Pack a compact version where you can reach it in the car or on a hike, and adapt it with your veterinarian for your dog’s health conditions and destination. It can stabilize a problem while you arrange veterinary care; it cannot replace a veterinarian or emergency hospital.
What belongs in a dog first-aid kit
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) checklist is a practical baseline. Keep the supplies together in a waterproof, easy-to-carry container and add items specific to your dog. A small pouch for daily travel and a larger container for evacuation supplies are often more useful than one oversized box that stays buried in luggage.

| Category | Pack | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Protection and control | Disposable gloves; a muzzle; spare leash and collar | A frightened or painful dog may bite. Do not muzzle a dog that is vomiting. |
| Bleeding and bandaging | Gauze roll; nonstick bandages or clean cloth; self-adhering nonstick tape; adhesive tape; blunt-end scissors; clean towels | A badly applied bandage can cause harm. If you are unsure how to bandage or splint, contact a veterinarian rather than experimenting. |
| Cleaning and flushing | Saline solution; sterile lubricating jelly; a small flashlight; an eye dropper or large needle-free syringe | Saline is for wound cleaning or eye flushing. Do not put hydrogen peroxide on a wound. |
| Small tools | Tweezers; digital thermometer | Use tools gently and seek veterinary advice for anything embedded or difficult to remove. |
| Poisoning contingencies | Activated charcoal and 3% hydrogen peroxide only if specifically directed by a veterinarian or poison-control professional | Do not give either product on your own. Never repeat a peroxide dose unless instructed. |
Bandaging and wound-care supplies
Gauze, nonstick dressings, clean cloth, self-adhering tape and adhesive tape cover the basic materials for protecting a wound until a clinic can examine it. Blunt-end scissors reduce the chance of cutting skin while you trim tape or fabric. Towels serve several purposes: they can keep a dog warm, provide a clean surface, help control mess and give you a way to handle a frightened animal without putting your face near its mouth.

Pack more than one dressing and enough tape for a replacement. Blood, mud or rain can make a single dressing unusable. Do not try to remove an object stuck in a wound; AVMA guidance is to leave an embedded foreign object in place and obtain veterinary care.

Protection, restraint and handling
Gloves protect you from blood and bodily fluids. A spare collar and leash provide a backup if equipment breaks or a dog slips away during an evacuation. A muzzle can reduce bite risk during painful handling, but it must never be used on a vomiting dog. Keep your face away from the mouth and handle an injured dog slowly. Pain and fear can change even a normally gentle dog’s behavior.
Flushing, inspection and measurement
Saline can be used to rinse a superficial wound or flush an irritated eye while you arrange professional care. A dropper or large needle-free syringe helps direct a controlled stream. A flashlight makes it easier to inspect a paw, coat or campsite injury in low light. Tweezers are useful for readily accessible debris, but stop if an item is embedded, the dog is in severe pain or removal would require digging into tissue. A digital thermometer belongs in the kit for information you can report to a veterinarian; do not delay urgent care while trying to obtain a temperature.
Put records and contacts in the same container
Physical supplies are only part of an emergency response. Keep a printed copy of your dog’s medical record with the kit, including current medications. Add the dog’s name, age, weight, sex, breed, allergies, chronic conditions, microchip details and your veterinarian’s instructions if available. Store a digital copy on your phone as a backup, but do not rely on a signal or a charged battery during an evacuation.

A first-aid kit is not an evacuation kit
A travel first-aid pouch handles immediate injuries. A disaster or evacuation container keeps your dog supplied when you may be away from home for days. The AVMA recommends the following larger-kit provisions:
- Food and a manual can opener when the food requires one.
- At least seven days of water and suitable bowls.
- A two-week supply of prescribed medication.
- Liquid dish soap and sanitation supplies.
- Medical, vaccination and identification records.
- A labeled carrier, plus an extra collar or harness and leash.
- A flashlight with spare batteries.
- Comfort items that help your dog settle.
Keep these supplies in a waterproof container that one person can carry. Rotate food, water and medicines before their expiration dates, and update records whenever treatment, address or contact information changes. The seven-day water and two-week medication quantities are preparedness recommendations from AVMA, not guarantees that a particular emergency will last that long.
Build a kit for the way you travel
Car trips
Keep a compact first-aid pouch in the passenger area or another location you can reach without unloading the vehicle. Store the larger evacuation container where it will not be crushed or exposed to excessive heat. CDC travel guidance recommends basic first-aid supplies in the car and says a travel-sized pet kit can be used for flights. In the car, use an appropriate carrier or a seat-belt harness and keep the dog restrained. Never leave a dog alone in a parked car.
Before setting out, identify veterinary hospitals along the route and at the destination. A daily health check while away can reveal changes in appetite, hydration, energy, breathing, stool or a wound before they become harder to manage. CDC also advises follow-up veterinary care after first aid.

Air travel
Airline rules, carrier dimensions and destination entry requirements vary, so check them before packing. Keep the travel-sized kit, records, medication and emergency contacts where you can reach them rather than in checked luggage. Include enough routine medication for delays, with the original label or prescribing information. Ask your veterinarian about any health concerns that could affect flying.
Hiking and camping
For a day outdoors, carry the small pouch, water, your dog’s identification information and a leash or harness backup. Add a towel and flashlight when the trip could extend into darkness or wet weather. In remote areas, a minor wound may require a longer wait for help, but the kit still serves only as a bridge to veterinary treatment. Tell someone your route and expected return time, and know how you will contact a clinic if the dog is injured without cell service.
Evacuations
Put the dog’s carrier, food, water, medications and records beside the first-aid container so they leave with you. A labeled carrier and duplicate leash reduce the chance of separation in a crowded shelter or vehicle. Comfort items can make an unfamiliar location less stressful, while sanitation supplies help you manage waste when normal facilities are unavailable.
Medication, motion sickness and anxiety
Do not add human pain relievers, sedatives, anti-diarrheal products or other medicines simply because they are common household items. Ask your veterinarian which, if any, products are suitable for your dog and the planned journey. For anxiety or motion sickness, the American Red Cross advises discussing treatment with a veterinarian and testing it in advance for adverse effects. A medication that causes excessive sedation, vomiting or an unexpected reaction should not be tried for the first time on travel day.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when an emergency happens
Start with safety and a call
- Move the dog and people away from traffic, fire, unstable ground or the suspected hazard if you can do so safely.
- Keep your face away from the mouth. Use a leash, carrier or muzzle only when appropriate; never muzzle a vomiting dog.
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital and follow its instructions while arranging prompt transport.
- Use the kit for limited first aid, such as covering a wound or flushing visible contamination, without delaying professional care.
AVMA’s guidance is explicit: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.” This statement appears in the AVMA brochure Pet First Aid (2023).
Suspected poisoning
Call a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital or poison-control center immediately. Have the dog’s species, breed, age, sex, weight, symptoms, suspected substance, estimated amount and time of exposure ready. Keep the product container, label or a clear photograph. Do not induce vomiting or give charcoal, hydrogen peroxide or another medicine unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically tells you to. Hydrogen peroxide must not be used on wounds, and a dose must not be repeated without instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBleeding, wounds and possible fractures
Use clean material to protect a wound while you obtain instructions and transport the dog. Do not remove an embedded object. A bandage or splint that is too tight, placed incorrectly or left on too long can worsen an injury; AVMA cautions that poor application can cause harm. If you do not know the correct technique, leave splinting and complicated bandaging to a veterinary professional.

Preassembled kit or do-it-yourself kit?
Either approach can work. The decision depends on whether the finished kit matches your dog and your travel pattern, not on packaging or the number of items in the box.
| Check | Preassembled kit | DIY kit |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Confirm that it includes the AVMA essentials, not just generic bandages. | Use the AVMA checklist as the contents list. |
| Portability | Choose a case that fits the car, daypack or carry-on. | Select a waterproof container sized for the trip. |
| Dog-specific needs | Add records, prescriptions, spare identification and veterinarian-approved items. | Build these in from the start. |
| Condition and expiry | Inspect seals, dates and damaged packaging when you receive it. | Track expiry dates and replace used or contaminated supplies. |
| Access | Store it where you can reach it quickly, not beneath heavy luggage. | Use labeled compartments so another traveler can find supplies. |
ASPCA guidance recognizes both options: owners may purchase a kit or assemble one. Whichever you choose, ask your veterinarian whether your dog’s medical condition, breed-related risks or destination calls for additions.
Inspect and practice before departure
- Check that gauze, tape, gloves and saline are sealed and clean.
- Replace expired medication and any item used since the last trip.
- Confirm that the thermometer works and that the flashlight has fresh batteries.
- Verify the dog’s weight, medication list, vaccination information and identification details.
- Call the destination emergency hospital to confirm its location and hours.
- Practice fitting the carrier, harness and spare collar when the dog is calm.
- Pack the kit where every adult traveler can reach it.
A short practice session also shows whether the muzzle, carrier or harness fits safely. Do not wait for an injury to discover that a supply is missing, damaged or unfamiliar.

Seek immediate veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, suspected poisoning, heat illness, major trauma, eye injuries, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting or any rapidly worsening condition. A kit can protect a wound, provide information and buy time during transport; it cannot diagnose the cause or determine whether an injury needs surgery, antidote, fluids or monitoring.
Daily checks during travel and prompt follow-up after first aid are part of CDC’s pet-travel advice. If your dog’s condition changes, call again even if the original wound appears covered or the dog seems temporarily calmer.
