What to Expect at a Veterinary Chiropractic Appointment for Your Dog

A first veterinary chiropractic visit should begin with history-taking and assessment, followed by a clear discussion of options and consent. Learn how to prepare, check credentials, coordinate with your veterinarian, and set realistic expectations about safety and evidence.

Your dog’s first veterinary chiropractic visit should be a discussion- and assessment-led appointment, not an automatic adjustment. Expect the practitioner to review your dog’s history, observe movement, examine areas of concern, explain what they found, discuss options and uncertainty, obtain your consent, and coordinate with your regular veterinarian. The exact sequence varies, and no professional standard requires every visit to include manipulation or imaging.

What a first appointment is meant to accomplish

A veterinary chiropractic appointment should help determine whether the proposed care is appropriate for your individual dog. It is not a substitute for diagnosing a serious illness, and the process should not begin with an assumption that chiropractic treatment is needed.

Professional standards describe competencies rather than one mandatory appointment script. A practitioner may review the case history, discuss current health needs, watch the dog stand and walk, examine anatomy, assess discomfort or asymmetry, and then explain findings and possible next steps. Some visits may end with advice or referral rather than treatment.

Your role is active. You should receive information in understandable language, have time to ask questions, and be free to accept or decline examination or treatment. The International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA) Code of Practice states that practitioners should “Obtain the appropriate consent before examination and treatment of the patient.”

Verify the underlying professional license

Ask whether the person is licensed as a veterinarian or chiropractor under the rules that apply where you live. Legal scope, supervision requirements, and who may examine or treat an animal vary by jurisdiction, so confirm details with the relevant licensing authority or veterinary regulator.

An animal-chiropractic certificate does not replace a government license. The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) and the American Chiropractic Certification Commission (ACCC) offer a voluntary private credential. The AVCA certification pathway requires an active license in veterinary medicine or chiropractic, approved post-graduate training, and written and practical examinations. Certification is a credential signal, not a guarantee of a particular result for your dog.

Ask about animal-specific education

Request the practitioner’s post-graduate training in animal chiropractic and any current certification. Also ask how they handle cases outside their competence. Standards used by professional associations include protecting patient welfare and referring when a patient’s needs exceed the practitioner’s training or authority.

Look for cooperative care

A suitable provider should be willing to take a complete history, explain findings and alternatives, discuss possible side effects, and communicate with your dog’s primary veterinarian. A promise that every dog will receive an adjustment, a fixed number of visits, or a guaranteed outcome is not supported by the evidence summarized below.

What to prepare and bring

The reviewed professional standards do not establish a universal document checklist, so ask the clinic what it wants before the appointment. In practical terms, be ready to provide accurate information about:

  • Diagnoses, injuries, surgeries, and when symptoms began.
  • Changes in gait, posture, activity, appetite, sleep, or behavior.
  • Current medications, supplements, and other therapies.
  • Tests or imaging your dog has already had and the results you know.
  • Your regular veterinarian’s treatment plan and any restrictions.

Write down your observations and your main questions. If your dog becomes fearful or painful with handling, tell the clinic in advance. Bring a leash or carrier that allows safe control, and follow any specific instructions the practice gives you. Do not stop medication or alter an existing treatment plan in anticipation of the visit.

What happens when you arrive

1. History and current concerns

The practitioner may begin by asking why you scheduled the visit, what you have noticed, and what other veterinarians have found. Explain the timeline rather than only naming a condition: when the problem appeared, what worsens or relieves it, and whether your dog’s function is changing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the time to disclose known bone, joint, neurologic, or systemic disease. Mention recent trauma even if your dog seems better. A complete history helps the practitioner decide whether chiropractic assessment is reasonable or whether another veterinary evaluation should come first.

2. Observation of posture and movement

You may be asked to let your dog stand, walk, turn, sit, or perform another simple movement. The practitioner may look for asymmetry, altered weight bearing, restricted motion, or signs of discomfort. Observation is not a diagnosis by itself; it is one part of deciding what needs further assessment.

3. Physical and musculoskeletal assessment

The practitioner may palpate or move parts of the body to assess alignment, range of motion, muscle tone, and areas that appear uncomfortable. Your dog’s response matters. Tell the practitioner immediately if your dog cries, tries to escape, becomes unusually still, or shows another sign of distress.

Do not assume that a hands-on examination automatically means treatment will follow. The findings should be explained before any proposed manipulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Findings and a proposed plan

A responsible provider should describe what was observed, what those findings may mean, and what remains uncertain. The discussion may include observation only, additional veterinary assessment, a chiropractic technique, another therapy, or referral. Ask the practitioner to distinguish an observation from a confirmed diagnosis.

Consent: what you should hear before treatment

Before examination or treatment, you should receive an understandable explanation of:

  • What the proposed care involves and which body area would be addressed.
  • Expected or possible benefits, without a promise of success.
  • Uncertainties and reasonable alternatives, including no chiropractic treatment.
  • Possible side effects or signs that should prompt a call to a veterinarian.
  • How your dog’s response will be assessed and when the plan will be reconsidered.

Consent is voluntary. You can ask to pause, decline a technique, or seek your regular veterinarian’s opinion. If the explanation is rushed, uses unexplained jargon, or treats your questions as an obstacle, that is a reason to stop and reconsider.

Will your dog receive an adjustment?

Not necessarily. The sources describing appointments and professional competencies do not establish that every first visit includes an adjustment. Treatment may be deferred if the history is incomplete, if the dog is distressed, if the findings suggest a different problem, or if the practitioner believes another assessment is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If manipulation is proposed, ask what technique is being considered, why it fits the findings, what your dog may feel, and what would make the practitioner stop. Your dog should be handled in a way that prioritizes welfare. You should never be pressured to continue because you have already paid for an appointment or because a treatment package was suggested.

Imaging is case-dependent

Do not assume that X-rays are routine or required. A secondary description of first appointments notes that imaging may be included in some examinations when it has not already been performed, but the professional standards reviewed do not establish a universal imaging protocol.

Ask whether existing images are adequate, whether new imaging would change the decision, who will interpret it, and whether your regular veterinarian should order or review it. Imaging decisions should be tied to your dog’s history and examination rather than used as an automatic step.

Important safety boundaries

Disclose structural disease and recent injury

The Merck Veterinary Manual warns that chiropractic thrusts can cause serious harm when bone or other structural elements are weakened. Tell both veterinarians about known fractures, bone disease, instability, cancer affecting bone, recent surgery, or other diagnoses that may alter risk. The available guidance supports this structural-risk warning, but it is not an exhaustive list of every possible contraindication.

Know when referral is more appropriate

Ask whether your dog needs an assessment by a veterinarian, veterinary neurologist, surgeon, or another qualified professional before any chiropractic care. A practitioner should refer when the case is outside their competence or when a problem requires diagnostic testing or treatment they cannot provide.

Watch your dog during and after handling

During the visit, report pain, panic, weakness, or a sudden change in behavior. Follow the clinic’s individualized aftercare instructions. If your dog develops a concerning change after treatment, contact the treating veterinarian promptly rather than assuming it is a normal response.

Coordinate with your dog’s regular veterinarian

Share the chiropractic practitioner’s name, credentials, findings, and proposed plan with your primary veterinarian. Ask how the providers will communicate and who will monitor the underlying condition. The AVCA practice analysis includes taking a case history, discussing health needs and consent, and coordinating care with the primary veterinarian.

Keep one current medication and treatment list. If recommendations conflict, ask the veterinarians to resolve the disagreement directly. Do not replace prescribed medication, rehabilitation, surgery, or diagnostic follow-up with chiropractic care unless the veterinarian responsible for that condition agrees.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Evidence for veterinary chiropractic in dogs remains limited. A 2021 systematic review by Haussler and colleagues included 14 eligible studies of veterinary musculoskeletal mobilization and manipulation. Thirteen studies involved horses and one involved dogs. The studies differed in quality and outcomes, and the authors said firm conclusions were difficult. The canine study concerned carpal immobilization and remobilization; it was not a broad test of chiropractic treatment for common canine conditions.

The American Animal Hospital Association and American Association of Feline Practitioners pain-management guideline, published in 2015, reached this historical conclusion: “The Guidelines Task Force has not found sufficient, reliable, non-contradictory evidence for the use of chiropractic care for pain management in veterinary medicine at this time.” That statement is a dated guideline assessment, not proof that no later research exists.

These sources do not establish a reliable benefit for a particular diagnosis, a standard number of visits, or a predictable outcome. Your decision should therefore depend on your dog’s diagnosis, risk factors, alternatives, and measurable response—not on a promise that an adjustment will correct the problem.

How to judge whether care is helping

Agree on observable goals before continuing beyond an initial assessment. Depending on the condition, examples might include easier rising, more even weight bearing, improved willingness to walk, or fewer signs of discomfort. Define how you will record the change and when the practitioner will reassess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what would count as insufficient improvement and what the next step would be. A plan that continues indefinitely without a review point makes it difficult to weigh benefits, burdens, and cost. If your dog worsens, develops a new symptom, or fails to improve within the agreed period, contact the regular veterinarian and reconsider the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Questions to ask at the appointment

  • What did you find, and which findings are observations rather than a confirmed diagnosis?
  • What care options are available, including no chiropractic treatment?
  • What benefits are plausible for my dog, and what remains uncertain?
  • What side effects or warning signs should I watch for?
  • Does my dog need another veterinary assessment or imaging before treatment?
  • How will we measure improvement, and when will we reassess?
  • How will you communicate with my dog’s regular veterinarian?
  • What professional license, animal-specific training, and certification do you hold?
  • What would make you stop treatment or refer my dog?

Comparing two practitioners

Use the same questions with each provider so the comparison is meaningful. Give greatest weight to legal authorization, clinical communication, safety, and coordination rather than to impressive-sounding claims.

Comparison point What to look for
Underlying authorization Active professional license and compliance with local scope-of-practice rules.
Animal-specific preparation Post-graduate animal-chiropractic training and any voluntary certification.
Assessment A complete history, observation of movement, examination, and an explanation of findings.
Consent Clear discussion of options, uncertainty, possible side effects, and the right to decline.
Care coordination Willingness to communicate with your primary veterinarian.
Follow-up Defined goals, a reassessment point, and a plan to refer or stop if the response is poor.

Signs to pause before proceeding

  • The provider cannot explain their underlying license or animal-specific training.
  • You are promised a guaranteed cure, a fixed outcome, or a predetermined number of visits.
  • Your dog’s diagnosis, medications, or existing veterinary plan are dismissed.
  • Consent is requested only after treatment has begun.
  • Imaging or a treatment package is presented as mandatory without a case-specific explanation.
  • The practitioner discourages communication with your regular veterinarian.
  • Your dog shows clear distress and the provider insists on continuing.

The practical takeaway for your first visit

Go expecting an evaluation and an informed conversation, not a guaranteed adjustment. Bring a clear history, disclose all diagnoses and treatments, verify the practitioner’s license and training, and ask how the proposed care fits with your veterinarian’s plan. Because the canine evidence base is limited, continue only when the rationale, risks, goals, and review plan are clear—and stop to seek veterinary reassessment when your dog’s welfare or response raises concern.
