- Current identification: Make sure your dog’s ID tag is up to date. Sheffield also advises microchipping; requirements and guidance differ by location. Sheffield’s dog-walking guidance and Toronto’s leash guidance offer local examples.
- Waste bags and backups: Take enough for the full outing and keep a few extras somewhere accessible. Do not assume a park will have bags or bins. - Water and a portable bowl: Bring them for longer walks, warm conditions, or routes where safe drinking water is uncertain. Take breaks as needed. Match your kit to the route and weather
On a short, mild-weather walk
Keep the basics simple: leash, current ID, and enough bags, including a backup. Check the route for posted rules and waste facilities rather than relying on park-provided supplies.

On a long walk or in warm weather
Pack water and a portable bowl, and plan breaks. In hot weather, avoid hot pavement and choose cooler walking times. Charlotte’s guidance recommends personal water and breaks; Toronto likewise suggests taking water on long walks. The sources do not establish a universal water volume or walking duration, so adapt to the conditions and your dog.
On salted or icy streets
Consider paw booties or paw protectant before setting out, and carry a towel for cleaning paws after exposure. If conditions make the route uncomfortable, change the route or timing rather than relying on gear alone.

Check local leash, cleanup, and park rules
City rules are not interchangeable. Toronto says dogs must be leashed in public except in designated off-leash areas and sets local leash requirements. Sheffield advises using a lead when a dog does not have reliable recall and says to dispose of waste in a bin or take it home. Sydney recommends bringing personal bags even where some parks provide them. These are local examples, not universal rules; check municipal guidance and signs at your destination.
When selecting gear, focus on whether it fits your dog comfortably, attaches securely, gives you suitable control, complies with local leash rules, and is easy to carry, dispense, or clean. No specific brands or models are established as best for city walks.

Routine walks versus emergency supplies
A regular walk kit is not an evacuation kit. NYC emergency guidance lists additional supplies such as medication, food, water, dishes, first-aid supplies, and cleanup bags.
