A newly adopted pet may hide or avoid people while adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings. Give them a quiet, predictable place to retreat, keep food, water and toileting needs accessible, and let them approach on their own terms. Don’t pull them out or force a greeting. Hiding by itself does not tell you whether a pet is ill, so watch for changes in eating, drinking, elimination or energy and contact a veterinarian if you’re concerned.
Why a newly adopted pet may hide
A new home brings unfamiliar people, smells, sounds and routines. A pet may respond by hiding, staying quiet, avoiding contact or eating less while they adjust. Greenfield/Hancock County Animal Management puts it simply: “Hiding is one way animals cope with stress.” That explanation does not rule out illness; look at the whole picture, not hiding alone. Greenfield/Hancock County Animal Management’s first-days guidance and the American Animal Hospital Association’s guidance for newly adopted dogs both discuss adjustment after adoption.
How to help your pet feel safer
Set up a quiet retreat with necessities nearby
Start with one calm room or area. Make sure your pet can reach food, water, a resting place and appropriate toileting without having to pass through a busy part of the home. For a cat, keep litter, food, water and resting areas accessible and predictable. For a dog, offer a familiar bed or an open safe area; use a crate only if the dog is comfortable in it. A hideaway or bed is optional—an existing safe spot or ordinary box may be enough for a cat.
Let the pet choose whether to interact
Sit nearby without blocking the way out. Speak softly, give the animal room to watch you and offer a treat only if they’re willing to take it. Don’t stare them down, drag them from a hiding place, punish fearful behavior or force a greeting. Low-pressure contact lets the pet approach when ready. The AAHA’s fear-reduction guidance likewise emphasizes reducing fear rather than escalating pressure.

Keep the first days calm and predictable
Pause welcome-home gatherings, nonessential outings and introductions to visitors or resident pets while your newcomer settles. Keep meals, walks or potty breaks, play and rest on a simple, consistent routine. Expand access to the home and increase interaction gradually as the pet shows comfort. When introducing resident pets, proceed slowly and supervise their interactions. See the Humane Society of Sonoma County’s adoption guidance for a dog-focused introduction to the 3-3-3 rule.
How long adjustment may take
You may encounter the “3-3-3 rule” for adopted dogs: roughly three days to decompress, three weeks to begin settling into a routine and three months to feel more at home. It is a shelter-sector rule of thumb for setting expectations, not a research-backed timetable or a promise. AAHA notes that individual dogs vary, and the Pennsylvania SPCA says the rule is not a guarantee; some animals need weeks or months. Don’t use a timeline to postpone veterinary advice if your pet seems unwell.

When hiding or reduced appetite needs veterinary advice
Hiding can accompany stress, but it does not establish the cause of appetite or digestive changes. Vomiting, persistent diarrhea, lethargy, signs of pain or other concerning symptoms call for veterinary advice. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the pet is a kitten, senior, has a known health condition or otherwise seems medically vulnerable.
Appetite guidance differs by species and source, so there is no single waiting period for every new pet:

- Dogs: AAHA advises consulting a veterinarian if reduced eating or drinking continues beyond a day or two. That is guidance for dogs, not a universal threshold for cats or pets with other risk factors. Contact a veterinarian sooner if other concerning signs appear. AAHA: Adopting a rescue dog.
Keep track of whether your pet is eating and drinking, eliminating and showing any symptoms beyond hiding. If you’re unsure whether a change is urgent, call your veterinary clinic and describe what you’re seeing.

If a dog’s anxiety continues or you are struggling to help them settle, ask your veterinarian about next steps and consider consulting a qualified canine behavior consultant. You can also ask the adoption organization what follow-up support it offers. For any species, seek veterinary advice if health concerns arise rather than assuming they are part of adjustment.
