Take the torn toy away, work out what is missing, and contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog may have swallowed stuffing, fabric, a squeaker, thread, ribbon, or another piece. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional tells you to; breathing trouble, collapse, unconsciousness, seizures, or another life-threatening sign requires an emergency veterinary hospital immediately.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Secure the toy and loose pieces. Calmly remove the toy so your dog cannot swallow more material. Pick up stuffing, fabric, plastic, squeaker parts, thread, and ribbon from the floor. Keep the damaged toy and any recovered pieces in a bag or container; a photograph can also help a veterinarian understand what may be missing.
- Check your dog’s breathing and alertness. If your dog is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, is unconscious, is having seizures, or appears to be in immediate danger, leave for an emergency veterinary hospital while someone calls ahead. Do not spend time trying to identify every missing piece before getting lifesaving care.
- Compare the toy with its original construction. Look for an absent squeaker, plastic insert, eyes, nose, thread, ribbon, fabric panel, or a large quantity of stuffing. Note whether a long strip, cord, or loop is missing. Tell the veterinarian exactly what you found, even if you did not see your dog swallow it.
- Call a veterinarian promptly when ingestion is possible. Contact your regular clinic, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control service for instructions. A dog can look normal immediately after swallowing a foreign object, so waiting for symptoms is not a reliable safety test.
- Do not make the dog vomit. Do not use salt, oil, milk, peroxide, bread, laxatives, or another home “antidote” unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you. Bringing an object back up can cause additional injury, and some materials are more dangerous on the way out.
- Follow the clinician’s monitoring or transport plan. Keep your dog quiet, prevent access to more toys, and take the damaged toy or photographs to the appointment. Do not offer medication or a special diet unless the veterinary team recommends it.
Why a stuffed-toy tear can become a medical emergency
Stuffing is soft, but it is still a foreign material when swallowed. Fabric, plastic, rubber, a squeaker, or a clump of filling can remain in the stomach or move into the intestine. Some objects pass without incident; others lodge and obstruct the digestive tract. An obstruction can compromise blood flow to the stomach or intestine and may be life-threatening. As VCA Animal Hospitals explains in its 2024 discussion of foreign-body ingestion, “Time is critical, since an intestinal or stomach obstruction often compromises the blood supply to these vital tissues.”

The risk cannot be judged from the toy’s appearance alone. Outcome depends on the object’s location, size, shape, how long it has been present, and the dog’s health. A small amount of fluffy filling is not automatically harmless, and a quiet dog is not proof that everything will pass safely.

- Stuffing or fabric: A wad can collect in the stomach or intestine. The amount swallowed and the dog’s size matter, but only a veterinarian can assess the individual risk.
- Squeaker or plastic insert: A rigid or irregular component may lodge or irritate the digestive tract. Tell the clinic its approximate size and material if you can identify it.
- Thread, ribbon, or long strips: Linear material can catch at one point while the intestine keeps moving. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine warns that string or ribbon can cause more severe injury, including intestinal perforation. Never pull a visible strand from the mouth or anus; report it to the veterinary team instead.
- Eyes, noses, beads, or other small parts: These may be swallowed whole and can still become foreign bodies, particularly in a small dog.

| Sign | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Vomiting or repeated retching | Can occur when material irritates or blocks the stomach or intestine. | Contact a veterinarian promptly; emergency care is appropriate if vomiting is severe, persistent, or accompanied by weakness. |
| Abdominal tenderness, pain, or a marked change in posture | May indicate irritation or an obstruction. | Do not press the abdomen or give pain medicine at home; seek veterinary guidance. |
| Reduced appetite or refusing food | Loss of interest in food is a common sign of gastrointestinal illness after foreign-body ingestion. | Call the clinic, especially when paired with vomiting, pain, or lethargy. |
| Lethargy or unusual behavior | A dog may become unusually quiet, restless, withdrawn, or unable to settle. | Report the change rather than assuming the dog is simply tired. |
| Diarrhea | Loose stool can accompany gastrointestinal irritation and does not prove that the object has passed. | Ask a veterinarian what monitoring is appropriate. |
| Straining or producing only small amounts of stool | Can occur with intestinal irritation or obstruction. | Arrange prompt veterinary assessment. |
Do not wait for a full set of symptoms. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) advises seeking veterinary guidance after a potentially hazardous ingestion even when signs are mild or absent.
When to use an emergency hospital versus your regular clinic
Go immediately for life-threatening signs
Breathing difficulty, collapse, unconsciousness, seizures, or another rapidly worsening, life-threatening condition takes priority over a phone discussion about the toy. Transport the dog to an emergency veterinary hospital and call ahead if possible. Bring the toy and any recovered components, but do not delay departure to search the house.
Call promptly for a possible swallowed component
If your dog may have swallowed any stuffing, fabric, squeaker, plastic, thread, or ribbon but is currently stable, telephone a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. The clinician may decide that the dog needs immediate examination, observation, or another intervention. Explain the dog’s age and size, the time of the incident, the estimated missing material, and any symptoms.

Monitor only after a professional says it is reasonable
If every component appears accounted for and a veterinary professional agrees that home observation is suitable, keep the dog away from the damaged toy and watch for the warning signs above. Ask exactly what changes should trigger a return call and how long monitoring should continue. Do not substitute an internet checklist for that individualized plan.
Information to collect before you call
A clear description helps the veterinary team triage the situation. Have these details ready:
- Your dog’s approximate weight, age, breed, and relevant medical conditions.
- When the toy was last intact and when the damage was discovered.
- Whether you witnessed chewing or swallowing, and how much time has passed.
- Which parts are missing, including the dimensions or shape of a squeaker, plastic piece, or other insert.
- Whether thread, ribbon, cord, or a long strip is absent.
- Any vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, appetite change, lethargy, straining, or unusual behavior.
- Photos of the toy before and after the tear, if available, plus the actual toy and loose pieces.
Do not conceal uncertainty. Saying “I cannot tell whether the squeaker is missing” gives the clinician a useful risk question to resolve; claiming that the dog definitely did not swallow it when you did not see the event can lead to false reassurance.

Who can advise you during a pet emergency
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises contacting a veterinarian, emergency animal hospital, or animal poison-control center when a pet emergency requires professional guidance. Poison-control services can help with certain exposures, but a suspected toy obstruction still requires veterinary assessment.
Pet Poison Helpline’s current service page lists 855-764-7661 and an $89 fee per incident. Telephone numbers and fees can change, so verify the current details on the service’s own page before relying on them. Do not delay emergency hospital care while trying to reach a helpline.
What treatment decisions may involve
The veterinary team will weigh the object’s material, size, shape, location, the time since ingestion, and your dog’s overall condition. Some foreign objects pass uneventfully under professional monitoring; others require urgent treatment, and a confirmed obstruction may require surgery. The appropriate choice cannot be made safely from the amount of visible stuffing or from the dog’s behavior alone.

Tell the clinician if the missing material includes string or ribbon. Linear foreign material can inflict more serious damage, including perforation, so that detail changes the urgency of the assessment. Never attempt to retrieve a deep or embedded object yourself.

Match the toy to the dog
Choose a chew or play toy suited to your dog’s size and chewing habits. A toy should not be so small that it can be swallowed whole, and it should not contain easily detachable parts for a dog that routinely removes them. No toy should be described as indestructible: determined chewing can damage any product.

Supervise dogs that rip and dissect toys
San Francisco SPCA guidance specifically recommends monitoring dogs that like to pull stuffing from toys, then picking up and discarding loose filling. Supervision lets you remove a toy at the first split seam rather than discovering a pile of missing material later.

Inspect and retire toys regularly
- Check seams, fabric panels, fasteners, squeakers, eyes, noses, and cords before each play session.
- Remove a toy as soon as stuffing or an internal component is exposed.
- Discard loose filling and torn fragments; do not leave them in a crate, yard, or bedding area.
- Rotate intact toys so one damaged item is not repeatedly offered.
- Ask your veterinarian for safer alternatives if your dog repeatedly consumes pieces rather than merely chewing.
The ASPCA recommends selecting chew products appropriate to an animal’s size and chewing habits, supervising chewing, and consulting a veterinarian if the animal consumes a chunk. A replacement dog toy can be useful only when its construction, size, and supervision fit the individual dog.
Common situations and the safest response
“The toy is torn, but all the stuffing seems to be there.”
Remove it anyway, inspect the floor and the dog’s mouth area without forcing anything, and compare every component with the original toy. If you cannot account for a squeaker, fabric section, thread, or other part, call a veterinarian.
“My dog swallowed the squeaker and seems fine.”
Call promptly even without symptoms. A rigid component can remain in the stomach or intestine, and the absence of immediate vomiting does not establish that it will pass.
“There is a strand hanging from my dog.”
Do not pull it. Keep the dog from chewing more material and contact a veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately, explaining that a linear object may be involved.
“My dog vomited once after chewing the toy.”
Save any material you can safely identify, note the time and appearance, and call a veterinarian. One episode does not prove that the object came out or that no obstruction remains.
“The dog has no symptoms several hours later.”
Continue with the professional advice you received rather than assuming the risk has ended. Some foreign bodies cause problems only after moving farther through the digestive tract.
