Pack a secure carrier suited to your cat’s mode of travel, familiar food and water, identification, a current photo, relevant health records, and cleaning supplies. Before you leave, check the exact airline, state, or destination-country requirements: there is no single paperwork or carrier checklist for every route.
Start with this cat travel packing checklist
- Carrier: Choose one suitable for car, airline cabin, or air cargo. Check secure closures, ventilation, fit, and the carrier’s dimensions against the airline’s current rules. Your cat should be able to stand, turn around, and lie naturally within the applicable space.
- Identification: Bring your cat’s identification details, a current photo, and your veterinarian’s contact information. Keep owner and receiver contact details handy if your cat is traveling by air.
- Food and water: Pack the food your cat normally eats and water, with a plan for safe access during the trip. Cargo kennel dish requirements do not automatically apply to an in-cabin carrier.
- Health records and route documents: Carry relevant health information and any certificates, vaccination records, or other paperwork required for your route and transport provider.
- Familiar items and cleanup supplies: A familiar blanket or small comfort item, waste bags, wipes, and spare absorbent material are practical additions, not universal regulatory requirements.
Choose and prepare a carrier for your travel mode
The right carrier depends on how your cat will travel. A car restraint, an airline cabin carrier, and an air-cargo kennel are not interchangeable by default. Check the carrier rules with the airline if flying; the air-cargo kennel details below are not a universal cabin-carrier specification.
By car
Keep your cat secured in a carrier while the car is moving. The American Veterinary Medical Association says restraint can help a cat feel secure and keep it from getting under the driver’s feet or escaping during stops. See the AVMA travel guidance. Position the carrier so it stays stable, and do not let the cat roam loose in the vehicle.
For longer drives, plan how you will offer food, water, and opportunities to use a litter tray without letting your cat escape. A portable tray and familiar litter can be useful conveniences; they are not universal requirements in the cited guidance.

By airline cabin
Ask the airline about its current carrier dimensions, acceptance rules, reservation process, and document requirements before buying a carrier or booking. A carrier accepted by one airline or travel arrangement may not meet another’s rules. Keep your cat contained and follow the airline’s instructions throughout the journey.
By air cargo
USDA APHIS describes specific kennel requirements for the air-transport context covered in its Pets on Planes preparation guidance. These are cargo-kennel details, not automatic requirements for every cabin carrier.

- Keep the interior clean and sanitized, with no sharp points. The floor must be leak-proof and covered with an unused litter pad or a collection tray.
- Attach food and water dishes to the inside of the kennel door so they can be reached without opening it.
- Use labels and a document pouch for contact, routing, health, and feeding and watering information.
In the cargo scenario APHIS describes, the owner or agent must certify that food and water were offered within four hours of airport delivery. Confirm the applicable instructions with the airline and the relevant officials for your specific transport arrangement.
Check paperwork for your exact route
Paperwork depends on where your cat is going and how it is traveling. International destination rules, state entry rules, and airline boarding rules are separate checks—not substitutes for one another.

Bring rabies documentation if the relevant state, country, or airline requires it; it is not a universal requirement for every route. For the APHIS air-travel certificate described in its lesson, a licensed veterinarian signs the Health and Acclimation Certificate within 10 days of travel, and it states the temperature range in which the animal may travel. Check whether that certificate applies to your particular destination and transport arrangement rather than assuming it is required for all cat travel.

Ask your veterinarian whether your cat is fit for the specific trip, taking health, temperament, breed, and travel conditions into account. APHIS’s air-travel guidance says animals in the context it describes must be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned; that is not a general rule for every kind of travel.

Short-nosed breeds, including Persian, Himalayan, and Burmese cats, may have more difficulty with air travel, according to APHIS. The AVMA cautions against tranquilizers for air travel because medication may increase heart or respiratory risks. Do not give a sedating medication without discussing it with your veterinarian. Do a final check before departure
- Confirm the route, transport mode, and who sets the applicable entry and boarding rules.
- Verify carrier dimensions and acceptance with the airline if flying; confirm kennel and feeding or watering instructions if cargo transport applies.
- Ask your veterinarian about fitness to travel and obtain any route-specific certificates or records in time.
- Pack identification, a current photo, contact details, usual food and water, and the documents required for the trip.
- For a car journey, secure your cat in the carrier before moving and plan safe stops for care.
