Llamas are generally larger, with longer faces and banana-shaped ears, and are associated with carrying loads and guarding. Alpacas are smaller, with shorter pointed ears and finer fleece, and are raised mainly for their fiber. To tell them apart, look at size, ears, face shape, and coat together: individual appearance and coat condition can vary.

How can you tell a llama from an alpaca?

Use several features rather than relying on one. A large animal with a long face and curved, banana-shaped ears is more likely to be a llama; a smaller animal with a rounder face and short, pointed ears is more likely to be an alpaca.

Feature Llama Alpaca
Typical size Zoo Atlanta says llamas can reach about 4 feet at the shoulder and 250 pounds. Source: Zoo Atlanta, 2026. Zoo Atlanta gives about 3 feet at the shoulder and 110–190 pounds. The Smithsonian gives an adult range of 100–200 pounds and 32–40 inches at the shoulder; its page is undated. Zoo Atlanta, 2026; Smithsonian National Zoo, undated.
Ears and face Longer, banana-shaped ears and a longer face. Zoo Atlanta; Merck Veterinary Manual. Shorter, pointed or spear-shaped ears and a smaller, rounder face. Zoo Atlanta; Merck Veterinary Manual.
Fleece Generally coarser, and may include more guard hair. Smithsonian National Zoo; Merck Veterinary Manual. Dense, fine fleece prized for warmth and fiber. Zoo Atlanta, 2026; Smithsonian National Zoo.
Typical human use Pack and guard animal. Zoo Atlanta; Smithsonian National Zoo. Raised mainly for fleece and textiles. Zoo Atlanta; Smithsonian National Zoo.

Are llamas bigger than alpacas?

Yes. Llamas are the larger of the two. Zoo Atlanta’s comparison puts llamas at up to about 4 feet at the shoulder and 250 pounds, compared with alpacas at around 3 feet and 110–190 pounds. For alpacas, the Smithsonian lists a broader adult range of 100–200 pounds and 32–40 inches at the shoulder; the page does not display a publication year, so treat it as an undated reference.

These are reference figures, not a way to identify every animal by measurement. A visible difference in overall build, combined with ears and face shape, is more useful than trying to estimate an exact weight.

Which has softer fleece?

Alpaca fleece is generally finer, denser, and softer than llama fleece, which is typically coarser and can contain more guard hair. Alpacas are bred primarily for fiber, while llamas were selected more for strength and practical work. Individual coats vary, so the distinction describes typical fleece rather than every animal or every part of its coat.

Alpaca fleece types

  • Huacaya: Crimpy fleece that grows in a lofted, fluffy-looking coat.
  • Suri: Straight fleece that forms long, corded locks.

Zoo Atlanta reports more than 20 natural fiber shades for alpacas. Zoo Atlanta, 2026.

What were llamas and alpacas bred to do?

Llamas are associated with carrying loads, trekking, and guarding; alpacas are raised mainly for fleece used in textiles. These typical roles help explain their different builds and coats, but they are not a guarantee of an individual animal’s behavior or use.

How are llamas and alpacas related?

Both are domesticated South American camelids associated with the Andes. The cited animal summaries link llamas to wild guanacos and alpacas to wild vicuñas. Zoo Atlanta says llamas were domesticated from wild guanacos 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. Zoo Atlanta, 2026; Smithsonian National Zoo.
