A cat first aid kit should help you protect your cat, control minor bleeding, and get useful information to a veterinarian—not replace veterinary treatment. Keep these nine categories together at home and make the kit easy to carry. As the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) puts it in its 2023 Pet First Aid brochure, “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”

What to include in a cat first aid kit

Official checklists from the AVMA and ASPCA cover many of the same practical supplies. These nine categories organize those basics for a cat; they are not a claim that either organization prescribes this exact nine-item list.

  1. Emergency contacts

Write down your regular veterinarian’s name, phone number, and address, plus the nearest emergency veterinary clinic’s details. Add animal poison-control contact information. The ASPCA Poison Control page lists 888-426-4435, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Check the page for current service details.

  2. Your cat’s medical information

Keep a current copy of medical records and a list of medications. Include your cat’s name, age, weight, known conditions and allergies, and your contact information. Store paper copies in a waterproof sleeve or container, or keep a readily accessible digital copy.

  3. Gauze and nonstick wound dressings

Pack sterile gauze pads or roll and nonstick pads to cover a wound or apply pressure while you contact and travel to a veterinarian. For bleeding, place clean gauze or cloth over the area and apply firm, direct pressure. Severe bleeding needs immediate veterinary care.

  4. Bandage tape

Include tape suitable for securing a dressing. A bandage applied too tightly or incorrectly can worsen an injury. If you are unsure how to bandage the area, use direct pressure while getting veterinary guidance rather than attempting a tight wrap.

  5. Disposable gloves and clean towels

Gloves help protect you when handling wounds. Clean towels can provide padding, help with cleanup, or assist with careful restraint. An injured or frightened cat may bite or scratch even if normally gentle, so handle calmly and avoid putting your face near the cat.

  6. Blunt-tip scissors and tweezers

Use blunt-tip scissors to cut bandage material safely. Tweezers may help with a small, superficial foreign object, but do not pull an object embedded in a wound; that can cause more injury or bleeding.

  7. Sterile saline and flushing supplies

Keep sterile saline for appropriate wound or eye flushing. Follow a veterinarian’s instructions for the specific injury, and do not assume that every wound or eye problem should be treated at home.

  8. A digital thermometer and small flashlight

A digital thermometer and small flashlight appear on veterinary first-aid checklists. The light can help you examine your cat; do not use a temperature reading alone to decide what treatment is needed. Ask a veterinarian how to take and interpret it for your cat.

  9. A secure carrier and transport basics

Keep a sturdy carrier available, along with a towel for gentle handling. For an injured cat, the ASPCA advises gently covering the head with a blanket or towel to reduce bite risk, then placing the cat in an open-topped carrier or box. Support the head and avoid twisting the neck.

What to do if your cat is injured

Use first aid only to protect your cat while arranging veterinary care. Call the clinic for guidance and, when possible, call ahead so staff can prepare. Severe bleeding, trouble breathing, collapse, or seizures require urgent veterinary help; do not delay care to complete a first-aid routine.

What to do if your cat may have been poisoned

Call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service immediately. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so. Have the product or plant name, estimated amount, time of exposure, your cat’s weight, and any symptoms ready. Keep packaging or a photo of the suspected substance if you can do so safely.

Hydrogen peroxide and activated charcoal are not routine treatments to administer on your own. The ASPCA’s kit checklist mentions fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide but says to check with a veterinarian or poison-control expert first; the AVMA also warns against inducing vomiting or giving charcoal unless directed. Do not put either in your cat’s kit as an invitation to use it without professional advice.

Assemble a kit or buy one ready-made?

Either approach can work. Judge a kit by its contents and usefulness for your cat rather than by its label or item count.

  • Check whether it contains the basic dressings, tape, gloves, tools, saline, and other appropriate supplies listed above.
  • Confirm supplies are cat-appropriate, intact, and in date; replace anything used or expired.
  • Make sure the kit is easy to carry and leaves room for medical records and veterinarian-approved additions.
  • Ask your veterinarian whether your cat’s health conditions or medications call for specific additions.

The available checklists do not establish a best commercial kit, so no particular product can be recommended on that basis.

Keep evacuation supplies separate from the first-aid pouch

A first-aid kit is only one part of disaster preparation. For evacuation, the American Red Cross recommends also having a secure carrier, food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter and a pan, medications, and medical records in a waterproof container. Keep those supplies accessible and portable so they are ready to go with your cat.
