First confirm its species and arrange an assessment with a veterinarian experienced with reptiles, especially if it seems unwell or is underweight. Some tortoises should not be hibernated in those circumstances; instead, they need suitable indoor accommodation with species-appropriate heating and lighting. The right conditions depend on the tortoise, so there is no single temperature or lighting schedule that is safe to prescribe for an unidentified animal.
Start with the species, not the calendar
Whether hibernation is appropriate depends on what kind of tortoise you have. A tortoise remaining awake is not, by itself, a reason to force the issue or to apply a temperature setting intended for another species. If you do not know the species, get help identifying it from a reptile-experienced veterinarian before making a hibernation decision.

The Royal Veterinary College’s Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital Exotics Service (RVC), in its hibernation guidelines reviewed in December 2024, addresses the case of a tortoise that does not hibernate: it advises keeping the animal warm with supplementary heating until the days are sufficiently warm for it to go outside in daytime. That advice is not a universal temperature prescription. Use the normal recommended range for the identified species, and ask a veterinarian to assess whether your enclosure can provide it.

Arrange a health and body-condition check
Have a reptile-experienced veterinarian assess the tortoise’s health and body condition before you attempt hibernation. The RVC says an underweight tortoise or one suffering from an ailment should not be hibernated. The Tortoise Trust also describes overwintering as appropriate when sickness or low weight makes hibernation too risky. If either concern applies, the decision is not how to make the tortoise hibernate; it is how to keep it safely awake and obtain appropriate veterinary guidance.

If you are unsure, do not improvise
Species, health and body condition all affect the decision. If any of these are uncertain, do not use a generic hibernation plan, an assumed temperature, or advice intended for a different tortoise. Contact a veterinarian experienced with reptiles and explain that the tortoise is staying awake, what you know about its species and condition, and how it is currently housed.
How to overwinter an awake tortoise
Provide suitable indoor accommodation
For a tortoise that remains awake, the RVC advises indoor accommodation with supplementary heating and lighting as for the rest of the year. Maintain the normal recommended conditions for that species; additional room heating may be needed. The precise setup cannot be reduced to one heat value or lighting prescription for all tortoises. Ask your veterinarian to review the animal’s enclosure and the conditions it needs.

Check temperatures more often
Take more frequent readings of the enclosure’s maximum and minimum temperatures than you normally would. The RVC notes that temperatures can fluctuate, so a single reading may not show the range the tortoise experiences. Use the readings to identify whether conditions are staying within the normal recommended range for the species, and seek professional advice if you cannot maintain that range.

Keep feeding and hydration appropriate
The RVC notes that bathing may need to be more frequent to encourage drinking and the passing of urine and faeces. In colder months, feeding little and often may be necessary. Continue a weed-based diet where available. When winter weeds are scarce, the RVC identifies shop-bought greens or plants grown in a greenhouse as alternatives.
These are husbandry points to discuss in the context of the individual tortoise; they do not establish a universal bathing frequency, portion size or feeding schedule. Ask your reptile-experienced veterinarian what is appropriate for your animal and its species.

When to contact a veterinarian promptly
Seek veterinary attention without delay if the tortoise appears ill, according to the RVC. Do not wait for a planned hibernation date to pass or rely on changing heat and lighting as a substitute for an examination when illness is a concern.

The RVC also specifies a particular post-hibernation warning: veterinary attention is needed if a tortoise has not eaten or urinated within seven days after emerging from hibernation. This is a post-emergence threshold, not a general rule for every awake tortoise at any time of year.

A practical decision sequence
- Identify the species. If you are unsure, ask for specialist help before choosing hibernation or overwintering conditions.
- Check health and body condition. Arrange an assessment with a reptile-experienced veterinarian, particularly if the tortoise is underweight, has an ailment or appears unwell.
- Do not hibernate an underweight or ill tortoise. Follow veterinary advice on keeping it awake in suitable indoor accommodation instead.
- Set up species-appropriate conditions. Provide supplementary heating and lighting as for the rest of the year, and maintain the normal recommended range for that species.
- Monitor maximum and minimum temperatures frequently. If you cannot maintain appropriate conditions, contact the veterinarian for help with the setup.
- Discuss feeding and hydration. Ask whether bathing needs to be more frequent and how feeding should be managed during colder months for this animal.
- Escalate illness or post-hibernation concerns. Get veterinary attention without delay if the tortoise appears ill; after hibernation, follow the RVC’s seven-day guidance if it has not eaten or urinated.
What not to do
- Do not force hibernation. An awake tortoise may need to remain awake, particularly if it is underweight or has an ailment.
- Do not copy a temperature or lighting schedule for another species. The appropriate range depends on the tortoise’s identity.
- Do not assume a single temperature reading tells the whole story. Check maximum and minimum readings more frequently because conditions can fluctuate.
- Do not treat equipment changes as a veterinary diagnosis. Heating and lighting support an awake tortoise’s accommodation; they do not establish why it is staying awake or whether it is healthy.
What the guidance does—and does not—establish
The RVC guidance reviewed in December 2024 supports a clear course for an awake tortoise: use indoor accommodation, supplementary heating and lighting appropriate to the species, monitor temperature fluctuations more often, and seek veterinary care for illness. The Tortoise Trust’s overwintering guidance adds that illness or low weight can make hibernation too risky.
Neither source establishes one universal temperature, lighting duration, bathing interval or feeding quantity for every tortoise. Do not infer those values from general advice. Have a reptile-experienced veterinarian confirm the species and advise on the conditions for your individual animal.
