When Should I Spay or Neuter My Dog or Cat? Age and Timing Guide

Cats not intended for breeding are generally advised to be spayed or neutered by five months. Dogs have no single age: small dogs and large dogs follow different windows, and breed, health, and household factors shape the final date.

For a cat not intended for breeding, the professional target is spaying or neutering by five months of age. Dogs have no single age. The starting point is projected adult weight and sex: dogs expected to weigh under 45 pounds are usually altered around five to six months, while larger dogs are generally advised to wait longer. Your veterinarian should set the exact timing for your animal, taking into account breed, health, lifestyle, and whether you can prevent mating in the meantime.

Cats: plan the surgery for five months

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) both support spaying or neutering cats that are not intended for breeding by five months of age. AAHA notes that a female kitten can enter her first heat as early as four months, although five or six months is more typical. The practical goal is to book the visit so that surgery happens before puberty, not as an afterthought at a later routine appointment.

Cornell Feline Health Center describes five to seven months as common practice in many clinics. It also notes that little scientific evidence establishes that range as the best age. Treat these as two different statements: five months is the professional recommendation, while five to seven months describes what many clinics actually schedule. A cat with a specific medical condition may need a different plan, so ask your veterinarian before the date is set.

Dogs: start with projected adult size and sex

AAHA’s canine life-stage guidance, including its 2019 guideline, divides dogs at 45 pounds projected adult weight. The recommended windows are below. These are general patterns, not individual deadlines.

Dog group Males Females Key caveat
Small dogs (under 45 lb projected adult weight) Neuter at about six months Spay before the anticipated first heat, typically five to six months First heat varies by breed, so “typically” is not a rule for every dog
Large dogs (45 lb or more projected adult weight) Generally wait until growth stops, often about nine to 15 months Five- to 15-month window, decided with clinical discretion to balance health and pregnancy risks Some large and giant breeds mature later, so a single deadline does not fit every dog

Small dogs

For small breeds, the AAHA pattern is to neuter males around six months and to spay females before their expected first heat. Because breed changes when a female comes into heat, a small-dog schedule should be confirmed against your dog’s breed and development rather than applied by calendar alone.

Large and giant dogs

For dogs projected to weigh 45 pounds or more, AAHA generally recommends waiting until growth has stopped before neutering males. For females, the guidance allows a wider window and places the decision with the veterinarian. Do not apply the small-dog schedule to a large-breed puppy without a direct discussion with your vet about growth, breed, and expected adult size.

Why first heat is a moving target

AAHA’s 2019 guideline reports that first estrus ranges from about four months in some small breeds to about 24 months in some large breeds. That range is the main reason a single age cannot work for every dog. It is also why a veterinarian may ask about breed, parentage, and the dog’s growth before recommending a date.

Why dogs need an individualized decision

The AVMA’s client brochure puts the principle plainly: “The optimal timing of spaying or neutering is as individual as your pet.” Timing involves competing risks. Most of the evidence comes from studies that compare groups of dogs, and those studies show associations rather than proof. AAHA’s canine guideline states, “Association does not confirm cause and effect.” Results from one breed or study population should not be applied to every dog.

  • FESTIVAL DECORATION This cat cone can be used as a soft pillow or Christmas or Halloween decoration. The neck rope has been designed with an open knot, and if the rope is too long or there is a risk of the pet breaking free, it can be knotted

Mammary tumors and early spaying

Spaying females earlier is associated with a lower risk of mammary neoplasia (mammary tumors), and it also prevents litters. AAHA cites studies reporting about an 8% incidence of mammary neoplasia after one estrus cycle and about 26% after a second. These figures come from specific cited studies with their own populations and conditions. They are not a personal risk estimate for your dog, and they should not be compared directly with other figures.

Orthopedic, cancer, and urinary concerns

Later timing may reduce certain orthopedic risks and, in some dogs, urinary incontinence or certain cancer risks. These are population-level associations, and how they apply depends on breed. AAHA also uses the overall osteosarcoma incidence, reported as 0.2% in its 2019 guideline, as an example of why a veterinarian should consider the baseline incidence of a condition before weighing a timing decision. That baseline is a population figure, not a prediction for an individual dog.

The risk of waiting

Waiting is not risk-free. An unwanted pregnancy can occur if a dog is not reliably kept from mating during the waiting period, and that possibility should be part of the decision. Timing also shifts the balance among the disease risks above, so no choice removes every concern.

Shelter, rescue, and very young animals

Shelter and population-control programs may sterilize puppies and kittens earlier than is usual for a privately owned pet. AAHA supports sterilization as young as eight weeks in that setting, provided the individual animal is assessed and the likely outcomes are discussed. The population-control context does not translate directly to a pet at home, so a privately owned animal should follow its own veterinarian’s schedule.

Questions to settle with your veterinarian

  • What is your dog’s projected adult weight, and which timing group does that place it in?
  • What breed-specific maturity or disease predispositions should affect the date?
  • Does your pet have any health condition that changes the plan?
  • For a female, what are the expected trade-offs between earlier and later surgery for her breed?
  • Can your household reliably keep the animal from mating until the procedure?
  • What is the clinic’s protocol for anesthesia, pre-surgery instructions, and medication? (The operating clinic’s directions control all of these.)

Recovery and the cone

An Elizabethan collar, often called a cone, is commonly recommended to stop a pet from licking or chewing the incision. ASPCA and VCA aftercare materials both describe this use. VCA also notes that recovery suits can be an alternative in some cases. Your clinic may provide the collar and should direct the fit and how long it stays on. Do not put any product on the incision unless your veterinarian has directed it.

Use the individual answer, not a calendar rule. For a cat, aim for five months unless your veterinarian advises otherwise. For a dog, start with projected adult weight and sex, then let your veterinarian adjust the date for breed, health, and household circumstances.
