Arrange a veterinary exam for your rescued puppy as soon as possible after bringing it home, even if it seems healthy. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) does not set a universal deadline in hours or days; call a clinic to arrange a visit and ask how soon your puppy should be seen. If your puppy is seriously ill, contact a veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

How soon should a rescued puppy have its first checkup?

Book an examination as soon as possible after adoption or rescue. The AVMA recommends prompt assessment of a newly acquired dog so a veterinarian can check its health and recommend appropriate vaccinations and care. Bring any records you have, especially vaccination and deworming history. AVMA: Selecting a Dog

A puppy that looks well still benefits from an exam: its age, prior care, and exposure history may be uncertain. The vet can assess the puppy and make an individualized plan for preventive care. There is no single rescue-specific visit deadline or catch-up schedule established by the cited guidance, so the timing and plan should reflect the puppy’s condition and history.

What to expect at the first veterinary visit

Most puppies generally have a health exam and begin vaccinations and parasite preventives at six to eight weeks of age, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. That is general puppy guidance, not a required waiting period for a rescued puppy. If the puppy’s age or records are unknown, the veterinarian can advise what is appropriate. VCA describes a typical puppy vaccination series as beginning at six to eight weeks and continuing until at or after 16 weeks; individual recommendations and timing vary. One appointment does not necessarily complete the series. Ask which vaccines and parasite preventives are due, when boosters are needed, and how to reduce disease exposure while protection is incomplete. When symptoms mean you should contact a vet right away

Do not wait for a routine appointment if a puppy is lethargic, refusing food, vomiting, or passing blood in its stool. VCA advises veterinary care right away for these signs in a puppy with diarrhea. VCA: What To Do If Your Puppy Has Diarrhea

How to prepare for the appointment

  1. Ask the rescue for available history. Request the puppy’s estimated age, exam notes, vaccination dates, deworming and parasite-prevention history, medications, and any known illness or exposure.
  2. Bring the records you can obtain. Vaccine and deworming information helps the veterinarian decide what care is due. Do not postpone urgent treatment while trying to collect records.
  3. Ask for a practical care plan. Discuss vaccines and booster timing, parasite prevention, nutrition, symptoms that should prompt urgent care, and precautions while vaccine protection is incomplete.
  4. Ask whether a stool sample is useful. Bring a fresh sample if the veterinary team recommends it, particularly if the puppy has diarrhea.

Age, symptoms, prior treatment, local disease risks, and clinic availability all affect the plan. A veterinarian who can examine the puppy is the right person to tailor it.
