Close doors to other rooms, keep other pets away, and search nearby hiding places carefully. If you find your lizard, choose a safe approach for its species and size; do not chase or grab blindly. After recovery, secure it in its enclosure and wash your hands.
First, contain the search area
Shut doors to other rooms so your lizard has fewer places to go, and keep dogs, cats, and other pets out of the area. RSPCA Australia warns against leaving a loose reptile unattended with another pet, even if they are usually familiar with each other. Keep the lizard away from kitchens, open doors, and windows, which can introduce hazards or create another escape route. RSPCA Australia’s reptile guidance and the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust’s advice both support closing off rooms while dealing with a lizard indoors.
Search close by and move things carefully
Start with small, nearby hiding places: reptiles can shelter under objects or slip into small holes. Check around and beneath furniture and other items without pushing things into gaps or moving them abruptly. The available guidance does not establish a reliable universal search pattern, so focus on places your lizard could physically reach from where it was last seen.
Do not leave the search area open to other rooms while you check. If you cannot locate the lizard, continue to keep other pets away and avoid actions that could frighten it into a less accessible spot.

If you find the lizard, capture it only if you can do so safely
Species, size, and temperament matter; a single handling method is not right for every lizard. The American Humane Association’s 2010 Operational Guide for Animal Care and Control Agencies: Reptile Care recommends covering the lizard’s head, and its body if possible, with a towel if it gets loose outside its housing, then following appropriate handling guidance. A clean, soft household towel may be useful, but do not force an approach if the animal is distressed or you are unsure how to handle it.
If you cannot safely get close, contact a reptile veterinarian or an appropriate local animal service for advice rather than attempting a risky capture.

After recovery: secure the enclosure and check the lizard
Return your lizard to a secure, appropriate enclosure and observe its condition. If it appears injured or unwell, contact a reptile or exotic-animal veterinarian. The right recovery steps depend on the species and circumstances; general guidance cannot establish a safe time missing, exact temperature or humidity needs, or how to treat an injury.
Wash your hands after handling
Wash your hands with soap and water after touching the lizard, its food, or anything in its environment. Reptiles can carry Salmonella even when they look healthy. The CDC’s Reptiles and Amphibians | Healthy Pets, Healthy People, dated January 13, 2026, advises handwashing after contact.

If it may be a wild lizard, do not treat it like an escaped pet
If you are unsure whether the animal is your pet or native wildlife that entered the home, identify it and follow local wildlife guidance. In the UK, the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust advises closing doors to other rooms, opening an outside door, and letting a native lizard leave or gently encouraging it out. That wildlife advice is not a reason to release an escaped pet outdoors; seek location-appropriate help if you cannot identify the animal.
