Visible breathing distress is an emergency. If your older dog is struggling to draw breath, breathing with pronounced abdominal effort, holding the head and neck outstretched, showing blue or gray gums, becoming weak, or collapsing, call the nearest emergency animal hospital and leave promptly. Keep the car cool, keep your dog as calm as possible, and call ahead for instructions.

A cough, wheeze, or faster breathing without obvious distress still needs veterinary assessment, especially in an older dog. These signs can arise from the airways, lungs, infections, tracheal collapse, tumors, or heart disease. Age, breed, cough sound, or a breathing-rate count cannot identify the cause at home.

First decide whether this is an emergency

Look at breathing effort and your dog’s behavior, not just the number of breaths. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists these possible signs of respiratory distress:

  • Rapid breathing, often with the mouth open
  • Blue, gray, dark-pink, or dusky gums or muzzle
  • Pronounced movement of the abdomen with each breath
  • Head and neck extended to get air
  • Wheezing or noticeably increased breathing sounds
  • Weakness, inability to stand, or collapse

Dogs in severe compromise may stand with their elbows held away from the body, their back arched, and their head and neck extended. This posture, called orthopnea, is a distress sign rather than a diagnosis.

Go now, rather than monitoring at home

Call the nearest emergency animal hospital and say that your dog is having breathing difficulty. Follow the clinic’s directions and go without delaying to try home remedies. If you are unsure whether the breathing is truly distressed, seek help; uncertainty is not a reason to wait when a dog may be oxygen-deprived.

Safe transport

  1. Keep the dog quiet and minimize handling. Excitement and struggling increase oxygen demand.
  2. Cool the car and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and other inhaled irritants.
  3. If your dog is weak or cannot stand, place them on their stomach with the chin supported by a pillow and the neck extended, as Cornell advises. Do not force a position that worsens breathing.
  4. Call ahead when possible so the hospital can prepare and tell you how to enter.

Do not muzzle a dog that is struggling to breathe, and do not give food, water, cough medicine, sedatives, or leftover prescriptions unless a veterinarian specifically directs you.

How to check breathing when your dog is calm

For a dog that is resting comfortably, you can count breaths to give the veterinarian useful context. One breath is one chest rise and fall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait until your dog is asleep or quietly resting. Do not count during panting, immediately after exercise, in heat, or during excitement or fear.
  2. Watch the chest or flank. Count rises for 30 seconds and multiply by two, or count for a full 60 seconds if the rhythm is irregular.
  3. Write down the number, the time, and what your dog was doing. Note whether the breaths were shallow, noisy, or effortful.

Cornell’s respiratory-distress guidance gives a normal canine resting respiratory rate of 12–30 breaths per minute. The range is a reference for a calm or sleeping dog, not a stand-alone diagnosis and not a reason to delay care when effort or gum color is abnormal. Panting can occur with heat, exertion, excitement, or stress.

A separate Cornell article on heart murmurs states that rates above 35 breaths per minute when a dog is relaxed or asleep signify heart problems and warrant an immediate trip to a veterinarian. That threshold belongs to that specific guidance; it should not be treated as a universal cutoff or used without considering breathing effort, behavior, medications, pain, and other findings.

Why an older dog may be coughing or wheezing

Cough is a nonspecific sign that can originate anywhere from the larynx and windpipe to the lungs. Wheezing, rapid breathing, and other abnormal sounds also have multiple possible explanations. Similar-looking signs can require completely different treatments, so a symptom checklist cannot tell you whether the problem is in the heart or the airways.

Airway irritation or infection

Allergens, dust, smoke, aerosols, or inhaled material can irritate the airway. Viral or bacterial respiratory infections may cause coughing, nasal discharge, fever, tiredness, or reduced appetite; pneumonia can make breathing faster or more effortful. A dog can have an infection without every classic sign.

Tracheal collapse

Tracheal collapse is progressive narrowing of the windpipe as its cartilage rings weaken. It is common in middle-aged and older toy and small-breed dogs. The classic sound is a persistent, harsh, dry “goose-honking” cough. Excitement, activity, heat, humidity, smoke, other inhaled irritants, and pressure on the neck can intensify it.

Severe breathing difficulty, blue gums or tongue, or fainting in a dog with suspected tracheal collapse is an emergency. Even a familiar honking cough needs an examination because heart disease, infection, and other airway disorders can sound similar.

Heart disease and valve disease

Older dogs can develop degenerative valve disease. Possible associated signs include coughing, breathing difficulty, a faster resting breathing rate, weakness, collapse, or reduced exercise tolerance. Heart-related fluid in the lungs can cause rapid or labored breathing, but cough alone does not prove congestive heart failure.

Masses and other lung disease

Lung or airway tumors, chronic inflammatory disease, and other structural problems can cause cough, noisy breathing, or reduced stamina. These conditions cannot be confirmed or excluded from the sound of a cough or from a home breathing count.

Patterns that help a veterinarian—but do not diagnose the cause

Record the pattern rather than trying to label it yourself. The following observations can help the clinic prioritize tests:

What you observe What to record Why it matters
Dry, harsh “goose-honking” cough When it began; episodes per day; triggers such as excitement, heat, humidity, smoke, exercise, or neck pressure May fit tracheal disease, but other disorders can overlap
Cough with fever, nasal discharge, lethargy, or poor appetite Temperature if your veterinarian has shown you how to take it; appetite and energy changes Supports assessment for infection or pneumonia
Rapid breathing while asleep or relaxed Full-minute rate, time measured, posture, and whether effort increased Helps assess a possible heart or lung problem
Breathing difficulty with weakness, fainting, or collapse Exact timing and duration; gum or tongue color Signals potential emergency compromise
Reduced stamina on walks Distance or activity that now triggers stopping, coughing, or recovery time Can occur with cardiac, respiratory, pain, or systemic disease

Do not deliberately exercise your dog to “test” breathing, and do not press on the neck to reproduce a cough.

What the veterinary visit may involve

The veterinarian starts with a history and physical examination. Bring a list of medications and supplements, prior heart or airway diagnoses, vaccination history, recent travel or boarding, possible toxin or foreign-body exposure, and a video of an episode if recording did not delay care.

History and examination

The clinician will assess breathing effort, gum color, heart and lung sounds, temperature, pulse, hydration, and overall strength. They may ask whether the cough is triggered by eating, drinking, pulling on a collar, excitement, or sleep; whether it is productive; and how quickly your dog’s stamina changed.

Possible tests

Testing depends on the findings rather than on age alone. Blood work can look for systemic illness and help assess treatment safety. Chest radiographs can show the heart silhouette and whether fluid is present in the lungs. Echocardiography can characterize valve structure and function. Additional airway or infectious-disease testing may be appropriate in selected cases. These are examples of evaluation, not a universal test panel for every coughing dog.

Emergency hospitals may provide oxygen and stabilization before completing the diagnostic workup. A stable dog may be evaluated through a scheduled appointment, but a worsening breathing pattern should be treated as urgent.

What to do while arranging care for a stable dog

If your dog is comfortable, pink-gummed, alert, and not working hard to breathe, arrange a prompt veterinary appointment and reduce avoidable strain until then.

  • Keep activity gentle and brief. Stop if coughing, wheezing, weakness, or faster breathing appears.
  • Use a cool, well-ventilated environment and avoid smoke, sprays, dust, and intense heat or humidity.
  • Keep a written log of resting respiratory rates and symptoms, measured only when calm or asleep.
  • Prevent pressure on the neck. If a veterinarian has diagnosed tracheal collapse, ask what walking equipment and activity limits are appropriate; Cornell notes that neck pressure can worsen coughing. A harness is not a treatment and should not replace medical care.
  • Give only medicines prescribed for this dog and this episode. Human cough and cold products, decongestants, and another pet’s medication can be dangerous.

If breathing becomes visibly effortful, gums change color, or your dog becomes weak or collapses, stop home monitoring and go to an emergency hospital.

A practical decision guide

Is there visible breathing distress?

Yes: treat it as an emergency, call ahead, keep the dog calm and cool, and travel immediately. No: continue to the next question.

Is the dog coughing but otherwise comfortable?

Arrange a veterinary examination promptly, document triggers and resting rates, and avoid exertion and airway irritants. A persistent cough in an older dog should not be assumed to be “just age” or a minor throat irritation.

Is the resting rate repeatedly high?

Recheck only when the dog is truly asleep or relaxed and record the result. Contact a veterinarian urgently for repeated abnormal readings, especially if the rate is above 35 breaths per minute at rest or sleep, or if effort, weakness, coughing, or reduced stamina is also present. Any visible distress overrides the number and requires emergency care.

Questions to answer before you call

  • When did the cough, wheeze, or rapid breathing begin, and is it getting worse?
  • Does it occur at rest, during sleep, after exercise, with excitement, or after eating or drinking?
  • What was the highest calm or sleeping respiratory rate, and how was it counted?
  • Are the gums normally pink, or have they looked gray, blue, dark pink, or unusually pale?
  • Has there been fainting, weakness, collapse, fever, nasal discharge, vomiting, appetite change, or weight loss?
  • What medications, supplements, preventives, and recent treatments has your dog received?
  • Could your dog have inhaled an irritant or foreign material, or been exposed to smoke, heat, or chemicals?

Answering these questions will not replace an examination, but it can help the veterinary team judge urgency and choose the safest next step.

Telehealth and uncertainty

Some veterinary telehealth services offer phone or video triage when an owner is unsure how urgently to be seen. Use that option only for guidance while your dog is stable and breathing comfortably. It must never delay travel when there is labored or open-mouth breathing, abnormal gum color, pronounced abdominal effort, weakness, or collapse.
