What to Put on the Floor of a Chicken Coop

Clean, dry pine or softwood shavings are a practical floor covering for most enclosed backyard coops. Here’s how much to use and how to keep litter dry.

For most enclosed backyard coops, put clean, dry pine or other softwood shavings over the solid floor. Start with about 4 inches, then adjust to the litter’s condition and your cleaning routine. Keep it dry, remove wet or caked patches, and ventilate the coop; those habits matter more than finding a supposedly perfect bedding material.

Choose bedding for an enclosed coop floor

Litter cushions birds’ feet, absorbs moisture, dilutes manure, and gives chickens material to scratch. The floor beneath it may be concrete, wood, or earth; the bedding sits on top and needs regular attention.

Pine or other softwood shavings: a practical default

Extension guidance commonly recommends wood shavings for indoor poultry floors. Choose clean, dry material without contaminants. The guidance does not establish that every bagged product is equivalent, so check the material itself rather than relying on a brand name.

Straw: usable with more attention to moisture

Straw is included in some deep-bedding recommendations, including for winter. But when it stays wet it can mat or turn slimy. Its suitability depends on the coop’s conditions and how promptly you remove damp areas; it is not universally unsuitable, nor is it maintenance-free.

Other materials: consider the context

Material or approach What to know
Sawdust It appears among possible poultry-litter materials, but chicks may eat it. Larger shavings are a more straightforward general choice unless bird age and management make sawdust appropriate.
Rice hulls, peanut hulls, and other agricultural by-products These are used or considered as alternatives, but availability and performance vary. A University of Florida IFAS discussion reports limited success with rice hulls in broiler houses under the conditions covered; that does not establish how they perform in every backyard coop.
Sand Sand is discussed for outdoor runs and scratching areas, but the sources do not establish it as a universal indoor-coop bedding choice. Keep the run surface and the enclosed coop floor as separate decisions.
Deep bedding This is a management method, not just a material. It relies on sufficient dry litter, regular monitoring, adding fresh bedding, and a deeper clean when needed.

When comparing options, consider absorbency and drying, cleanliness, local availability and cost, ease of removing wet material, and disposal or composting plans. UConn’s guidance also identifies low toxicity, freedom from contaminants, and potential reuse as desirable litter traits.

How deep should coop bedding be?

Published recommendations differ because they address different settings and methods. Cornell Cooperative Extension recommends about 4 inches of absorbent litter for an indoor coop floor; University of California poultry-house guidance gives a typical depth of 2 to 4 inches. These are starting points, not a single proven optimum for every backyard coop.

For a deep-bedding approach in cold weather, University of Minnesota Extension recommends 4 to 6 inches of straw or shavings, with fresh material added on top. Monitor the bedding rather than relying on depth alone: litter that is wet or caked needs attention even if it is deep enough by a guideline.

Keep litter dry and manage odor

Wet litter can cake and contribute to ammonia and pathogen problems. Waterers are common places for damp patches to develop. Remove or rake localized wet spots, add dry material, and correct leaks or condensation. Ventilation helps moisture-laden air leave the coop.

  • Check around waterers and other areas that may get wet.
  • Remove damp or caked litter instead of covering persistent wetness with fresh bedding.
  • Fix leaks and address condensation.
  • Ventilate the coop so moisture can escape while maintaining a suitable shelter for the birds.

A persistent ammonia smell or damp surfaces are signs to improve cleaning and ventilation, not reasons to mask the odor with more bedding.

Use a different surface strategy for an outdoor run

Coop bedding and run ground cover serve different settings. Cornell recommends absorbent litter such as wood shavings inside and identifies dry sand as an outdoor-run ground cover. A bottomless portable coop is another distinct system: UMass Extension describes it as a movable setup over ground, rather than a standard enclosed coop floor with bedding.

Cold-weather bedding is not a substitute for shelter

For its winter deep-bedding method, Minnesota Extension recommends 4 to 6 inches of straw or shavings, turning soiled top material down and adding fresh bedding; the system calls for a deeper clean in spring. University of New Hampshire Extension’s 2024 guidance suggests 4 to 6 inches of natural material such as straw or pine shavings for insulation when a coop is open to the ground. These recommendations apply to their stated contexts. Bedding does not replace a dry, appropriately ventilated shelter.
