Wolf pups are born blind and deaf. Their eyes usually open at 11–15 days (Yellowstone’s National Park Service gives 12–14 days), they begin standing and taking awkward steps during the second to third week, and early high-pitched howling attempts appear around that transition. In a field study of Arctic wolves, one pup howled at 26 days and pups began initiating group howls at 52 days. These are developmental guides, not fixed deadlines: opening the eyes is not the same as having mature vision, and a recorded first howl is not necessarily the instant a behavior began.

What wolf pups are like at birth
A newborn wolf pup begins life dependent on the den and its pack. Its eyes are closed and its ear canals are not functioning, so it cannot see or hear its surroundings. The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute gives a typical birth weight of roughly 16 ounces (450 grams). That figure is a reference point for the source’s wolf account, not a promise that every pup weighs exactly the same amount.
Because the senses are initially unavailable, early behavior is not a test of alertness in the way it would be for an older pup. A newborn may squeak, whimper, nurse and shift position without being able to orient visually or respond to sound as an older wolf does. The important developmental change is gradual: the eyelids open first, while the visual system continues maturing afterward.

When do wolf pups open their eyes?
The usual window
Most wolf pups begin opening their eyes at approximately 11–15 days old. Yellowstone National Park’s National Park Service page gives a narrower educational range of 12–14 days. The slight difference reflects the fact that these are rounded developmental descriptions rather than a single measured deadline.
Eye opening can occur over more than one day. A pup may show a narrow slit before the lids are fully open, and the two eyes do not have to appear identical at the same moment. That visible change marks the beginning of visual access, not the completion of visual development.
Why open eyes do not equal adult-like sight
The International Wolf Center notes that pups cannot perceive forms immediately after their eyes open. In practical terms, an observer should distinguish between the eyelids separating and the pup being able to make useful visual sense of objects, littermates or the den entrance. Sight develops over the following weeks, so a pup with open eyes may still rely heavily on touch, smell and close contact.

When do wolf pups start standing and walking?
Standing comes before reliable walking
The International Wolf Center places the transition to standing and walking in the 14–24-day period. At first, a pup may push up briefly, lose balance and settle back down. Those attempts are meaningful because they show the transition from crawling or scooting to weight-bearing movement, but they should not be confused with the confident gait of an older wolf.
Walking begins as a series of short, unstable efforts. Pups may wobble, splay their legs or manage only a few steps before resting. “Can walk” in a developmental account therefore means that at least some walking is possible, not that the pup can travel far, keep up with adults or move safely over uneven ground.
What the Arctic field observations show
In L. David Mech’s field observations of Arctic wolf pups near Eureka, Ellesmere Island, an individual pup was observed walking at 20 days. The observation also illustrates how tentative the milestone can be: an emerging pup of that age could barely stand, while another pup observed at 28 days walked with a waddle.
These observations come from study seasons spanning 1987 to 2006 and were published in Arctic Wolf Pup Behaviour in 2022. They provide concrete examples of early locomotion, not a universal timetable for gray wolves everywhere. The earliest age recorded in a field notebook is not necessarily the true beginning of the behavior; a pup may have taken an earlier step when no observer was present.

When do wolf pups start howling?
There is more than one meaning of “start howling”
Wolf pups do not switch from silence to a fully formed adult howl in one instant. Early communication includes simpler sounds such as whimpering and squeaking. The first howl-like efforts are often high-pitched and brief. Later, vocalizations can become more recognizable as howls and can occur in a social setting with other wolves.
For that reason, an answer should specify whether it means a first individual attempt or participation in coordinated group howling. Treating those as the same milestone creates false precision.
Recorded ages for early and group howls
Mech recorded an Arctic wolf pup producing a howl at 26 days. That is evidence that a recognizable howl can occur during the same broad transition in which pups are learning to stand and walk. The same study recorded pups initiating a group howl at 52 days. Group initiation requires a different level of coordination and social participation, so it is expected to occur later than an isolated first attempt.

Incomplete observation also means the actual onset could have happened earlier than the first time it was documented.

How den emergence fits the timeline
Smithsonian describes wolf pups emerging from the den at about three weeks. This is related to, but distinct from, walking. A pup can begin standing or taking steps inside the den before it is regularly visible outside. The International Wolf Center describes pups appearing and playing near the den during the socialization period, when movement and interaction are expanding.
Den emergence depends on opportunity as well as physical ability. A pup may be capable of walking but remain sheltered, while another may appear briefly and then return underground. Therefore, seeing a pup outside the den is not a more precise substitute for estimating when its eyes opened or when its first steps occurred.

Species, population and setting
The general timelines from the International Wolf Center, Yellowstone National Park and Smithsonian are intended as accessible descriptions of wolf development. Mech’s detailed observations concern Arctic wolves in a particular field environment. Differences among populations, den conditions and observation opportunities can affect what an observer sees and when it is recorded.

Observation is not the same as onset
A researcher can only record a behavior while watching. If a pup is hidden, asleep or out of view, an earlier attempt may go uncounted. Mech explicitly cautioned that incomplete observations can make a behavior appear to begin later than it actually did. This is why “first recorded at 26 days” is more accurate than “wolves begin howling at 26 days.”

Milestones overlap
Development is continuous rather than a set of switches. Eye opening, improving vision, standing, walking, leaving the den and experimenting with vocalizations overlap across the second, third and later weeks. Two pups in the same litter can show different levels of coordination on the same day, and one pup may be advanced in one behavior while still tentative in another.
How to interpret a pup’s age from behavior
- Closed eyes: Consistent with the newborn period, but an observer should not infer an exact day from eyelids alone.
- Partly or fully open eyes: Usually indicates the end of the second week or later; it does not prove that the pup has clear, mature sight.
- Brief upright posture: Fits the early standing transition and may precede purposeful walking.
- Wobbly steps: Consistent with the two-to-three-week locomotor transition; this is not adult-like mobility.
- High-pitched howl-like sound: May represent an individual experiment among squeaks and whimpers, not a coordinated pack call.
- Several pups vocalizing together: Could indicate social howling, but a single observation cannot establish the age at which group behavior began.
- Outside the den: Supports an age of roughly three weeks or more in the Smithsonian timeline, while recognizing that emergence is separate from the first ability to walk.
Using several signs together is more informative than relying on one. Even then, a behavior-based estimate should be expressed as an approximate age range unless the pup’s birth date is known.
What these milestones reveal about wolf development
The sequence shows why wolf pups remain dependent while their basic abilities are appearing. Opening the eyes provides access to the visual world, but useful sight takes longer to develop. Standing and walking begin before movement is stable. Vocal experimentation starts before coordinated group howling. Den emergence expands the pup’s surroundings after those abilities are already underway.

In other words, each milestone has an early version and a more capable version. A pup may open its eyes without seeing clearly, walk without traveling efficiently and howl without taking part in a sustained chorus. A careful account preserves those distinctions instead of assigning one exact date to a broad developmental process.
The practical answer in one sequence
- Birth: Wolf pups are blind and deaf, with a reported birth weight of about 450 grams in the Smithsonian account.
- End of the second week: The eyelids generally open, usually in the 11–15-day range, although sight is still developing.
- Second to third week: Pups begin standing and taking awkward steps; field observations include walking at 20 days.
- Around three weeks: Pups may begin emerging from the den, a separate milestone from first walking.
- Later in the transition: High-pitched howl attempts appear. An Arctic field study recorded an individual howl at 26 days and group-howling initiation at 52 days.
Those ages are best used as signposts. They describe when the changes commonly appear or were documented, while leaving room for individual variation and for behaviors that observers did not happen to witness.
