a microwave, stir it thoroughly and check for hot spots before serving.
