Keep your dog off stairs when a veterinarian has restricted activity after surgery or injury, or when pain, weakness, slipping, or impaired mobility makes stair use unsafe. If stair difficulty is new or getting worse, contact your veterinarian; it is a symptom to assess, not a diagnosis. The right plan depends on your dog’s condition and the treating team’s instructions.
When to keep your dog off stairs
During recovery from surgery or injury
Follow the discharge instructions from the veterinarian or surgical team. Some recovery plans prohibit stairs or limit a dog to one floor, and the restrictions depend on the procedure, injury, and individual circumstances. Texas A&M’s orthopedic FAQ, for example, advises against long flights of stairs in the recovery protocol it describes. Do not let a dog’s willingness to climb override a prescribed restriction.
VCA’s exercise-restriction guidance explains that limits vary and may include avoiding stairs. If your instructions do not clearly say whether your dog may use stairs, ask the treating team before allowing access.
When stairs are painful or unsafe
Keep your dog from using stairs unsupervised if they are limping, struggling to climb or descend, slipping, weak, or having trouble rising or jumping. Preventing access can reduce the immediate risk of a fall, but it does not identify the cause. Arrange veterinary advice, especially if the difficulty is new or worsening.

What a new stair problem can tell your veterinarian
Stair difficulty is useful information during an evaluation of a limping dog, but by itself it does not show what is wrong. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends noting changes such as difficulty with stairs, jumping, rising, or exercise. Its guide emphasizes that a thorough veterinary examination is needed to locate the source of pain and determine appropriate next steps: What to expect when taking your limping dog to the veterinarian.
Before you call or visit, note when the change began, whether it is improving or worsening, whether your dog struggles going up, down, or both, and which stairway is involved. Also mention recent trauma, surgery, medication, or changes in activity or routine.

How to make the home safer
Choose an accommodation for the specific problem—blocking access, improving traction, or assisting movement—and confirm with your veterinarian or rehabilitation therapist that it fits the care plan.
- Block access: Use a gate or barrier when stairs are off-limits or your dog cannot manage them safely. A gate can help enforce a recovery restriction or prevent unsupervised use.
- Improve traction: Non-slip surfaces, runners, or grip tape can reduce slipping when stair use is permitted. The VCA guide to a comfortable home for a mobility-compromised dog discusses traction and other adaptations. The AAHA 2023 Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats also list options such as yoga mats and carpet runners.
- Use a ramp for suitable access: A ramp may help with optional access to furniture or a vehicle, but it is not permission to use stairs during a recovery restriction. The American Kennel Club’s guide to dog stairs and ramps recommends stable placement and gradual, positive introduction.
- Ask about a harness or sling: A supportive aid may help when stairs cannot be avoided, but ask the care team how to handle and support your dog safely.
There is no universal product ranking. Suitability depends on your dog’s size and ability, the stairway and available space, whether a person can assist safely, and any veterinary restrictions.

Do senior dogs or puppies need to avoid stairs?
Age alone does not establish that a dog must stop using every stair. For a senior dog, a new or worsening struggle deserves veterinary assessment rather than an assumption that it is simply age or arthritis. Adjustments such as barriers or improved traction may be appropriate, depending on the dog and the home.
Puppy advice is also not a universal age-based ban. The AKC recommends helping small or ungainly puppies and introducing equipment gradually and positively. Ask your veterinarian about your puppy’s size, coordination, and circumstances rather than relying on a single age cutoff.
