Give your newly adopted pet a quiet, secure place to retreat, keep food and other essentials within easy reach, and let them approach when they feel ready. Don’t pull an animal from hiding or force introductions. Some nervousness is common during a move, but monitor eating, drinking, toileting, and other signs of illness—and contact a veterinarian if you are concerned.

Why a newly adopted pet may hide

A new home brings unfamiliar sounds, smells, people, and sometimes other animals. A pet may respond by staying out of sight or keeping their distance. Each animal adjusts at a different pace; there is no reliable deadline by which every newly adopted pet should feel settled.

The ASPCA describes adjustment in terms of the first days, weeks, and months. Its 3-day/3-week/3-month framework is a general orientation, not a promise, a clinical threshold, or a rule that every pet follows. Cat-specific guidance likewise notes that cats differ in how quickly they become comfortable.

Set up a quiet, safe retreat

Start with a low-traffic room or secured area where your pet can rest without being disturbed. Keep essentials close enough that the animal does not have to cross a busy space or pass other pets to reach them. Prevent access to dangerous or inaccessible cavities, but preserve an appropriate hiding place.

  • For a cat: Make food, water, and a litter box accessible. A box, closet, or other safe spot may serve as a hiding place.
  • For a dog: Provide a calm area or bed with room to retreat. Use a crate only if the dog is already comfortable treating it as a safe place.
  • For other pets: Use a quiet, species-appropriate enclosure or area and ask a veterinarian or knowledgeable adoption organization about setup needs.

A covered bed or hideaway can be convenient, but it is not required; a cat may choose a simple box. The important part is that the retreat is safe and the pet can use it without being cornered.

Let your pet decide when to approach

Keep early interactions small and predictable. Move calmly, avoid looming over or crowding the animal, and give them time to observe. You can sit nearby at a comfortable distance and speak softly. Offer food or treats if the pet is willing to take them, but do not use food to lure them somewhere they cannot retreat from.

The ASPCA’s Adoption Tips guidance says, “Don’t force interactions with people or other pets.” In practice, do not drag a pet out of hiding, insist on handling, or invite a crowd to greet them. Let the animal choose whether and when to come closer.

Keep routines steady and expand access gradually

Keep feeding and care routines consistent. Allow your pet to show readiness before giving them access to more of the home or increasing contact with household members. If you have resident pets, begin with separation and use a gradual, controlled introduction suited to the species pairing. Keep the new pet’s retreat available throughout. There is no single introduction protocol that fits every combination of animals.

For a fearful dog, always leave a clear way to retreat. Avoid cornering, grabbing, or pushing the dog toward a person or frightening stimulus. A dog that feels trapped may defend itself; growling, snapping, or biting calls for distance and qualified help, not forced contact.

Monitor welfare, not just whether your pet comes out

A pet may remain hidden while still eating, drinking, and using the appropriate toilet area, so check the basics rather than relying only on visibility. For a cat, check whether food is disappearing and the litter box is being used. Ask a veterinarian if the cat goes too long without eating. Vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy are reasons to seek veterinary advice.

Arrange a veterinary appointment after adoption to establish care. Contact the clinic sooner about acute or concerning changes in health, appetite, or toileting. For dogs and other species, a veterinarian can advise on a change that worries you and help distinguish adjustment from a health problem.

When to seek professional help

Call a veterinarian if fear is intense, worsening, prolonged without improvement, or affecting basic welfare. A qualified behavior professional may also be appropriate, especially if the behavior creates a risk to people or other animals. If a dog growls, snaps, or bites, keep distance and seek qualified guidance rather than testing the dog’s limits.

Do not give medication or calming supplements for behavior concerns without veterinary advice. A veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist can help determine whether any treatment is appropriate.

How the advice differs by species

Cats

Hiding after a move is common. Provide an acclimation room, accessible essentials, and a safe hiding place; sit quietly and let the cat choose when to emerge. Do not pull the cat out. Keep an eye on food intake and litter use, and contact a veterinarian if the cat is eating poorly or appears ill.

Dogs

Give a frightened dog space and an unobstructed route away from what worries them. Do not force greetings or approach, and avoid cornering or crowding. If the dog shows aggression, prioritize distance and get qualified help.

Other pets

The available guidance is more detailed for cats and dogs than for other species. A quiet, secure area and non-forced handling are sensible starting points, but housing, diet, and signs of distress vary. Ask a veterinarian or an experienced, reputable rescue or adoption organization for species-specific guidance.
