Plan on keeping at least two compatible rats, providing a spacious and well-ventilated enclosure, feeding a rat-specific diet, giving daily attention and enrichment, and having access to a veterinarian who treats rats. A typical pet rat lives about two to three years, although some live longer, so the commitment is short compared with a dog or cat but still involves recurring costs, cleaning, handling and medical decisions.
Should I adopt one pet rat or more than one?
Adopt a bonded pair or trio rather than a single rat. Rats are social animals that need the company of other rats for normal interaction, rest and activity. The RSPCA Australia Knowledgebase states: “Rats are social animals and, as such, need the company of at least one other rat and the right environment to thrive.”

The RSPCA UK generally recommends a bonded pair or trio of the same sex, or a mixed-sex group only when the animals are desexed. Same-sex housing prevents accidental litters, but sex alone does not guarantee compatibility. Ask the rescue which rats already live together, whether they must remain together, and what introductions would be needed if you are adding to an existing group.

Choosing between a pair and a trio
| Option | What to check |
|---|---|
| Established bonded pair | Usually the simplest adoption arrangement because the rats already have a stable relationship. Confirm that both are healthy and that the rescue expects them to be adopted together. |
| Established bonded trio | Provides a larger social group, but requires an enclosure with enough space and several sleeping and hiding areas so individuals can rest apart. |
| Mixed-sex group | Use only when breeding is prevented through desexing and the rescue or veterinarian confirms that the combination is appropriate. |
Not all rats are compatible. A rescue can explain temperament, previous conflicts and safe introduction procedures far better than a generic compatibility rule. Never leave newly introduced rats together without supervision until the rescue’s process has been completed successfully.

How long do pet rats live?
Plan for approximately two to three years, according to the RSPCA UK, while recognizing that individual rats may live longer or die sooner. Age, inherited health, environment and veterinary care all affect an individual’s lifespan. Ask the rescue for each rat’s estimated age, medical history and any known chronic condition rather than assuming a young-looking rat is an exact age.
A short lifespan can mean several major decisions arrive close together: routine health checks, treatment for respiratory or other illnesses, and end-of-life care. Discuss likely veterinary costs and your approach to serious illness before adoption, not during an emergency.
What habitat do rats need?
Choose a secure, well-ventilated cage with enough floor area and height for the whole group to move, climb and explore. A solid floor is safer and more comfortable than wire flooring. Use absorbent, low-dust bedding deep enough for digging, plus safe nesting material. Provide multiple hides, tunnels, platforms, hammocks and other enrichment so rats can forage, retreat and choose where to sleep.
- Place the enclosure near normal household activity so the rats can observe and interact with people.
- Keep it away from loud speakers, vibrating appliances and other noise that can disturb daytime sleep or sensitive hearing.
- Provide more than one refuge and sleeping option when housing several rats.
- Make cleaning practical: a cage that is difficult to reach or dismantle is likely to be cleaned less reliably.
- Inspect shelves, ramps and fasteners regularly for damage, sharp edges or escape routes.
Rats are commonly active at night and around dawn and dusk, while sleeping during much of the day. Their schedule may not suit a child who expects a pet to be awake after school. Let sleeping rats rest; waking or repeatedly handling them during the day can cause stress.
Out-of-cage time and rat-proofing
Supervised exploration outside the cage adds exercise and stimulation. Before releasing rats, close doors and gaps, block access behind appliances, and remove electrical cables, toxic plants, medicines, small chewable objects and open water. Rats can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces and may chew quickly. Never leave them unsupervised with dogs, cats or other animals, even if those animals appear calm.

What do pet rats eat?
Make a commercial food formulated specifically for rats the dietary base. Food made for another small mammal may not provide the right balance. Supply clean water continuously and check that the bottle, bowl or other delivery system is working every day.
Appropriate fresh additions can include small portions of fruit, vegetables, cooked egg, grains and seeds, as suggested by the RSPCA UK. Treats should complement—not replace—the complete rat food. Avoid onion, citrus fruits, walnuts, rhubarb, grapes, raisins and chocolate. If you use food as enrichment, scatter or hide safe portions so rats can forage without allowing perishable food to remain in the cage and spoil.
Changing the rescue’s diet
Ask what each rat currently eats and buy that food before collection. An abrupt change can reduce eating or cause digestive upset. Keep the familiar diet initially and transition gradually if the rescue or veterinarian recommends a different food. Monitor appetite, droppings, weight and energy during any change.
What should I buy before bringing rats home?
Have the enclosure assembled and tested before adoption day. This avoids transporting rats into an unfinished or unsafe setup.
- Secure, ventilated cage with a solid floor and room for the entire group
- Rat-formulated commercial pellets or blocks already used by the rescue
- Reliable water bottle or bowl, plus a backup way to provide water
- Low-dust bedding and safe nesting material
- Several hides, tunnels, hammocks and chew-safe enrichment items
- Food bowls that cannot tip easily and materials for supervised foraging
- Cleaning supplies that are safe for animal housing
- A secure carrier for collection and veterinary visits
- Contact details for a veterinarian experienced with rats
Check every accessory for loose threads, sharp edges, toxic finishes and openings that could trap a foot or head. Wash or replace items when they become soiled, but retain some clean, familiar-smelling nesting material during a full clean to reduce disruption.

How much daily care do rats require?
Daily care includes checking water and food, observing each rat, removing spoiled food and soiled bedding, and providing interaction or enrichment. Plan regular cage cleaning as well as spot cleaning. Rats need gentle handling and opportunities to climb, investigate and forage; a cage alone is not sufficient stimulation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsObserve individuals, not just the group. A dominant rat can hide another rat’s reduced eating or withdrawal. Weighing rats periodically with a suitable scale can reveal gradual change that is difficult to see. Keep a simple record of weight, appetite, medication and unusual behavior to share with your veterinarian.
How do I find a suitable rescue and complete an adoption?
Start with a reputable local rescue or shelter and ask detailed questions before applying:
- What are each rat’s age, sex, temperament and health history?
- Which rats are bonded, and must they be adopted together?
- How does the organization prevent accidental breeding and manage sex separation or desexing?
- What food, bedding and routine are the rats used to?
- Have they shown respiratory signs, skin problems, dental concerns or previous aggression?
- What support is available after adoption?
Many organizations assess suitability, arrange a meeting, explain preparation, and complete paperwork and payment only after matching a household with appropriate animals. The RSPCA UK describes this type of application, review, meeting and home-preparation process. Requirements differ by organization, so ask what identification, landlord permission or household information is needed.
Prepare the enclosure, supplies and transport carrier before the meeting or collection date. Keep the carrier level, shaded and well ventilated during travel. On arrival, allow the rats to settle, offer their familiar food and water, and keep handling calm and brief until they begin exploring.

How much does it cost to adopt a pet rat?
There is no universal adoption price. Small-pet fees vary by rescue centre and species, and ongoing costs depend on local prices, enclosure quality, food, bedding and veterinary needs. Ask the rescue for its current fee rather than relying on an online average.
Budget in separate categories:
- Initial setup: cage, carrier, bedding, hides, hammocks, bowls and enrichment.
- Recurring supplies: rat food, bedding, nesting material and replacement accessories.
- Routine care: examination, weight monitoring and any recommended preventive or follow-up visits.
- Unexpected care: diagnostics, medication, emergency consultations and treatment for respiratory or other illness.
Before applying, call local practices to ask whether they see rats, what a consultation costs and which emergency service handles small mammals outside normal hours. A low adoption fee does not make rat ownership low-cost if veterinary care or a replacement enclosure is needed later.
How do I arrange veterinary care?
Identify a veterinarian experienced with rats before adoption and arrange a baseline check. Ask what follow-up schedule fits the individual’s age and history. Rats can conceal pain and illness, so a change from normal behavior matters.
Contact a veterinarian promptly for reduced appetite or drinking, weight change, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, eye or nose discharge, a rough coat, reduced activity, unusual posture or gait, or withdrawal from rat companions. Do not wait for several signs to appear. Bring the rat’s food details, weight record and medical information from the rescue.

Rats can be affectionate and intelligent, but they are not a hands-off children’s pet. Their nocturnal schedule, delicate bodies and need for supervised handling require an adult to remain responsible for care. Teach children to sit close to the floor, support the rat’s body, avoid grabbing the tail, and stop when the animal tries to escape or shows distress.

The RSPCA UK relays Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advice against pet rodents in households with children aged five or younger, pregnant people or people with weakened immune systems because of an increased risk of serious illness. Verify current public-health guidance for your household, wash hands after handling and cage cleaning, and keep rats and supplies away from food-preparation areas.
Questions to settle before you apply
- Does your landlord, lease or local authority permit rats?
- Can your household provide space for a large cage and a quiet daytime location?
- Who will clean, feed and observe the rats every day, including during travel or illness?
- Can you adopt a compatible pair or trio rather than one rat?
- Can you pay for routine and emergency veterinary care locally?
- Are all household members comfortable with nighttime activity, cleaning and a lifespan of roughly two to three years?
A 2021 UK online owner survey published in Veterinary Record received 677 complete responses and described both positive practices and welfare concerns. Because it was a voluntary survey, it should not be treated as a representative estimate of disease prevalence in all pet rats. It does reinforce the value of planning housing, social contact, observation and veterinary access before adoption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I adopt a single rat if I give it lots of human attention?
No. Rats need at least one compatible rat companion. Human interaction is valuable but does not replace rat-to-rat social contact.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should rats be kept in same-sex pairs?
Usually, yes, because same-sex housing prevents accidental breeding. Mixed-sex groups require desexing and confirmation from the rescue or veterinarian that the animals are compatible.
What is the safest first food after adoption?
Continue the rescue’s rat-formulated food at first, provide clean water, and change diets gradually only when the rescue or veterinarian recommends it.
How can I tell if a rat is ill?
Watch for appetite or drinking changes, weight loss or gain, diarrhea, breathing trouble, eye or nose discharge, rough fur, reduced activity, abnormal posture or gait, and social withdrawal. Contact a rat-experienced veterinarian when these occur.
The Bottom Line
Adopt rats only when you can provide compatible companions, a secure enriched habitat, species-appropriate food, daily observation and access to rat-experienced veterinary care. Contact local rescues for current fees and bonded-group information, and prepare the complete setup before the animals come home.
