Arrange a veterinary appointment if your dog has a new or worsening change in activity, walking, rising, play, or everyday behavior. Don’t assume it is simply old age: arthritis is one possibility, but other illnesses can also make a dog less active. Seek emergency care for sudden weakness or paralysis, loss of coordination, inability to stand or walk without help, altered awareness, an obvious fracture, or major trauma.

Choose the right level of care

What you notice What to do
New or worsening stiffness, limping, trouble getting up or lying down, a slower pace on walks, less play, reluctance to jump or use stairs, or a change in posture Book a veterinary appointment. These can be signs of pain or a mobility problem that needs assessment. AAHA advises veterinary care for movement changes; VCA lists these as possible osteoarthritis signs.
Acute pain or limping that does not resolve in less than an hour Contact or visit an urgent-care veterinarian, following local clinic guidance. This is the threshold in VCA’s urgent-care guidance, not a universal clinic policy.
Sudden weakness or paralysis, loss of coordination or mobility, inability to stand or walk without assistance, unresponsiveness or altered awareness, an obvious fracture, or major trauma Seek emergency veterinary care. Call the emergency clinic while arranging transport if you can do so safely. AAHA identifies these as emergency signs; VCA also distinguishes emergency signs from urgent limping.

If you are unsure which service is appropriate, call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic and describe what changed. Clinics may differ in how they handle urgent visits.

What a change in activity can mean

Arthritis or another source of pain

Osteoarthritis can cause stiffness, limping, difficulty rising or lying down, slower walks, and reluctance to play, jump, or use stairs. Restlessness, posture changes, and altered behavior can also be signs of discomfort. These changes may be subtle, so report them even if your dog still gets around. VCA describes common mobility and behavior signs, and AAHA recommends veterinary attention for suspected arthritis.

Other health problems

Reduced activity is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In senior pets, progressive lethargy may occur alongside changes in appetite or thirst, weight loss, behavior changes, mobility changes, or wounds that do not heal. Those broader changes are worth discussing with a veterinarian rather than treating reduced activity as an isolated sign. AAHA lists these among signs that may accompany chronic disease in senior pets.

What to note before the appointment

Write down when you first noticed the change and whether it is getting worse. Note what happens during walks, when your dog rises or lies down, and during play or stair use. Also track eating, drinking, elimination, attitude, and any changes in grooming, vision, or hearing. These details can help the veterinary team understand the pattern. AAHA’s senior-care guidance describes these areas as useful parts of a pet’s history.

If possible, take a short video of your dog walking or getting up at home. Movement may look different in a clinic, and AAHA says client videos can help assess pain and mobility. Don’t delay urgent or emergency care to record one.

Senior dogs still need routine checkups

For a senior dog, AAHA recommends a physical examination at least twice a year, with routine bloodwork and additional screening as needed. Regular visits can help your veterinarian assess changes over time; they do not replace an appointment for a new or worsening problem. AAHA’s senior-dog guidance outlines this schedule.

Make movement easier while arranging care

For a dog with mobility trouble, ramps, non-slip rugs, and orthopedic beds are among the home adaptations AAHA lists for senior pets. They may make access or resting more comfortable, but they cannot identify why your dog is slowing down. AAHA discusses these adaptations for reduced mobility.
