Take a cat on a day hike only if the destination permits cats, your veterinarian has no health concerns, and your cat is already comfortable outdoors on a harness and leash. If those conditions are met, pack water, a portable bowl, familiar food, waste bags, identification, and a secure carrier—alongside the usual hiking essentials for your route. A carrier does not make an unsuitable trail safe, and the right choice may be to leave your cat at home.
Can I take my cat hiking?
Possibly, but it depends on the trail, the individual cat, and the conditions that day. The National Park Service notes that many parks do not allow pets on hiking trails or boardwalks; rules vary, so check the exact park or trail before planning the outing. Read the National Park Service’s hiking-with-pets guidance and verify current local rules.
A cat should be healthy enough for the outing, comfortable outdoors, and acclimated to wearing a properly fitted harness and leash. Cornell describes outdoor access as an option for cats, not a recommendation that every cat should go outside; Humane Society guidance recommends training cats to walk on a harness and leash. Ask your veterinarian about your cat’s health, vaccination status, and local exposure risks before going.
If your cat is frightened by outdoor sounds, resists the harness, or has not had gradual supervised practice, do not use a hike as the first training session. Choose a suitable, quiet place to practice—or leave the cat home. Carrying a cat in a backpack is not a substitute for checking trail rules or deciding whether your cat can tolerate the outing.

Cat hiking packing checklist
Harness, leash, and identification
- Properly fitted harness and leash: Bring these only if your cat has already practiced wearing them and can tolerate supervised outdoor activity. Check fit and closures before setting out so the cat cannot slip free. See the Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance and the Humane Society’s guidance on cats, wildlife, and leash training.
- Identification: Make sure your cat has current identification. Humane Society guidance recommends current rabies vaccination; confirm with your veterinarian what is appropriate for your cat and destination.
Water, food, and comfort
- Fresh water and a portable bowl: Offer water regularly and bring enough for the cat and people. The National Park Service suggests lightweight or collapsible bowls as practical pet gear, and Cornell advises keeping fresh water available to cats outdoors. Neither source gives a hike-specific water allowance for an individual cat.
- Familiar food or treats: Pack a small amount in a sealed container. The National Park Service advises bringing food and water for pets but does not prescribe a cat-specific amount for a day hike.
- A plan for shade and changing conditions: Choose a cooler time or shaded route where possible. If the weather or route becomes unsuitable, shorten the outing or turn back rather than relying on gear to overcome heat or exposure.
Carrier, waste bags, and preventive care
- Secure carrier: Use a carrier to confine your cat during the drive and keep it available as a retreat or exit option. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that cats be confined in a carrier during car travel and says not to leave pets unattended in a car. Its guidance does not establish that backpack-style carriers suit every trail outing. Read AVMA’s travel guidance.
- Waste bags: Pack out pet waste wherever required, and follow the destination’s rules. The National Park Service advises pet owners to dispose of waste properly; check local requirements before departure.
- Parasite prevention: Ask your veterinarian whether prevention is appropriate for your cat and the location. Cornell notes that parasite-prevention choices depend on lifestyle and exposure, so do not select a product based on a general hiking checklist. See Cornell’s parasite-prevention guidance.
Bring the human hiking essentials, too
Pack for the route, weather, remoteness, and time outdoors—not just for the cat. The National Park Service describes its 10 Essentials as a minimum baseline and notes that conditions may call for more. A practical starting list is:
- Water and food for each person
- Navigation suited to the route
- Weather-appropriate layers and sun protection
- First-aid supplies
- Repair and emergency items, plus a light if you may be out near dawn or dusk
- A bag for trash
The National Park Service’s hiking safety guidance covers preparation, while its Guadalupe Mountains day-hike checklist offers one park-specific example of items such as water, sturdy footwear, layers, food, sunscreen, first aid, and a light. That example is not a universal prescription for water quantity or gear; adapt supplies to your own hike.

How much water should I bring for my cat?
Bring fresh water and offer it often, but there is no hike-specific amount established here for every cat. A cat’s needs depend on the individual and the conditions, so ask your veterinarian if you need a plan for your cat. Do not use a human hiking hydration estimate as a cat target.
Cornell’s general estimate is about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day, with water from food contributing. That is a daily estimate, not a calculation for exertion or a particular outing; see Cornell’s feline hydration guidance. For outdoor access, Cornell also advises that fresh water always be available.

Heat warning signs: when to stop and get help
Stop the hike and move your cat to a cool area if heat becomes a concern. Cornell lists weakness or collapse, excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea as possible heatstroke signs. If you see them, Cornell advises moving the cat to a cool area with a draft, gently wetting the fur with cool—not very cold—water, and contacting a veterinarian immediately. Read the full Cornell feline heat-safety guidance.
Turn back or end the outing if your cat shows distress, cannot settle, or the conditions make shade, water, or a safe retreat impractical. Keep your cat away from wildlife and follow local rules for pets and waste. A shorter outing—or no hike—is a better choice than pressing on when your cat is uncomfortable.
