What to Know Before Visiting a Cat Café or Rabbit Lounge

Before visiting a cat café or rabbit lounge, check the venue’s current reservation, age and supervision rules, keep food out of animal areas, follow staff instructions and wash your hands when you leave.

A cat café or rabbit lounge is an animal-contact venue, not simply a café with pets nearby. Before you go, confirm the location’s reservation, age, supervision, time-limit, capacity, food-and-drink, footwear and accessibility rules. During the visit, keep food away from animals, follow staff directions, supervise children closely and wash your hands when leaving the animal area.

Policies differ sharply between venues, and public-health guidance for animal exhibits is general rather than a guarantee that any particular lounge is risk-free. Treat the selected venue’s current policy as the final authority.

Start with the venue’s current rules

Do not assume a policy at one cat café or rabbit lounge applies elsewhere. A reservation may be optional at one location and mandatory at another; children may be welcome in one room but excluded from another; and a lounge may admit a fixed number of people for a timed session. Check the venue’s own reservation page or contact staff shortly before your visit because policies can change.

  • Whether an advance reservation is required or merely recommended.
  • Arrival instructions, late-arrival rules, session length and cancellation terms.
  • Minimum age, adult-supervision requirements and room capacity.
  • Where food and drinks may be consumed.
  • Footwear, shoe-cover, handwashing and sanitizer procedures.
  • Accessibility details, including entrances, seating, toilets and the physical layout of the animal room.
  • Whether resident animals are part of an adoption or rescue program.

These checks prevent the most common avoidable problems: arriving without a required pass, bringing a child who is below the minimum age, or expecting to eat while inside the animal area.

How rules differ in real venues

The following examples illustrate why you must read the policy for the specific location. They are the venues’ stated rules, not universal standards.

Venue example Reservation and capacity Age and supervision Food, hygiene or other stated rules
Calico Cat Cafe, Oaklyn, New Jersey Booking ahead is recommended to guarantee entry; no universal session length is established here. All ages are allowed; a supervising adult is required for children 13 and under. Visitors sanitize their hands and remove shoes or use shoe covers before entering the lounge. Food and drinks stay in the café rather than the cat lounge. Resident cats can be subject to an adoption application process.
Bunny Cafe San Francisco An online reservation is required; every guest needs a paid pass; the lounge is limited to 10 guests. Children must be at least five. Children under 12 need an accompanying adult. Food and drinks are prohibited in the lounge.
Kitty Cat Cafe and Adoption Lounge, Massachusetts Current reservation details should be confirmed with the venue. Only children aged eight and older may enter the cat area. Children aged eight through 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Follow the café’s current instructions for contact, hygiene and room access.

A difference such as “all ages” versus “eight and older” can determine whether your group is admitted. Confirm the rule for the actual room you will enter, not just the venue’s general marketing description.

Book and prepare step by step

  1. Choose the animal area. Some businesses have separate cat and rabbit rooms, while others operate only one type of lounge. Read the room-specific rules.
  2. Reserve every guest who must be counted. A venue may require a paid pass for each person, including children. Use the exact names and number of visitors requested by the booking system.
  3. Check the age and supervision wording. “Children allowed” does not necessarily mean children may enter alone. Note whether the adult must remain in the room and whether an age band has a separate requirement.
  4. Review timing and arrival instructions. Record the session start time, permitted late arrival, length of the visit and cancellation conditions. Plan transport so you can arrive with time for check-in.
  5. Ask accessibility questions in advance. Explain any mobility, sensory, allergy or seating needs and ask which parts of the route involve steps, shoe removal or close animal contact.
  6. Pack only what the venue permits. Keep meals, drinks and loose items out of the animal area unless staff explicitly provide a designated place for them.
  7. Read the conduct notice before entering. Staff may explain where to stand, how to move through the room and when contact must stop. Listen before approaching an animal.

Food, drinks and footwear

Keep food and beverages away from animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises separating eating and drinking from animal areas, and venues commonly enforce that separation by providing a café section outside the lounge or banning food and drinks inside it. Do not share human food with an animal.

Footwear rules are venue-specific. One cat café may ask visitors to remove shoes or put on shoe covers; another may not. Wear socks in good condition if shoes could come off, and follow the location’s instructions rather than improvising.

Hygiene and health precautions

CDC says, “Even animals that look clean and healthy can carry harmful germs.” Areas where animals live, roam or eat may also be contaminated. The practical response is straightforward:

  • Wash your hands immediately after touching an animal or anything in its living, roaming or eating area.
  • Wash again when leaving the animal area, even if you did not touch an animal or wore gloves. CDC specifically says, “Wash your hands when you leave animal areas, even if you didn’t touch the animals or if you wore gloves.”
  • Use soap and running water whenever available.
  • If they are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol, then wash with soap and running water as soon as possible. Sanitizer is a temporary fallback, not a replacement for washing after animal contact.
  • Keep hands away from your face while in the lounge, and do not eat until your hands have been washed.

CDC’s broader 2011 compendium for public animal venues recommends clearly separating animal, transition and nonanimal areas; keeping food preparation and consumption in nonanimal areas; providing handwashing facilities; explaining contact risks; and controlling traffic to avoid overcrowding. Those are broad public-health recommendations, not a claim that every café is regulated identically or independently inspected.

CDC reported a historical figure of about 100 outbreaks of illness in people linked to animals in public settings from 2010 through 2015. That figure, reported on a CDC page in 2024, is not a current annual rate and is not an estimate specific to cat cafés or rabbit lounges.

Who should take extra precautions?

CDC identifies children younger than five, people with weakened immune systems and adults aged 65 or older as groups more likely to become ill from germs animals carry. If someone in your party falls into one of these groups, discuss the visit with their clinician when appropriate and ask the venue about its handwashing facilities, crowding and room layout. A venue cannot make animal contact risk-free, so an individual decision may be to shorten the visit, avoid direct contact or skip the animal area.

People with allergies should also ask staff what separation is available between the animal room and café, whether clothing or surfaces are shared, and what assistance is available if symptoms begin. Staff can describe the premises; they cannot guarantee that an allergic reaction will not occur.

How to behave around cats and rabbits

Animal lounges work best when visitors let staff set the pace. Read the room’s instructions and observe before making contact. Approach cautiously, move slowly and give an animal space to retreat. Do not chase, corner, restrain or disturb an animal that is hiding, sleeping, eating or moving away. If a staff member says an animal is unavailable for contact, accept that direction immediately.

There is no single rabbit-handling standard established for every rabbit lounge, and one venue’s policy does not represent all rabbit facilities. Do not pick up, hold or feed a rabbit unless the selected venue’s staff expressly permit and explain that action. Apply the same principle to cats: ask before attempting any handling beyond gentle contact that staff have approved.

Keep bags, strollers, toys and other objects where the venue directs. They can obstruct walkways or become tempting objects for animals. Use the room’s designated seating and exits, and tell staff promptly if an animal appears distressed or if a visitor is ignoring the rules.

Visiting with children

Age limits and adult-supervision rules are enforceable entry conditions, not suggestions. An adult should remain close enough to intervene, rather than treating the lounge as drop-off childcare. Explain before arrival that children must move quietly, keep food away from animals, wash their hands and follow staff instructions even when an animal seems friendly.

CDC advises teaching children to approach animals cautiously and to follow venue rules. A child who cannot reliably follow those directions may not be ready for an animal lounge, regardless of the posted minimum age. Ask whether the room contains narrow walkways, low seating or a limit on the number of accompanying adults so your group can plan safely.

Adoption and rescue questions

Some cafés work with rescues and make resident animals available for adoption; others do not. If adoption interests you, ask whether applications are handled by the café or a partner organization, whether the animal remains in the lounge during the process, what screening is required and whether a visit is separate from an adoption appointment. Do not assume that interacting with an animal creates a hold or priority claim.

Choosing between two venues

When several locations are available, compare the policies that affect your actual group rather than relying on star ratings or atmosphere. Use this checklist:

Decision point Questions to answer Why it matters
Booking Is a reservation required? Does each guest need a paid pass? What happens if you arrive late? You may be refused entry or lose a timed session without the correct booking.
Visit format How long is the session, and is the room capped? Short, timed visits require different planning from open-ended café seating.
Age and supervision What is the minimum age, and which ages require an adult? Your whole party must meet the room’s rule, not merely the café’s general age policy.
Food and drink Is there a separate café area, and can anything enter the lounge? It determines where you can eat, drink and wash hands.
Hygiene Where are sinks, sanitizer stations, shoe covers and transition areas? Clear facilities make it easier to follow CDC precautions.
Accessibility Are the entrance, seating and animal room suitable for your needs? Animal rooms may have tight layouts or footwear procedures that affect access.
Animal placement Does the venue have a rescue or adoption relationship? It clarifies whether adoption information is available and who handles applications.

The available evidence supports comparing these policy categories, but it does not support a universal ranking of venues. The best choice is the one whose current rules fit your visitors and whose staff can answer your questions clearly.

What to do during and after the visit

During the session

  • Keep the number of people in the room within the posted limit.
  • Follow the traffic pattern and remain in areas staff identify as visitor spaces.
  • Stop contact when an animal withdraws or staff intervene.
  • Keep food, drinks and personal items outside the animal area.
  • Report spills, scratches, bites, a distressed animal or a broken rule to staff immediately.

When leaving

  1. Wash your hands before leaving the animal area, even if you wore gloves or had no direct contact.
  2. Follow the venue’s shoe-cover or footwear-disposal procedure.
  3. Wash again before eating, drinking or touching your face.
  4. If an exposure or injury occurred, tell staff promptly and follow their first-aid or medical guidance.

A well-planned visit is one in which you know the entry conditions, keep animal and eating spaces separate, let staff manage contact and leave with clean hands. Verify the chosen venue’s policy shortly before travel, because its rules—not another café’s—govern your visit.
