Start by identifying what the cockatoos are damaging, then protect that surface with a suitable physical barrier or design change. Netting can protect crops and smaller areas; wire, perch modifications, shade cloth or metal sheathing may suit other surfaces. The right choice depends on the site, and wildlife-control rules vary by jurisdiction. In Australia, check with your state or territory authority before trapping, harming or relocating birds.
Assess the damage before choosing a fix
Note where the birds are landing or feeding and what they are affecting: a crop or garden bed, timber, furniture, a window frame, roof fittings or another fixture. A measure that excludes birds from a garden will not necessarily protect a perch or building component. Recording the locations and type of damage can help you choose the right intervention and explain the problem if you contact your council or wildlife authority.
Match the protection to the surface

If you are buying a product, choose for the specific area you need to protect rather than assuming one deterrent works everywhere. Wildlife-friendly netting on a frame is a relevant option for an affected garden or other area, provided the material and installation are suitable for the site.
Monitor the result and adapt the approach
Do not assume a deterrent will remain effective indefinitely. Victoria’s 2024 management guide says cockatoos are highly intelligent and that control measures may not work in every situation or for sustained periods. It recommends planning and varying measures to suit the location and likely damage. Keep track of whether the damage changes after installation, then adjust the approach if birds move to another surface or the original measure stops helping. Check wildlife rules before attempting control
Wildlife law depends on the state or territory, species, circumstances and method. Victorian rules are not national rules, and an exception for a named species or particular situation should not be treated as general permission to harm cockatoos.
- Victoria: The Conservation Regulator says protected native wildlife generally cannot be wilfully disturbed or destroyed without approval, describes an Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW) process and notes limited exceptions for specified circumstances. Its 2024 guide says cockatoos not covered by the specified General Exemption Order situations remain protected and must not be shot or harmed without DEECA authorisation. Check current requirements with the Victorian Authority to Control Wildlife information and the cockatoo guidance.
- New South Wales: NSW guidance describes protection for cockatoos and a landholder licensing pathway for certain wildlife-damage situations. Sutherland Shire Council also provides local advice on wildlife-friendly netting. Check current rules with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service licensing information.
- Queensland: Damage mitigation permits can apply in some cases. The application guidance requires applicants to describe methods tried to prevent damage or harm. See the Queensland damage mitigation permit information.
Before using any method that could disturb, capture, injure or kill birds, confirm the current rules with the relevant wildlife authority. Do not assume that a permit pathway or exception in one state applies elsewhere.

When to ask for help
Contact your local council or state or territory wildlife authority if the damage is extensive or you are unsure what is lawful. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service says it aims to work with landholders when wildlife causes property damage or economic hardship off park; its wildlife-management information can help you find the relevant pathway. For difficult roof, fixture or structural installations, consider a qualified exclusion professional who can assess the site and install a suitable barrier safely.
