Kittens raised by their mother should generally stay with her until they are at least eight weeks old; eight to nine weeks is preferable when possible. Weaning starts earlier, usually around three to four weeks, but learning to eat solid food does not mean a kitten is ready for full separation. If the mother cannot care for the litter, ask a veterinarian for advice rather than relying on the usual timeline.
How old should a kitten be before leaving its mum?
For a kitten being raised by its mother, use eight weeks as the usual minimum age for full separation. Cats Protection recommends staying with the mother until at least eight weeks, and says eight to nine weeks if possible. This is general animal-care guidance, not a universal legal minimum. Rules on the age at which a kitten may be transferred can vary by location; check the relevant official local rules if you need a legal answer.
Weaning is not the same as being ready to leave
Around three to four weeks: weaning may begin
Weaning is a gradual change from nursing to solid food, not a single event. Cats Protection says it can begin around three to four weeks and take several weeks. Around six to seven weeks: short periods apart
Cats Protection says kittens can start spending short periods away from their mother at around six to seven weeks. That is not the same as moving to a new home or being fully separated.
At least eight weeks: full separation
Wait until at least eight weeks for full separation. Weaning completion estimates differ: ASPCA says kittens are usually weaned between eight and ten weeks, while VCA says they are typically fully weaned at about eight weeks. These are general milestones, not clearance to separate every kitten at that age. ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance and VCA’s guidance on feeding growing kittens describe those ranges.

Why staying with the mother and littermates matters
Time with the family helps kittens develop feeding independence and learn early social behaviors. Cats Protection identifies the period from two to seven weeks as an important socialisation period. Early separation may affect health and socialization; Cats Protection also notes that kittens separated before eight weeks may retain juvenile behaviors such as kneading or suckling. These recommendations are care guidance, not a quantified estimate of the effect for every kitten.
If you are unsure about a kitten’s behavioral development or disease risk, ask a veterinarian about the timing for that individual kitten. There is no single later age established here that suits every kitten.

When the mother cannot care for the kittens
If the mother has died, rejected the litter, or is too ill to care for them, the ordinary rehoming timeline may not apply. Hand-rearing and feeding decisions depend on the kittens’ situation, so contact a veterinarian promptly for practical guidance. This is especially important if a kitten is not feeding or seems unwell.
For orphaned kittens, ASPCA describes using commercial kitten milk replacer and making the transition to solid food gradually. Cow’s milk is not an appropriate substitute. Kitten milk replacer is for kittens that need hand-rearing; it is not a routine replacement for a mother who is nursing normally.

What to prepare as kittens approach a new home
Choose food formulated for kittens, and make food and water bowls and a litter box available in their space. Match feeding to the kitten’s development and the advice you receive from a veterinarian. A kitten still nursing normally does not need formula simply because it is approaching the age when kittens may leave their mother.
